Outdoors with Don Q: Reserve March 1 for a highly-popular fundraiser

This is an annual reminder of my all-time favorite fund raiser. The highly-popular and fun-filled, Carson Valley Chukar Club fundraiser will be held at the Douglas County Fairgrounds on Saturday, March 1. This year’s fund raiser will be its 28th version.

Chukar:
If you are brand-new to this area, about now you are probably wondering what in the world is something called a "Chukar?"

Outdoors with Don Q: Some suggestions for 2013 Christmas gifts

With all of the crazy “Black Friday” shopping madness (shootings, knifings, fights, etc.) now behind us, we can begin, once again, to think rationally about ideas for Christmas gifts for that special person(s) in our lives.

So, if you were not part of that frenzied mob scene on the day after Thanksgiving, or if you are still scratching your head about what to get for that person, here are some “Don Q” suggestions for Christmas gifts:

Student youth group gives Carson City Grocery Outlet a helping hand

Grocery Outlet in Carson City was given a helping hand this week when youth members of Carson River Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teamed up to help staff cleanup after the store closed. The youth group meets weekly to learn, have fun and often to provide community service.
These photos were submitted by Michelle Dudley.

Outdoors with Don Q: A few more days left to fish many California waters

This is my annual reminder that many California waters will close to fishing on Friday, November 15. So if you want to fish any of them, you better hustle because you are rapidly running out of time.

Those waters will not re-open until the last Saturday in April next year (April 26, 2014), and that is a long, long time to wait to wet your line. Here is a partial list of some of the nearby waters that will be closing:

Don Q's Nevada and Northern California fishing report for week of Oct. 23-30

Don Q Outdoors: Go high to fish before it's too late

It’s now officially Fall and it's that unique time of the year again.
This is when the days are very noticeably shorter, the weather is much crisper and Old Man Winter is lurking just around the corner, with all of his cold, frost, snow and ice.

If you were not aware of it, The Sierra Nevada Mountains got their first snow of the year this last Saturday! Winter is on its way!

So, if you would like a last try at fishing some of our higher altitude lakes before they freeze up or are closed for the 2013 season on November 15, here are some suggestions on where to go:

Carson City Sheriff's Office cautions motorists as motorcycles head to Street Vibrations

With Street Vibrations rapidly approaching, thousands of motorcyclists are projected to be arriving in Carson City and the surrounding areas. Many events will be held during this time, as riders from around the country come to enjoy this popular event.

As drivers, we will need to pay attention to those riding around us. Not all operators of motorcycles are experienced riders and crashes may occur if both driver and rider are not paying full attention to their surroundings.

Don Q Outdoors: Go high to have fun, fish and stay cool

Sigh, it’s that time of the year again.

This is my annual reminder that if you’re someone like me, summer’s sweltering heat is not much fun. I do not like summer months.

I am an outdoors person who dearly loves the cold, frost, ice and snow of winter, and I absolutely and totally wilt at this time of the year.

And, especially, right now, with our record-setting temps in triple digits.
I am miserable and grouchy during hot weather months.

To be honest, I dislike the weather anytime it gets past 80-85 degrees.
