The holiday season is meant to be filled with joy, but for many families the Christmas spirit also brings added stress and anxiety. Statistics show over 30 percent of working families are making $60,000 annually or less for a family of four to live on in Nevada.

In recognition of the start of the holiday season, Greater Nevada Credit Union (GNCU) branches across northern Nevada are collecting donations for those in need on behalf of local nonprofits and the KTVN 2 News Share Your Christmas Drive-By Food Drive.

GNCU asks northern Nevadans to contribute nonperishable foods, new children’s toys, new clothes and hygiene items for this year’s Greater Giving campaign by donating at any GNCU branch beginning Tuesday, Nov. 1 through Monday, Dec. 5.

A collaboration of agencies and organizations officially kicked off the 2016 Holiday with a Hero campaign on Wednesday with a goal of giving at least 200 homeless children in Carson City a Christmas experience by providing them gift cards to spend on themselves prior to the holiday.

One of the favorite Itemized Deductions to claim on form 1040, Schedule A is the gifts to church and charity. Here are some of the IRS rules on the law provisions and general substantiation requirements to keep in mind.

Clothing and household items donated to charity must be in good used condition or better. Donors must get a written acknowledgment from the charity for all gifts worth $250 or more, including a description of the items donated. In practice we find the receipt from the charity do not usually list the items in detail and certainly do not give values of each item.

Body by Pilates is once again rising to the needs of the community by again by sponsoring the “Adopt a Family” program for the upcoming holidays.

Thomas, Monday's winner of the $500 Visa Gift Card from Carson City Toyota Scion's Toys for Tots promotion went a step further in his holiday giving spirit.

Thomas took the $500 Visa Gift Card to Walmart and paid off lay-away toys set aside among people in the Carson City community that he didn't even know. Now that's the Christmas spirit!

Given the hostility temperature lately, it's refreshing to see young adults with cool heads mobilize for the good of the cause. The Associated Students of Western Nevada has initiated a holiday giving project to help fellow students struggling financially during the holidays.
The Giving Tree will be set up in the Bristlecone Building at WNC Carson City and Virgil Getto Hall at WNC Fallon Campus containing cards with information for a WNC student who could use a little help this holiday season, according to a news release.

Dear Editor: Once again the Dayton community has come together and made a difference for so many families during the holidays.

The Dayton toy drive received applications for over 650 kids this year and we were quite concerned that there would not be enough to go around. Fortunately a large, eager, group of volunteers came together who were quick to get down to business and get the donations and interest pouring in. It wasn’t long before businesses, as well as community organizations and individuals were giving.
