As part of National Radon Action Month, the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is holding a free presentation of its Radon Education Program at the Carson City Senior Center, 901 Beverly Dr., on Monday, Jan. 25 at 6 p.m.

In addition to information on radon, the event will feature free radon test kits.

Historian and author Mark McLaughlin will present his program “Reign of the Storm King” in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, October 3, at 10 a.m.

Residents and travelers in the Sierra Nevada endure some of the most brutal winter storms in the world. Snowfall measured in feet, 180 M.P.H. wind gusts, and destructive avalanches. In 1890 extreme winter storms dumped 65 feet of snow and crushed railroad operations over Donner Pass.

Author Michael S. Green will discuss his book Nevada: A History of the Silver State in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Sunday, September 27, at 10:00 am.

Michael S. Green, a leading Nevada historian, provides a detailed survey of the Silver State’s past, from the arrival of the early European explorers, to the predominance of mining in the 1800s, to the rise of world-class tourism in the twentieth century, and more recent attempts to diversify the economy.

Nevada Gunfighters will be performing in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, September 26, at 10:00 am.
Nevada Gunfighters bring the old West to life with drama, comedy, historical portrayals and live action tales. Period dialog and authentic costumes, along with props and backdrops enhance their productions. As an added benefit to their presentations, the audience is educated in gun safety.

It’s back to school for the kids of Carson City. Please keep an eye out for little ones at crosswalks, and just be prepared for more traffic in general. Learning a thing or two isn’t just for the K-12 crowd, though. Head over to the Brewery Arts Center tonight for a free presentation on the History of Motown by John Shipley. Tickets to tomorrow’s Music of Motown performance at the Community Center are still available. The show features a band led by Lloyd Williams, popularly known as the lead singer of Otis Day and the Knights from Animal House.

Sierra Nevada Forums will host a free presentation on hiking and biking trails in Carson City on Thursday at the Brewery Arts Center Black Box Theatre.

"People who like trails get to use them, and if more people come into town there's better business and tourism,” said Anne Macquarie, moderator of the forum and founding president of Muscle Power: Citizens For A Bikeable and Walkable Carson City.



Northern Sierra Dutch Oven Group will demonstrate cooking with Dutch ovens in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 22, at 10:00 am.

Historian and author Frank X. Mullen will present his program “Westward Ho, Nevada” in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 29, at 10:00 am.

Chautauqua presenters Dana Lee Fruend, Yvonne Sullivan, Janet Baker and Judy Quinlan will portray Nevada pioneer women “Nellie Mighels Davis”, “Elizabeth ‘Lizzie’ Kincead”, “Whilhelmina Springmeyer” and “Hannah Clapp” in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 15, at 10:00 am.

Carson Valley Quilt Guild will demonstrate a Bed Turning in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, July 18, at 10 a.m.

Author of children’s adventure books, Mary Randall will speak on her book “A Walk Through the Woods” in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 8, at 10:00 am.

In her book Mary Randall asks the reader to believe in magic and have a zest for adventure as they trek along with Bobby and his pals through the Magic Kingdom of the woods. The reader will encounter talking animals, twists, turns, and secrets along with Indian spirits and ghosts of the Civil War. Randall hopes that readers will enjoy this amazing journey of surprises, mysteries and fun.

Chautauqua performer Kim Copél will portray Genoa Candy Dance creator Lillian Virgin Finnegan in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Sunday, June 28, at 10:00 am.

Locally known as the woman who started the Genoa Candy Dance in 1919, Lillian Virgin Finnegan is presented in 1914 after women gained the right to vote in Nevada. She was a suffragette and worked closely with Governor Emmett Boyle during his terms in office.

Professional Bullwhip Instructor Doc Durden will share his talent in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, June 27, at 10:00 am.

Chautauqua performer Michael E. Fischer will portray Carson Valley rancher Heinrich F. Dangberg in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park, Saturday, June 20 beginning at 10 a.m.

H.F. Dangberg Sr. came to the United States in 1848 as a young immigrant from the Kingdom of Prussia, and thence began a journey westward that ended in Douglas County, Nevada in 1853.

Western Nevada College history instructor and researcher Lane Simonian will offer a free presentation on Alzheimer’s disease on Thursday, April 17, 7 to 9 p.m. on the Carson City campus, in Bristlecone Building room 332.

Lane Simonian, who teaches European civilization at WNC, will focus his presentation on the role that peroxynitrites or potent neurotoxins have in triggering Alzheimer’s disease.

In recognition of the state’s sesquicentennial, Changing Faces and Places: Making Nevada is the second in a series of three Special Collections and University Archives exhibits commemorating 150 years of Nevada history at the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center on the University of Nevada, Reno campus.

Knowing how to comfort and support a loved one who has a terminal illness can be challenging. How can you help your loved one cope? How will you deal with your own grief?

A seminar for terminally ill individuals and their loved ones will be on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 3-4 p.m., at Sierra Nevada Cancer Center, 1460 S. Curry Street in Carson City.

The Comma Coffee Lecture Series continues with host David Dummar following the topics of Christianity, psychotherapy, and recovery. This month's free presentation is on Parenting insights. David is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor. He currently works as a Therapist with American Comprehensive Counseling Services in Carson City and Pioneer Health Resources in Reno.
