The Pony Express made its way into Carson City on Wednesday afternoon, heading into town with a breeze and about 40 minutes behind schedule. The mochila exchange was made at Second and Curry streets. It had arrived in the capital city after a stop at Fort Churchill State Park in Silver Springs.

The Pony Express then went through Jacks Valley on its way to Genoa before heading over Kingsbury Grade and onward to Lake Tahoe.

The famed horseback ride across the West that briefly delivered pre-Civil war mail and covered terrain that spanned nearly 2,000 miles will arrive in Western Nevada and Lake Tahoe with stops Wednesday in Silver Springs, Carson City, Genoa and Stateline.

CARSON CITY — With the passage of the National Trails System Act on June 2, 1968, America received an incredible gift: The creation and protection of extraordinary trails to discover, explore, and connect with nature. With approximately 2,485 miles of national trails throughout the Silver State, the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is excited to “wear our hearts on our backpacks” as we join the country in celebrating five decades of the National Trails System.

The annual National Pony Express re-ride strolled through 2nd and Curry street in Carson City earlier than expected Wednesday morning. But those who arrived early to watch came prepared with cameras and bright smiles as two riders exchanged horses and pleasantries in middle of the road.

A lone rider on a stout draft horse trotted down Curry Street to the claps and cheers of a welcoming committee a little after 2:15 Thursday afternoon.

Witness living history in motion Thursday afternoon as the Pony Express gallops into the state capital for the commemorative hand-off of the mail-bearing Mochila.

The National Pony Express Association will be conducting its Annual Re-Ride of the Pony Express Trail from Sacramento, California, to St. Joseph, Missouri, June 15 - 25, 2016. It is expected to pass through Carson City at approximately 2 p.m. Thursday, June 16.

This Re-Ride is a 10-day, 24-hour a day, non-stop event by over 600 riders and horses over the 1,966 mile route of the Pony Express National Historic Trail from California through Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas to Missouri. It is the longest event held annually on a historical trail in the nation.

UPDATE: The Pony Express arrived in Carson City this afternoon, with travels along South Curry Street and the capitol building area before heading off to Dayton and then Fort Churchill.

Many events are scheduled throughout the Silver State in the month of June. These Nevada 150 events help celebrate all things Nevada and bring awareness to the state’s 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following are events held June 3 through June 15.

The Pony Express will celebrate its 150th anniversary this year with a ride through Carson City on Wednesday, June 9, arriving at around 8:30 a.m. with a stop at Third and Curry streets. All are welcome to see the exchange of the mochila, with a special presentation event planned at the stop.
