Soroptimist International of Carson City has partnered with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada, to ensure every child in foster care receives an Easter basket this year.

CARSON CITY — A total of 93 Career and Technical Education (CTE) and HOSA (Future Health Professionals) students competed in the Nevada State Leadership Conference held at the Rio in Las Vegas March 18-20.

There were a total of 74 students from Carson High School (CHS), 6 from Pioneer High School (PHS) and 13 from Carson Middle School (CMS). More than 1,000 students from across the state of Nevada competed in more than 40 medical competition events.

Nevada Film Office officials are heading to Los Angeles next week to pitch Nevada’s many iconic locations to executive-level film and television decision makers from Netflix, YouTube, Warner Brothers, Marvel Studios and others during AFCI Week.

CHS celebrated its Second Annual Carson Unplugged event this past week where staff and students were encouraged to unplug from technology and be present in the moment, enjoying more face-to-face interactions and less screen time.

My son and I just had the most amazing day! A friendly serviceman from The Happy Outlet just gave my son and I these delicious sugar cookies. When we asked why, they said just to see us smile, no strings attached. Well we certainly did! The serviceman told us that March 20th was International Happiness Day. When we got home I looked it up and sure enough, this is actually a UN-sanctioned day. I think this is awesome that a local company is taking the time to do something wonderful for our community. With so much hate and division, everyone needs this now more than ever!

The 28th annual Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry and St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Virginia City rocked, rolled and bounced Saturday among the thousands of partygoers who arrived in the famed Comstock town to celebrate a cuisine tradition of the Old West and swill some good ole' fashion Irish cheer.

Daylight Savings Time is about to begin, harkening the approach of Spring. Winter, though, continues its stubborn hold on the region, so bundle up this weekend in spite the extra hour of daylight. There's a chance of snow showers throughout the weekend with daytime highs only into the low 40s.

And remember to set your clocks ahead one hour Saturday night!

Heading into the home stretch that is Friday, March 8, 2019 we welcome you to the end of the work week. More spring-like weather is ahead, which isn't exactly all sunshine and flowers. CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Education has started a program that will allow adult learners to complete their high school equivalency and concurrently enroll in college courses.

Pocket translators and Bibles are not the items most teenagers would dream about packing for a Spring Break trip. However, for 12 Carson City area high school students, these items, joined by hearts to serve, will be the most precious commodities needed for an adventure of a lifetime.

Not only is Friday the first day of March in this 2019 calendar year but it is also the end of the work week. And for this we say welcome to a month that brings us the Downtown Carson City Wine Walk, which is this Saturday, NCAA basketball playoffs, St. Patrick's Day celebrations and the first day of spring. The Reno-Tahoe International Airport unveiled its “Carson City Arts: Taking Flight” exhibit Tuesday evening at the airport’s gallery which features local artists who shine a spotlight on the capital city.

This is the fourth in a series of columns summarizing my Controller’s Annual Report for fiscal year 2018 (FY18).

The first two columns showed that since FY06 state spending has grown faster than Nevada’s economy, thus imposing an ever-larger real burden on Nevada families and businesses, whose real incomes are lower now than in FY06. The third one noted Health and Social Services spending, the largest budget item, has grown most rapidly by far, driven greatly by federal health care mandates and funding.

CARSON CITY — Putting an exclamation point on the best season yet, the Carson High School robotics team, Cyber Mafia, was crowned state champions at the Nevada State FIRST Tech Challenge Championship held in Las Vegas Saturday, Feb. 9.

For professionals in the green industry, especially certified arborists, the ability to identify the types of trees in their clients’ yards is an important skill to have. To help arborists, landscapers and others hone their tree identification skills, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension presents three seasonal Tree Identification Presentations and Walks.

Carson Assembly No. 7 Rainbow Girls will host Painting with a Pal on Saturday, March 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Carson Lodge No. 1 of the Free and Accepted Masons, 113 E. Washington Street (at the corner of Carson Street) in Carson City.

The community is invited. Suggested age 5 and up. All proceeds will help support the girls with their community service and assembly events.

Cost is $20 per person. All art supplies and lunch are included. There will be two sessions: one at 10 a.m. and a second at 1 p.m.

This Saturday is all about film appreciation around the area. The Carson City International Film Festival wraps up today inside the newly renovated Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center, while the Tahoe Adventure Film Festival occurs at CVIC Hall in Minden.

The Carson City Arts: Taking Flight Inaugural Art Exhibition at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport will host an opening reception on Tuesday, Feb. 26 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the new art installation in the airport, featuring artists from Carson City.

Those who attend the sixth annual International Film Weekend in Carson City will get a glimpse into some of Nevada’s hidden treasures, as well as a look at cultures around the world.

“We hope people will see how we are all the same, underneath,” said chairwoman Linda Bellegray. “Our humanity is universal.”

Recently, SkillsUSA had its Regional Photography Competition, and all five participating CHS students are going to State. SkillsUSA is a career and technical student organization serving more than 395,000 high school, college, and middle school students across the nation in trade training programs and technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations.

Carson City Soroptimist will feature Lori Nichols as speaker during its Program Meeting on Wednesday, February 27, 12-1 p.m. at Glen Eagles Restaurant. This meeting is open to the public, with prior reservations required. There is no charge to attend, however, a plated lunch with choice of entrees, selected in advance, is available for $16.

For those weary from all the snow around Carson City so far this month, about the only good news to share is that your weekend is here and there's plenty to do indoors if winter recreation isn't your thing.
