Pioneer Crossing Casinos funds United Way to Bring Dolly Parton’s 'Imagination Library' to children in Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Churchill counties

United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra received a donation from Pioneer Crossing Casinos that will provide 100 spots for children from birth to four years of age, living in Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Churchill counties to receive free books mailed monthly as part of a program that is a partnership between UWNNS and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

The 19th annual Senior Fair at the Douglas County Community Center offers up a plethora of information, and is open to the public, no matter your age. You’ll always find a new headlining comic inside the Nugget at Carson Comedy: tonight Alex Elkin takes the stage.

Join the Friends of the Nevada State Museum for a walking tour along the blue line; you’ll learn more about this historical district and the people who lived there. The Kings Canyon Waterfall is always spectacular, and today’s Muscle Powered Conditioning Hike will take you there and show off some amazing views of our valley. Thinking caps are optional at the Fox Brewpub during tonight’s DJ Trivia.

Engineering Fun for Kids this Tuesday in Silver City

SILVER CITY — Each summer since 2003, the historic Comstock community of Silver City has partnered with Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey to organize a free, public program with guest teachers leading fun, hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM).

Carson City Pedal Library provides books during summer school

Carson City Library’s Pedal Library will be busy delivering books to students attending summer school. Now through the end of June, the teardrop trailer pulled behind a bike will provide up to 60 pounds of books available at each school within the Carson City School District. The mobile library will also offer mobile wifi and charging station soon.

Each summer since 2003, the historic Comstock community of Silver City has offered free, public programming in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). Last week the annual program kicked off with a blues concert in the park, and this Tuesday, June 13 the program continues with science activities led by Jim Barcellos of University of Nevada Reno Cooperative Extension (UNCE).

Free Books for Canned Food! The Friends of the Library are having a canned food drive to support the Ron Wood Family Resource Center. Bring in a donation of canned or packaged food from Sept. 8 through Sept. 13 and pick out a free book of your choice.

One free book per donation. Especially needed now are staples such as canned tuna, beans, vegetables, fruit, pastas and sauces. Bring your donations to The Browsers Corner Book Store at 711 East Washington Street. Open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Come on out to The Great Carson City Literary Festival

The Great Carson City Literary Festival is coming to town on the weekend of June 6-8 at Mills Park. The festival will have many family oriented and child activities including authors of every genre, a book nook with readings by the actual authors, Kid Chef Eliana who will be doing cooking demonstrations, a giant bounce house and obstacle course, a free kids art tent, food, and much more.

Free books trailer at State and Hwy 50 Tuesday morning

A trailer full of books being given away for free to members of the general public. The books belonged to the recently-deceased owner of a local bookstore. Her brother, who said this was his tenth such load of books, has made her collection a gift to the community.

The Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey hosts special speakers during public meetings held on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 9am at the Silver Springs Community Center at 2945 Ft. Churchill Road. Each meeting also includes resource sharing, updates and discussion on issues of regional importance such as health and wellness, substance abuse prevention and recovery, education, workforce development, etc. On May 12, the featured speakers will be from the Tobacco Cessation Helpline.
