Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada is pleased to announce this year’s Triumphant: Celebrating Women in Leadership Dinner honorees. A Nevada Department of Education grant of $75,000 has been secured to develop a new division — Career Bound NV — that focuses on workforce development by providing work-based learning experiences to K-12 students in Carson City, Storey and Churchill counties.

Retailers in Nevada and nationwide have ramped up hiring campaigns in preparation for the 2019 holiday shopping season. In the Silver State, the Retail Association of Nevada estimates retailers will boost hiring by 7,100 new positions during the October-to-December holiday shopping period.

Nevada State Librarian Tod Colegrove will take over as director of the Carson City Library next week. “The Carson City Library is leading the nation in many ways,” he said. “I’m not prone to hyperbole, but that is the reality of the situation.”

The Nevada Housing Division will celebrate the fifth year of its rental housing locator at a relaunch party to introduce a new look and easier navigation of the NVHousingSearch.org website. Nevada-based contracting firm CORE Construction is expanding its influence in the Reno community with updates to key staff and impactful projects.

The firm announced the promotion of Travis Coombs to Vice President of their Northern Nevada operations. Since entering the construction industry in 2001, he has established trusting relationships with design partners, building partners and clients. Coombs joined CORE in 2013 and has served in several departments. In his new role, he will now lead business strategy and development Northern Nevada.

National Aviation Day was celebrated Monday, August 19. President Franklin D Roosevelt established this United States national observation in 1939. The date is the anniversary of Orville Wright’s birthday. Since 1903 when Orville and Wilbur Wright first achieved piloted, controlled, sustained, heavier-than-air flight the world has changes significantly. While Carson City employment figures show a decrease of roughly 100 jobs in July, the capital city is up more than 1,000 jobs over the year, according to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s monthly economic report released Tuesday.
