WNC Softball: Wildcats Show Fight in Doubleheader Split with Coyotes

Giving up a three-run edge in the final inning could emotionally deflate a team. College of Southern Nevada's comeback only served as more motivation for the Western Nevada Wildcats on Saturday.

Major League Baseball scouts coming out to see highly touted right-handed pitcher Phil Bickford on Thursday saw a couple of other arms to focus their radar guns on in Henderson.

Western Nevada College sophomore right-hander Max Karnos allowed just one hit through the first six innings and sophomore reliever Connor Zwetsch threw 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief as the Wildcats nearly handed Bickford his second defeat of the season.

WNC completed a four-game Scenic West Athletic Conference softball sweep of Colorado Northwestern on Saturday at Edmonds Sports Complex in Carson City.

The Wildcats backed the six-hit pitching of Kristina George by lining a homer and five doubles in a 6-3 opening-game victory, then Gabriella Canibeyaz delivered two hits and two RBI in a 7-3 second-game victory.

Both Nevada Senate and Assembly in Carson City opened with Hindu invocations on Friday that were presented with verses from the world’s oldest existing scripture.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed delivered the opening prayers from ancient Sanskrit scriptures before both houses of the Nevada Legislature. After Sanskrit delivery, Zed spoke and read the English translation of the prayers. Sanskrit is considered a sacred language in Hinduism and root language of Indo-European languages.

Western Nevada College's losing softball record certainly can be deceiving. The Wildcats gave second-ranked Salt Lake Community College all it wanted in their Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday at Bruin Field in Taylorsville, Utah.

Lesniak's 4-for-4 performance at the plate in WNC's 13-0 victory in the opener also included a solo homer and a double. The Wildcats completed the sweep with an 8-6 victory as Canibeyaz went 3 for 4 and Nicole Lesniak shined in relief of starting pitcher Sadee Sorensen.

For the second straight week, weather has caused a switch in playing sites for the Western Nevada College baseball team.

The Wildcats' four-game Scenic West Athletic Conference series with Salt Lake Community College has been moved to John L. Harvey Field in Carson City. Salt Lake City received three inches of snow on Tuesday and cold conditions were forecast until later in the week.
