The Salvation Army is collecting school supplies and backpacks for at-risk children through August 14. Children from Carson City, Douglas County and the surrounding communities will receive school supplies and backpacks as needed.

A sunny summer weekend has arrived and it brings numerous fun ways to seize the day. You can always head out hiking or spend the day at the pool, but the Carson City Fair is just here until Sunday. Farm animals, great exhibits, live entertainment, a carnival, and a bull-riding rodeo can be found at Fuji Park. Park your car at the Super Walmart on Topsy and you’ll be treated to a free shuttle. Go a little bit country at the Brewery Arts Center tonight; they are bringing back the Southern Drawl Band to the Minnesota Street Stage for this week’s free concert.

The Carson City School District has partnered with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada to house a new Pre-K (preschool) classroom at the Carson City clubhouse located at 1870 Russell Way. Twenty students between the ages of 4 and 5 will receive full-day instruction this school year Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

It’s almost like Christmas Day for some of us locals: the long awaited Taste of Downtown has finally arrived. Food, drink, live music, rubbing elbows with friends and neighbors, and a new wine-tasting add-on make this one of the best parties of the year. The morning brings an unparalleled opportunity: you’ve got one chance to walk, run, or bike right down the middle of the freeway before the new bypass is open to vehicle traffic alone. Grab your favorite four-legged friend and head to Adele’s: Dining for Dog Town is a delicious way to help out this amazing rescue organization.

Silver City, Nevada - Silver City Arts group is sponsoring “Outsider Show: Molly Brunhild Paintings,” at the Silver City School House (community center) at 385 High Street. The exhibit will feature the artist’s current work as well as work from earlier periods. The public is cordially invited to a free reception, which includes light refreshments and an opportunity to meet Molly Brunhild, on Saturday, July 22nd, 2017 from 1pm-5pm.

What to do, what to do? That’s the question that starts most every weekend. If you’ve got kids, test their mettle at the annual Capitol City Triathlon. Open to kids of all ages, they will bike, run, and swim their way to the finish line. The third annual Sassabration event kicks off with a multi-colored, costume bike parade from the Brewery Arts Center to the celebration at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint. Multiple bands, vendors, non-profit booths, free swimming at the Carson Hot Springs, not to mention the yummy food and drink available make this a not-to-be-missed festival.

What are you in the mood for? The Third and Curry Farmers Market is always a great place to start off your weekend. Kids won’t mind getting up early for the Young Eagle airplane flights at the Carson City Airport – they are free of charge for kids 8 – 17, you just need to be on time for registration. The Annual Chili Cook-off returns to Glen Eagles this weekend; with live music, a craft fair, and lots of yummy stuff to eat, raising money for Honor Flight has never tasted so good. Carson City Sheriff Office deputies broke up a large underage alcohol and marijuana party at a home Saturday night occupied by dozens of juveniles, issuing a handful of citations and making 11 arrests for obstructing officers, curfew violation and minor consuming.

It’s wine walk weekend, and depending on what kinds of days off you get, potentially the beginning of a four-day weekend. We will be celebrating the birthday of the United States of America on Tuesday, but there are some fun events to enjoy now. Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called to the Carson Mall late Thursday afternoon for a report of a possible structure fire. It turned out to be a fire in a trash can.

A weather system moving into the region Tuesday afternoon will kick up gusts potentially strong enough that it warranted the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a Wind Advisory.

UPDATE: A ground-breaking ceremony for the new Classy Seconds Thrift Store was held Thursday at the site located at 3591 Gordon Street in Carson City.

80+ homes are participating in the 17th annual Saratoga Springs Estates Garage Sale, selling furniture, household items, sports equipment and vehicles. Some homes selling food, water, lemonade. Community provides a porta-potty in the park for visitors/buyers. Starts 8 a.m. and closes by 3 p.m. Main entrance to community is at intersection of Stephanie and South Santa Barbara. Drivers may also enter off of Vicky at Jackie Lane or South Santa Barbara.

Summer? Winter? Flip a coin. I could’ve guessed the rain was coming, my lilacs just started to bloom. Don’t let your parade get rained out though, downtown Carson will march right through this wet stuff. The early Spring Farmers Market debuts today behind Due Sorella at Nevada and Musser Streets. Grab the kids and enjoy today’s open house with free admission at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada.
