Western Nevada College may be finished with its semester, but they don’t just shutter the doors and pack it in. Go check out the Bristlecone Art Gallery where you’ll find a plethora of True-Grit inspired artwork: it’s pretty spectacular what these artists have done with a simple deck of playing cards. It may be a little too wet for this evening’s Muscle Powered hike, but you’ll find other opportunities to burn off a little steam. Try Carson Lanes Country/Pop Dance Night, or try your hand at all-ages trivia at the Fox Brewpub or Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint.

Carson City is in the midst of the NEA’s Big Read, with True Grit by Charles Portis at the designated book. Julie Buntin’s tome, ‘Marlena: A Novel,’ is the chosen Nevada Reads book, and Nevada Humanities has brought the author here for a discussion and reading. Find Ms. Buntin at the Nevada State Library and Archives at lunchtime or hear her thoughts at the Minden Library this evening. Keep an eye to the skies if you’re interested in today’s Muscle Powered hikes; they will walk on the indoor track at the Multi-purpose Athletic Center if it’s rainy.

It’s Bike Month in Carson City, and the ladies’ Tuesday bike ride up Ash Canyon has returned for the season. You’ll need a helmet and a trail-ready bike if you’d like to join in. A hike up Goni Road with Muscle Powered will be worth the views and a good work-out. Mile High Jazz Band has teamed up with vocalist Jakki Ford for this month’s performance; you’ll find them tonight at Living the Good Life. TUESDAY, May 8: Things to do in Carson City

I’m ready for spring. My allergies don’t seem to be as enthusiastic, but I love watching our valley awaken from its gray winter slumber. Muscle Powered’s guided hikes are a great way to explore our town and learn about the many trails hidden in the hills. The Carson City Classic Cinema Club gets an extra-special visitor at tonight’s film viewing; STRAZZ, the Carson City Symphony’s Youth String Orchestra will be performing before ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ lights up the screen. Sandie LaNae and Arlene La Ferry are the featured authors at Browsers Corner Book Store this evening.

The Senior Center recently hosted ‘Carson’s Got Talent,’ so they know the caliber of performers hidden in our midst. Auditions for their annual show, Senior Follies, continue this evening and are open to all ages. CCAI’s art exhibit in the Community Development Building on E. Proctor features work from several high school artists. Join them in celebrating this young talent at a reception tonight. The day should be gorgeous; a hike with Muscle Powered is the perfect way to embrace the spring.

Well, we won’t see any wet stuff today, but the clear skies could mean a nip to the air. You can join Muscle Powered for one of today’s two walks, but I won’t blame you if you’d prefer an indoor activity. Join the Carson Library for coloring night; they have plenty of pictures to choose from. Bobbie Ann Howell is at the center of today’s Artist Reception at the Nevada Arts Council. You’ll hear her discuss her exhibit ‘Vistas and Viewpoints.’ Head down to Pizza Factory to lend a hand to Mark Twain Elementary School: just make sure to mention you are there for the fundraiser.

Congratulations go out to the Mile High Jazz Band; they’ll be celebrating 17 years of monthly performances during tonight’s gig at Living the Good Life. If you’d like to learn more about drones, those little flying robots, then tonight’s installment of the Sierra Nevada Forum is for you. They’ll be covering the versatility of drones, and fully expect you to be surprised. Chili’s Restaurant welcomes Mother-son duos for a night of quality time. Super-hero costumes are encouraged, and bring a camera, Darth Vader will be there for pictures.

TUESDAY, April 10: Things to do in Carson City

A very happy Tuesday to you. The Classic Cinema Club is changing it up a little tonight. Their showing of ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ is going to begin an hour earlier than usual, due to its length. Don’t worry, though, the trivia portion will take place during intermission, instead of before the film. The Carson Valley Trails Association is hosting their annual meeting and social in the Douglas County Community Center. If you’re curious about exploring the hills south of Carson, this is the perfect place to learn more.

