Senator Square: Carson City community makes Carson High School events possible

Ever spend some time watching high school students having fun? They do it so naturally. There is no lack of excitement happening at Carson High School, and one of the more amazing aspects of this high school is everyone is invited to attend every event.

Wednesday, April 26: Things to do in Carson City

Today has quite a bit going for it, hard to believe that it’s a Wednesday. Learn more about the Craft Brew industry in Nevada and how to support its growth at the ‘Free My Beer Festival’ at Fox Brewpub. Fritch Elementary School is the beneficiary of tonight’s ‘McTeacher’ Night fundraiser at the South Carson McDonalds; both drive-thru and dine-in orders count. It’s Red vs. Blue in the Morse Burley Gym at Carson High School. The traditional basketball game between Democrat and Republican legislators also raises money for local seniors.

Today has a lot going for it. Food Truck Friday is the theme of the new United Federal Credit Union’s Grand Opening week: you can find them across the street from Mill’s Park on Williams St. Earth Day weekend kicks off at Western Nevada College with a Gem and Mineral Sale during the day, followed by a presentation by World Renowned Scientist: Dr. Charles Goldman in Marlette Hall at 7 p.m. Break a leg to the cast of ‘Harvey.’ The Procenium Players open their two weekend run at the Brewery Arts Center’s Black Box Theater tonight.

Jellybean hangover, anyone? Monday always arrives too quickly, but luckily it has some good things going for it. The ‘Spring has Sprung’ Art Show opens today at the Nevada Artists Association Gallery at the Brewery Arts Center. Get into the swing of things with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club’s ‘Night Out’ at El Charro Avita. J and M Productions offer over 60 thousand songs to choose from, so karaoke at the Firkin and Fox is always a hit.

Carson Stomps Reno In Football

Friday night at Carson High School, one of two semi final games were played to decide who would advance to the Northern Regional Championships as the Carson Senators took on the Reno Huskies. The contest would be the last home football game at Carson High School for some months with the Regional Championship already set to take place at Manogue Saturday, Nov. 29.

Researchers hope to stop Asian Carp in South Dakota

Abetted by last summer's record flooding, Asian carp are continuing their advance up the Big Sioux and other Missouri River tributaries, as researchers and wildlife officials gear up to deal with the invasion.
"They're here, so the big question is, how many are we going to get?'' said Brian Graeb, an assistant professor in South Dakota State University's wildlife and fisheries department.

Carson City School District president 'amazed' marijuana charge dropped against principal

At least one Carson City School District official is troubled by the outcome of Friday's misdemeanor driving under the influence guilty plea by Carson Middle School Principal Sam Santillo.
School board trustee president Norm Scoggin said he's "amazed" that a misdemeanor charge of possession of less than an ounce of marijuana was dropped by the Washoe County District Attorney's Office.
