WNC Geology Club presents Gem and Mineral Sale this Friday

The public can start or grow its own mineral collection by attending the Geology Club’s third annual Gem and Mineral Sale that runs from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Bristlecone Building lobby. Plan to come early for the best selection.
Carson City 6th graders chill via video conference with scientist in Antarctica

Carson City students beam interplanetary messages to Mars Rover

The program, which is ranked No. 33 of 199 schools in U.S. News and World Report’s “2018 Best Online MBA Programs” category, has now graduated six cohorts.

Afterwards, take a stroll with the Carson City Historical Society and learn about the history of our big downtown trees. Tonight, Carson Comedy takes over the Carson Nugget and the Brewery Arts Center as Dan Gabriel and Chris Franjola bring the laughs.

UNR seismology lab: Saturday's magnitude 3.9 one of 300 earthquakes near Gerlach
Submitted by editor on Tue, 05/17/2016 - 11:32amThe Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno reported a magnitude 3.9 earthquake located near the communities of Gerlach and Empire, about 75 miles north of Reno. The earthquake occurred at 7:20 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2016. The magnitude 3.9 is the largest of just over 300 earthquakes that have been located in the area since April 20.

WNC to Feature Renowned Climate Scientist Charles Goldman for Earth Day lecture

The event is sponsored by the Western Nevada College Foundation. It will be held Friday, April 22, 7 pm at Marlette Hall at the Carson City campus.
Charles R. Goldman is a Distinguished Professor of Limnology Emeritus Department of Environmental Science and Policy UCD President, World Water and Climate Foundation who is known around the world.
UNR's Nevada Seismological Lab earthquake forum to feature global and regional experts
Submitted by editor on Tue, 04/12/2016 - 1:18pmInternational experts will join with local seismologists in a public forum this month to inform the region on the dangers and probabilities of devastating earthquakes, and how to recover economically as a region.
Contrary to the general public perception, the California-Nevada border region is at risk for large, magnitude 7-plus earthquakes striking the greater Reno-Tahoe region. In a magnitude 6 earthquake, according to FEMA estimates, the region could suffer billions of dollars in damage: $1.9 billion in the Reno/Sparks area and $590 million in the Stateline area.

Thousands of Nevada earthquakes kept UNR seismologists busy in 2015
Submitted by editor on Thu, 12/31/2015 - 11:02amMore than 17,500 earthquakes were recorded in 2015 by the University of Nevada, Reno’s Nevada Seismological Laboratory. That includes the 231 recent quakes in south Reno and the magnitude 4.8 in Caliente that shook Las Vegas in January 2015.

Great Nevada Earthquake of 1915 spurs reminder for 2015 Great Nevada Shakeout
Submitted by editor on Tue, 09/29/2015 - 12:41pmAbout 100 years ago Nevada was rocked by the largest earthquake in its history, the 1915 magnitude 7.3 Pleasant Valley earthquake south of Winnemucca. Only a few large earthquakes since then have rumbled the state, but nothing near the surface scar — with a vertical offset as high as 19 feet – that stretched 35 miles across Nevada’s Great Basin.

- The Gay-Straight Alliance is going to be putting up a respect wall - a giant poster for people to write what they respect about someone else.

UNR Seismological Laboratory monitors earthquake activity in far northwest Nevada

University of Nevada, Reno seismologists are monitoring the on-going activity that includes three earthquakes larger than magnitude 4.0 since mid-July, including the largest of these, a magnitude 4.6 on July 16.
