The Community of Carson City, and anyone in the world with access to the internet, now has an opportunity to visit CHS. Carson High School’s new Digital Media class launched their Senators Now webpage Feb. 1.

Carson Victory Rollers will host the fitting "It Was Shove at First Sight" scrimmage this Sunday at the Carson City Community Center gym to raise money for Nevada Project Heartbeat. The community is invited.

Winterfest 2018 is here, and the theme is “Into the Depps of Winterfest"— as in Johnny Depp — with a week stuffed full of fun activities. Depp says, “I think the thing to do is to enjoy the ride while you’re on it” and this is what Carson High School students intend to do all week long.

It is finally Friday, so let’s kick off the weekend. Start the day at Dunkin Donuts on Highway 50 and you’ll be treated to some free coffee, samples, and giveaways. Kids will have a great time during Books and Brags Storytime Adventures at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada. The 19th annual Senior Fair at the Douglas County Community Center offers up a plethora of information, and is open to the public, no matter your age. You’ll always find a new headlining comic inside the Nugget at Carson Comedy: tonight Alex Elkin takes the stage.

What happened at the Jan. 4 Carson High School Varsity Basketball game was so amazing that it moved many people to tears and filled them with love for their country and for each other. It all began in the usual fashion.

A Senator defensive effort was on full display Friday night in Carson City as Carson blanked the Wooster Colts by a score of 58-29 in boys hoops.

We promise ourselves each year that this is THE year we are going to get in shape, redo our overall look, read the classics, find a new job, travel the world, run for political office, or do something different to keep ourselves current and relevant.

A tale of two halves took place in Morse Burley Gym Tuesday, as a 13 point halftime lead by Carson vanished in the fourth quarter, ending in a 55-45 loss to Damonte Ranch.

Playing in the snow probably isn’t an option for this weekend, but Singing in the Rain sure is. The kids of Youth Theater Carson City present a junior adaptation of the musical favorite this weekend and next. The Experimental Aircraft Association hosts ‘Young Eagle’ flights every few months at the Carson Airport to give kids 8 – 17 a plane ride to remember. Help out the Dayton Food Bank during their ‘Stuff-a-Cop-Car’ food drive at the Smith’s in Dayton; unexpired non-perishables of all kinds are appreciated. Happy Thursday, Carson City. Today has plenty to offer, it just depends on what you’re in the mood for. Meet local author, Mark S. Bacon, at Browsers Corner Book Store; he’ll be signing copies of his newest book and share some insight into the writing process. Artist Andreana Donahue will make an appearance in the OXS Gallery at the Nevada Arts Council during a reception to honor her exhibit, Wintering Over. The Carson Victory Rollers are looking for new members of their roller derby team.

Carson City area boys and girls looking to improve their basketball skills this winter now have an option with three camps designed around developing and building abilities they can take onto the high school court and maybe even beyond.

The V&T Flea Market has arrived for a weekend stay Saturday in the Carson Colony Gym in Carson City.

From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, vending tables full jewelry, a tools, crafts, collectibles, antiques, and souvenirs caught the eyes of many spectators and customers in attendance.

Brownies and cookies were also up for sale, filling hungry stomachs throughout the event.

The event continues Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

After back to back three-day weekends, this one may feel a little short. Grab onto the hours allotted and have a good time. The monthly downtown wine walk is a great way to catch up with friends after the bustle of the holiday season. The annual Be Bold, Run in the Cold Winter Trail Series offers the Winter Round-up 5 or 10K. If staying active is a resolution, then a brisk run in our hills fits the bill. For something less strenuous, you can join our Parks and Recreation Department for a Winter Wonderland Walk along the Carson River.

Ease into the new year with something fun. Trivia junkies have two options for showing off their smarts: DJ Trivia at the Fox Brewpub and the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Sassafras are both free to play and open to all ages. Muscle Powered offers two trail hikes on Tuesday. Today take an easy walk along the Mexican Ditch area in the morning, or opt for something more strenuous along the Linear Ditch this evening. Songwriter Canyon White leads a jam at Living the Good Life: strum along or just sit back and enjoy the music.

With a refresh underway allowing for improvements inside its 22,000-square-foot building, limited Carson City Library services will be available over the next two weeks 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays at Adams Hub Studio, 177 W. Proctor St.

