Heading into Monday, the first day of July 2019 we leave an action-packed weekend behind us with a long Independence Day holiday week ahead. The activities continue, albeit at a slower place for the first day of the work week. There's art showings and activities for adults and kids, a My Place Hotels job fair, a talk featuring the program director at Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, a swing dance class and more. Old Fashioned Fourth of July to be held at Fort Churchill

Silver Springs, Nev. – Celebrate Independence Day the old fashioned way with traditional games, homemade toys and crafts, and sweet treats from the 1800s. Activities for all ages will include: sack races, three-legged races, quoits (ring toss), bean bag toss, baseball, watermelon seed spitting contest, and hand-cranked ice cream. Bring a blanket and a picnic lunch and plan to spend the afternoon enjoying the park.

No injuries after fireworks barge erupts in fire at Lake Tahoe

Two hours after the Lights on the Lake fireworks show at Lake Tahoe ended late Wednesday, one of three barges used to launch fireworks in the show caught on fire. No injuries were reported.

Carson Valley doesn’t have a fireworks celebration, but they get the day off to a great start with a fun run, bbqs, concerts, and more. Be prepared for traffic if you want to watch at the lake, and a designated driver is suggested no matter where you end up. Have a safe holiday and enjoy.

John Calvin Coolidge Jr. - The Early Years

John Calvin Coolidge Jr., our 30th President, 1923-1929, was perhaps America’s most under-rated chief executive. He was a man of few words, decisive action and a dry sense of humor.

“Silent Cal” was born on the Fourth of July in 1872 in Vermont, the son of a prominent local farmer, general store owner, postmaster and politician. He was the only president born on Independence Day, although three former presidents died on the Fourth.

Music and History: Carson City chimes at Laxalt Building resume singing on the hour

Carson City locals that frequent the downtown area may have noticed some silence on the hour instead of the bell chimes familiar ring at the Laxalt Building this past summer. The original Carillon — an electronic device that simulates tuned bell chimes — broke down after ringing on the hour since 1999.

Life of Julia Bulette featured at Leisure Hour Club dinner meeting

Members of the Carson City Leisure Hour Club will learn of the loves and losses of Julia Bulette, renowned resident of Virginia City, at their dinner meeting on Wednesday, October 18.

Bulette’s murder began a manhunt that last over a year and resulted in the arrest, trial, and the April 24, 1869 execution of John Millian.

In what was the largest gathering of people in Nevada up to that time, 3,000 to 4,000 people were present at the hanging.

The Annual Chili Cook-off returns to Glen Eagles this weekend; with live music, a craft fair, and lots of yummy stuff to eat, raising money for Honor Flight has never tasted so good. Happy Wednesday, Carson City. The long holiday weekend is over, but you can keep the good times rolling. The Fox Brewpub is hosting their monthly Whiskey Wednesday tonight, complete with raffle prizes and of course, whiskey. The Classic Cinema Club pushed back their monthly movie viewing by a day, so head over to the BAC Performance Hall to watch ‘Three Came Home.’ Keep Tahoe Blue will be starting the day at numerous beaches; their annual clean-up is necessary after the fireworks.

Carson City area weather: Chance of thunderstorms Wednesday prompt Red Flag warning

With clear skies on tap for Carson City and western Nevada Tuesday evening, forecasters have turned their attention to Wednesday and an upper level disturbance that could produce isolated thunderstorms in the region, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag fire weather warning for much of the area.