As the days get longer and warmer, it’s worth it to check out the many trails and paths throughout the valley. Muscle Powered, our local hiking, biking, and trail-building group, leads guided hikes and walks a few times every week, including two on Tuesdays. Don’t let spring break be an excuse not to use your noggin. Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Sassafras and DJ Trivia at Fox Brewpub are both open to all ages and free to play. You’ve only got a few days to see the Winter Art Show in the Nevada Artist Association Gallery; their new show, ‘Spring has Sprung,’ will open Sunday.

It’s hard to believe that this is the first day of spring: we had nicer weather in January. Expect the next few days to bring a mix of wet stuff, and probably some gusty winds our way.

I hope you got your fill of sunshine yesterday because we have got some cloudy days on the horizon. Luckily, there are enough things going on to keep you distracted, and inside away from the rain. Jazz and Poetry, courtesy of the Mile High Jazz Band, takes place tonight at Comma Coffee, with the lovely June Joplin on vocals. Trade a pint for a pint.

Happy Tuesday, Carson City. Every week, Muscle Powered explores three different trails during their guided hikes. Today, join them as they walk sections of the multi-use path along the freeway. You’ll always find trivia at Fox Brewpub and at Sassafras on Tuesdays, but now you can also participate in Family Game Night at Battle Born Social or Celebrity Bingo at Westside Pour House. If you know where to look, every day is National something-or-other day. Today gets pancakes, and the International House of Pancakes is celebrating accordingly with a free short stack. It is a fundraiser for the Children’s Medical Network, so leave something for the organization in addition to the tip. CASA, Court-appointed Special Advocates, is always looking for more volunteers to stand up for children. Join them for coffee and find out more about this great organization.

I know we were expecting yesterday to be cold, but that was downright bitter. More of the same can be expected, with a possibility of snow tomorrow. Luckily, you’ll find plenty of things to enjoy indoors. Learn about Nevada silver screen icons like Marilyn Monroe, aliens, and the King of Rock and Roll during a CCAI Nevada Neighbors presentation by long-time film reviewer, Robin Holabird. Sierra Nevada Forums brings experts from various backgrounds to shed light on difficult and complex topics facing our society.

A very happy Tuesday to you, Carson City. You’ll find some great family friendly options today including Storytime Adventures at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada or Family Game Night at Battle Born Social, that also includes a free meal for kids. Father-daughter night at Chili’s restaurant promotes communication and quality time, and will get you a free dessert, as well. Our local Classic Cinema Club features a ‘new’ old flick every month; don’t miss their showing of Casablanca tonight, it’s one of Humphrey Bogart’s best performances.

The very talented students in the Carson Middle School Jazz Band have been practicing up a storm to get ready for tonight’s joint performance with the Mile High Jazz Band. Their Jazz Extravaganza kicks off at the Carson City Community Center at 7 p.m. Swing by Firehouse Subs for dinner tonight and you’ll be helping the Carson/Douglas Relay for Life in addition to filling your tummy. Smarty pants are encouraged during trivia night at the Fox Brewpub and Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint.

Take some time for something fun today. If you’ve got little ones at home, a trip to the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada is always a good bet. Get there early for their ‘Books and Brags’ program. Learn something new on the dance floor at Carson Lanes; every week they’ll cover a different line dance. The day may start out a little drizzly, but that isn’t supposed to last. However, Muscle Powered will opt for the Multi-purpose Athletic Center for their morning walk if the rain persists. Enjoy some old-time music at Comma Coffee: CW and Mr. Spitmore make an appearance during lunch. Jam out with songwriter Canyon White tonight at Living the Good Life.

It’s looking like another rainy day, so there’s a good chance that Muscle Powered will choose to walk at the Multi-purpose Athletic Center rather than their chosen trails, it’s safer that way. You’ll find a power-packed quintet at Comma Coffee delivering a healthy dose of Mile High Jazz. Sierra Nevada Forums bring some truths about our local wildlife populations to this month’s event. Ease into the new year with something fun. Trivia junkies have two options for showing off their smarts: DJ Trivia at the Fox Brewpub and the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Sassafras are both free to play and open to all ages. Muscle Powered offers two trail hikes on Tuesday. Today take an easy walk along the Mexican Ditch area in the morning, or opt for something more strenuous along the Linear Ditch this evening. Songwriter Canyon White leads a jam at Living the Good Life: strum along or just sit back and enjoy the music.