The long holiday weekend has ended, but the school district’s winter break has just begun. The Carson City Library invites everyone to participate in their Winter Read-a-thon; cuddle up with a book during these cold winter days. The Carson City Library welcomes the community as it launches the inaugural nationwide Winter Reading Challenge beginning today, Friday, Dec. 22, through Jan. 5, 2018.

The Read-A-Thon kick-off event will be held Friday from 4-6 p.m. at the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center, 850 E William St, Carson City. The presentation will include songs, stories, puppets, and activities. Also, you will be able to register for the Winter Read-A-Thon.

There are some fairly excited kids throughout the valley. This last Friday before Christmas marks the beginning of winter break. The Carson City Library invites everyone in the community to participate in the annual Winter Read-a-thon with a goal of 90,000 minutes read (or listened to) over the next two weeks. Sign up on-line or at their kick-off event this afternoon. Comedian John Mencarelli headlines Carson Comedy inside the Carson Nugget, and you’ll find the Rebekah Chase Band on stage in their Loft. Friday, Dec. 22

Thursday, December 21 is the winter solstice, making it the longest night and the shortest day of the year. With Christmas just a few days away, the holiday activities are still going strong. Share your wish list with Santa at Red’s Old 395 tonight and you’ll walk away with a free photograph. Your ugliest sweater is invited to make an appearance at the Carson Cigar Company; bring a white elephant gift if you’d like to participate in the gift exchange.

On a morning like this, I realize that I need to ask Santa for some windshield wipers. Stay safe out there, Carson City, the roads are wet. The Carson Library is usually a great place to retreat on days like this, but you’ll find their doors closed for the next few weeks: time for a makeover. If you’d like to check out a book or use the wireless internet, you’ll find a ‘pop-up’ library in the Community Center this week, and in the Adams Hub on Proctor Street next week.

Winter is settling in, even if our mountains are lacking their snowy blanket. It’s chilly out there, but the members of Muscle Powered head out for a walk and a hike every Tuesday unless the rain or snow is falling. Join them tonight for a walk around downtown Carson City to take in the twinkling lights and decorations; there will even be a stop afterward for a warm beverage. If you’d rather exercise your brain, the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Sassafras and DJ Trivia at the Fox Brewpub are your choices.

Contractors are hard at work in the Carson City Library, tearing out carpet to replace the flooring and paint the walls. While the library will not reopen until late January, limited services will be available during the closure.

It may be Monday, but the next one on the way is Christmas. If you still have some loved ones on your holiday shopping list, the Craft Fair at the Carson Mall is sure to have something for everyone. Monday also means football. Watch the Falcons take on the Buccaneers at Living the Good Life. You’ll find good food, good drinks, and the game on all of their screens. Put some swing in your step at Carson Lanes. The High Sierra Swing Dance Club meets weekly to learn some new dance moves and put them into action. Santa has been spotted at Red’s Old 395: from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

You are in for a Holiday Treat today; the annual Carson City Symphony Winter Concert with Victorian Dancers in beautiful costumes takes to the stage. Take in a play at the Brewery Arts Center or play BINGO at the Senior Center. The Santa Train, the Living Nativity at the Methodist Church, and a remembrance ceremony at Walton’s Chapel are on the list, too. Sunday’s aren’t sleepy this time of year, so read on and take a look at your options.

The Carson City area is awash in entertainment, shopping, and family-friendly options this weekend. Santa Claus is popping up all over, including at Benson Feed for the annual CASI Pet Photos with St. Nick and aboard the train at our Railroad Museum’s Santa Train. The musical ‘Honk, Jr’ for the young ones and Love/Sick for the older crowd are on the stage at the Brewery Arts Center. Spend the day at the Silver Saddle Ranch: their annual Holiday Open House is the perfect time to explore their trails and learn more about the working ranch’s preservation.

Senior Projects, a Carson High School graduation requirement, are in full swing, and every year a host of new topics are set into motion by students who take it very seriously, students who take it upon themselves to make a difference in the lives of others. One such senior, Sarah Sever, is motivated to create awareness about a wide-ranging and ever growing atrocity affecting young women in America.

Carson City Library staff will soon begin packing up materials in anticipation of closing for up to eight weeks during a project to refresh the interior.
