Outdoors with Don Q: Make plans this fall to visit Apple Hill

A party of eight friends just returned from a fun-filled day at Apple Hill, California. Those ladies were: Mary Bottoms, Laurie Harig, Patti Isaman, Mary Morris, Elaine Quilici and Kathi Quilici, all of Carson City, plus Emily Bradburn and Carolyn Harton of Dayton. For three of them, it was their first tour-bus visit to Apple Hill.
And if you are a newcomer to our area or if you have never been there, fall is a great time of the year to visit Apple Hill like they did.

If you are a newcomer, about now you are probably wondering, “What and where in the heck is Apple Hill?”

Cyber Awareness: Feds urge citizens to secure computers to protect personal information

Since October 2004 National Cyber Security Awareness Month, administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, reminds citizens of the importance of protecting not only individual identities, finances and privacy but also our country’s national security, critical infrastructure and economy. Cyber security is a responsibility shared by all — the public sector, the private sector, and the general public.

I love Carson City's Weekend Event Summary: Oct 3-6

Good Morning, Carson City! Many people in our area have facebook accounts, but not everyone, so I am pleased to bring you the event list that is featured on my facebook page, I love Carson City.

Every week (for the last two years) I have scoured the internet, followed the pages of local businesses and organizations, searched website calendars, and compiled a list of anything and everything going on in this community.

A Letter to Derek Jeter

Dear Mr. Jeter,

Where do I start? First of all, that was a great run huh? Twenty years is an amazing accomplishment and to do it the way you did was something that I will probably never see again. I never thought as a little kid in 1996 when you took over the starting position at shortstop for the New York Yankees that I would be looking up to you and calling you one of my idols.

Outdoors with Don Q: Exploring Alaska on the web

I have a "ton of fun" visiting all kinds of websites on the Internet, and enjoying all of their fascinating information and photos. They range all the way from our very own Carson Now Carson City to www.carsonvalleytimes.com in Douglas County to those in the far-flung corners of the world.

Of all of those far-flung websites, I mostly enjoy visiting those that are associated with the Far North: Alaska, Alberta, British Columbia, The Northwest Territories and The Yukon.

The University of Nevada, Reno’s newest mountaintop camera at Lake Tahoe has just been installed, and has been tracking the smoke from the King Fire in El Dorado County, Calif., which has been inundating the Lake Tahoe Basin, Carson City and Reno areas with smoke in the afternoons.

Outdoors with Don Q: The fall season is a special time of the year

Candy Dance in Genoa.

Closing of the 2014 fishing seasons at Fort Churchill Cooling Ponds, Hinkson Slough, Hobart Reservoir, Mason Valley Wildlife Management Area, North Pond and Topaz Lake in Nevada.

Outdoors with Don Q: Virginia Lakes is a fun-filled destination high in the mountains

Elaine and I recently returned from a fun-filled, three-day, fishing and hiking destination in the mountains; and if you like hiking, trout fishing, together with good food and comfortable accommodations, you might be interested in knowing about the Virginia Lakes area in California.

How to get there:
It's easy, just take U.S. 395 south from Carson City, through Minden, Gardnerville, Topaz, Coleville, Walker and Bridgeport to the very top of Conway Summit. At the summit, take the paved road on the right for six miles to the end of the pavement at Little Virginia Lake.

New high definition fire cameras are scanning the mountains and shoreline, while University of Nevada, Reno researchers are discovering new animal species at the bottom of Lake Tahoe and working with colleagues at the Desert Research Institute to document the dramatic decline of other bottom dwelling species and nearshore water quality.

Be on the lookout for lottery scams

Scammers are at it again; most recently I received a letter from a citizen who was informed that they had won the “Inter-American Lotto Powerball” held in Hawaii. Having never been to Hawaii, the individual was pretty certain they did not win.

A check had been included with the letter which the recipient was asked to deposit and return a portion of the funds received. This was to pay for non- resident fees and administrative costs. A little research on the internet and it was obvious that the letter was a scam.

Outdoors with Don Q: Take a vacation at Great Basin National Park

Here is an annual suggestion, if you would like to take a mid-summer vacation at an out-of-the-way location.
Do you know that our very own White Pine County is home to one of the Nation's least visited and Nevada's only National Park?

It's the 77,000 acre Great Basin National Park.
If you've never been there, here is a whole bunch of useful information:

Outdoors with Don Q: A short vacation at high altitude

Elaine and I just returned from a three-day, two-night, mini vacation at Parchers Resort in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, west of Bishop, Calif.

The purpose of our visit was to enjoy the cozy cabin accommodations at Parchers, plus the late spring weather, spectacular scenery and the peace and quiet in that general area. Here's some miscellaneous info on our trip:

Carson City locals create YouTube video that reaches over 200,000 viewers

Most people may consider internet videos to be a quick way to get an easy laugh, but what some may not be aware of is that there's an entire niche of them that are specifically made to amaze and awe the viewer, sadly most of those videos will remain in the low numbers of reproductions regardless of the hard work that's been put onto them, but if after investing days of recording and editing it gets 200,000 people engaged in the plot and entertained by its content, it can certainly be said that an impression not all can achieve, has been made.

Outdoors with Don Q: Special reminder for California fishing licenses

Now that the California 2014 fishing season is open, this is a special reminder that if you are planning to fish in the Golden State, be aware that you will need the current license.

You can purchase that license and any applicable stamps at a number of local outlets or on the Internet and, of course, go here for the latest updates on fishing in California and Nevada. If you need to buy a license and stamps, here is some info:
