Our property is 2.5 acres in size. That’s bigger than many people have and huge for folks living in apartments or condominiums. And, some people don’t have any yards at all.

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties holds its monthly breakfast meeting for the Lyon and Storey region on Thursday August 10th at 9am at the Silver Springs Community Center, 2945 Fort Churchill Street.

Guest speakers include Valerie Melendez, Tribal Economic Development Director with Northern Nevada Development Authority (NNDA), and Craig Butcher, Veteran Employment Services Representative with Nevada Job Connect.

Thanks to support from our generous neighbors in Northern Nevada, progress is being made at the Veterans Healing Camp complex in Silver Springs. There is an exciting new life to the property. The three-bedroom group home has been completely cleaned out, repainted and new carpeting has been installed. There is a veteran moving into the home who is ready to help other veterans in need.

When people mention Reno, unique flora is not usually the first thing one would picture, however Reno has a plethora of unique rare plant species. Join Janel Johnson, a botanist with the Nevada Natural Heritage Program to learn about the less common species of plants around Reno. You will also get to learn more about the Nevada Natural Heritage Program and its mission to collect data on all of Nevada’s flora and fauna.

I’m a lazy gardener. I try to minimize my work load while maximizing aesthetic appeal and practical function. I avoid plants that are needy, like those that need extra fertilizer or pruning or those that are susceptible to insects or disease. I’m not into planting annuals.

A 49-year-old Carson City man was arrested Monday for suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly threatening a maintenance man with a knife at a North Carson Street RV park, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Sunny and and dry conditions will give Carson City and western Nevada another shot of pleasant outdoor weather for gardening and other weekend activities, but it will short-lived with spring showers on the move next week, according to the National Weather Service.

Carson Tahoe Health, a leading healthcare system in Northern Nevada, and The Greenhouse Project, an agricultural and education-based nonprofit, announced an expanded partnership Thursday to build the Foothill Garden on Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center’s campus.

The sixth annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show will be held April 28-29, 2017 in the South Tahoe Middle School multipurpose room.

Space is being increased to allow more vendors from the region to participate in the only event of its type on the South Shore. A free children's planting area is also being added to the two day show that runs from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m on Friday, and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m on Saturday.

Jan Stiegman, a Carson City resident, professional genealogist, family history lecturer, and a former volunteer instructor in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, UT, will be presenting a lecture entitled “Any Family History that is Not Sourced is Mythology.”

The topic of gardening can, at times, appear unchanging. Plant needs are consistent and basic: water, support, nutrients, sunlight and carbon dioxide. Seeds are generally planted in the same way. Maintenance doesn’t change much. How many ways are there to harvest a tomato, an apple or other delectable edible? However, since gardening is one of our most popular hobbies, it is big business.

Born in Pittsburgh, PA., the second eldest child of Joseph Patrick McGuire Jr. and Sylvia Francis May, Joe spent his early childhood in and around that area, moving often due to his Father’s work.

In 1964, at the age of 13, he and his family moved to Carson City, the Capital of Nevada. It was there, playing in the school band, that Joe had discovered a love of music that would become the muse that he would follow the rest of his life.

Silver Springs, Nevada - There will be special holiday events and hours for Healthy Communities Coalition's Silver Stage Food Pantry, located at 3595 Ramsey Weeks Cutoff in Silver Springs. Normally, the Pantry is open Monday through Friday from 10am until 4pm. However, the Pantry will close at noon on Friday December 16th, and at noon on Monday, December 19th. The Pantry will also be closed on Tuesday, December 27th from noon to 2:30pm for a delivery.

About 25 years ago, I purchased a 1933 three-volume set of The Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture by L. H. Bailey, also known as Liberty Hyde Bailey. First published in 1914, the set was “a discussion, for the amateur, and the professional and commercial grower, of the kinds, characteristics and methods of cultivation of the species of plants grown in the regions of the United States and Canada for ornament, for fancy, for fruit and for vegetables: with keys to the natural families and genera, descriptions of the horticultural capabilities of the States and Provinces and dependent islands, and sketches of eminent horticulturists.”

I am ready for a winter respite from gardening chores. The leaves have been raked. I cut back the lavender and other woody perennials. I fertilized the lawns. Now I need to winterize my tools. Are your tools cleaned and stored for winter yet?