TUESDAY: Jan. 2

The long holiday weekend has ended, but the school district’s winter break has just begun. The Carson City Library invites everyone to participate in their Winter Read-a-thon; cuddle up with a book during these cold winter days. New Year’s Eve is just days away and the annual Black Tie Gala thrown by the Friends of the Carson City Library still has tickets available. Go HERE for more information and to buy tickets.

Winter is settling in, even if our mountains are lacking their snowy blanket. It’s chilly out there, but the members of Muscle Powered head out for a walk and a hike every Tuesday unless the rain or snow is falling. Join them tonight for a walk around downtown Carson City to take in the twinkling lights and decorations; there will even be a stop afterward for a warm beverage. I’m always surprised at how busy Tuesdays can get around here. Today, however, you can also enjoy the monthly Mile High Jazz Band gig at Comma Coffee, with a special serving of poetry. Christmas Beers are on tap at Cowboy Liquors for their weekly tasting event.

If you’re looking for a new career, it may be time to head back to school – Carson High School, that is. The Carson City School District is looking to fill a number of positions and is holding a job fair this afternoon. See what the talented students in the Symphony Youth Strings program have been up to at tonight’s "Around the World in Music" concert at the Community Center. A special candle lighting ceremony to remember loved ones takes place this evening at Fitzhenry’s Funeral Home. All those who have lost someone are welcome to participate. Black Friday, small business Saturday, cyber Monday: I didn’t name these, but I can truly get behind Day of Giving Tuesday. Carson City is home to several great charities and non-profits that could use your financial love. Throw a few dollars at your favorite one if you’re able. It’s not warm outside, but a brisk hike will warm you up. Muscle Powered shows off one of Carson City’s great trails every Tuesday afternoon. If you’d rather exercise your brain, DJ Trivia at the Fox Brewpub or the Geeks who Drink Pub Quiz at Sassafras are a great mix of friends and friendly competition.

Last week, a basketball game among rivals Douglas High and Carson High inspired more comradery than animosity as it raised money for the teens injured in the Nov. 9 rollover. Tonight, an alumni hoops battle takes place to raise more money; go cheer them on, we are all winners in this game. The weather should be wonderful for this afternoon’s downtown walk with Muscle Powered. The Friends of the Carson City Library bring author J.L. Pattison to Browsers Corner for their November meet and greet.

It’s time for Tuesday. Every week you’ll find a new trail to discover with Muscle Powered; this week it’s the Linear Ditch Trail which runs from Governors Field to the Moffet Open Space Trail. Jakki Ford takes the mic when the Mile High Jazz Band hits the stage at Comma Coffee. Sierra Forums gives free presentations on a diverse blend of topics with area experts. Sustainable Living is the subject of tonight’s forum at the Brewery Arts Center.

It’s wintry out there, but if you aren’t afraid of the wind-chill, enjoy a walk along the Linear Ditch Trail with Parks and Recreation. Spaghetti is on the menu at J’s Old Town Bistro in Dayton. You’ll be helping out the Lady Dust Devils Basketball program while enjoying delicious pasta. Join the Carson City Classical Cinema Club for this month’s flick, The Fabulous Dorseys, and make sure you’re there for the trivia portion. Speaking of trivia, Tuesdays are packed with it. Everywhere you look, we are ready for Halloween: skeletons and cobwebs, pumpkins and monsters, witches and headstones. Tonight is the real deal. There have been several Halloween celebrations already, but nothing beats trick-or-treat night. Get started at the Carson Mall, then head over to the Nevada Humane Society for even more candy. The Downtown Business Association welcomes the costumed kids to their Candy Crawl. But there’s nothing quite like the historic west side when it comes to Halloween.
