Carson High School Students Receive New Laptops

Submitted by editor on Sun, 10/04/2015 - 5:28amAll 2,300 Carson High School students will each receive a laptop during the week of Oct. 5-9 to be used at school and at home to enhance their learning opportunities. Beginning Monday at 7:45 a.m. and going throughout the day, all students will go to the library to receive their laptop. This process will be repeated again Tuesday through Thursday.

“We’re showcasing that Carson City is a dog-friendly community,” said Lisa Schuette, president of the Carson Animal Services Initiative, which is raising money for a new and improved animal shelter.
Coinciding with Bonanza Kennel Club’s annual AKC Dog Show at Fuji Park on today and Sunday, CASI is organizing a weekend of activities for the pups.
The seventh annual Pooch Plunge will be 9 a.m.-3 p.m. today at the outdoor pool of the Carson City Aquatic Facility.

Carson City Library to celebrate week leading up to added days
Submitted by editor on Fri, 05/29/2015 - 6:11pmWhen Sam Wilson, 15, heard the Carson City Library was extending its hours to include Sundays beginning in June, he was overjoyed. “That’s exciting news,” he said. “The more they’re open, the more opportunity there is for me to go and learn new technology.”
Wilson, who just completed his freshman year at Carson High School, rides his bike nearly every day to the Carson City Library where he spends his afternoons in the Digitorium doing his homework and surfing the Internet.

Project 150 is an organization that helps homeless high school students in the Las Vegas and Reno area. "PSN" has been selling raffle tickets, in the first quarter, at the monthly luncheons as well as collecting items for the homeless students of Project 150.

Free Babysitting Cetification for Middle School and High School Students
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 03/05/2015 - 10:08amCarson City 4-H is hosting its annual babysitting certification program, a series of five classes, April 6-10, from 3 to 5 p.m. The program focuses on being a successful babysitter with topics ranging from ages and stages of development, caring for more than one child, basic first aid, how to make healthy snacks/meals and how to approach prospective employers. Must attend all five classes to receive certificate.
Many parents prefer to hire a certified sitter. There is a limited amount of space, so please call Jim Barcellos at 887-2252 for more information and to reserve a spot.

Students who are taking the proficiency tests will begin their school day at the regular time of 7:45 am, while those not taking the proficiencies will start their school day at 10:30 a.m.

Carson High among Nevada schools picked to study outer solar system

Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College in Carson City, students and residents interested in astronomy can explore new worlds as part of a five-year citizen science astronomy research project to study the outer solar system.
Two planetary scientists, Marc Buie and John Keller, announced Tuesday the expansion of RECON — the Research and Education Collaborative Occultation Network — to 60 communities across the entire western United States.

Professional Saleswomen of Nevada Announce their 1st Quarter Charity

All the proceeds raised from monthly raffles will be donated to this wonderful organization. Project 150 started in December 2011 to help homeless High School students In Las Vegas. The effort has now expanded to Reno. "PSN" is looking to help Project 150 reach the Carson City area as well.
Jazz workshop Saturday for Carson City middle school and high school students

The workshop will give students an introduction to jazz technique and an opportunity for hands-on experience playing with professional musicians. Sessions include Jazz Rhythm with drummer Lee Warner, Scales and Chords with saxophonist Nat Kline, and Improvisation with trumpeter Jef Derderian. Admission to the workshop is free.

Leslie Cain named Carson City director for the Sierra Nevada Association of Realtors

In this role, she represents the Carson City community at the Association's monthly board of directors meetings. She also actively participates in important decisions regarding disbursement of charitable funds to non-profit organizations, scholarships to local high school students, as well as many other key topics affecting the Association and its members.
