Carson City Fire Department has sent one engine staffed with 4 personnel to the Thomas Fire burning out of control in southern California, said Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon. Engines from East Fork, Central Lyon County and Tahoe Douglas are among 12 regional agencies that make up three strike teams that are sending personnel to the fire.

The Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team will continue prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks, weather permitting. Lake Valley, North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, California State Parks, California Tahoe Conservancy and the U.S. Forest Service will conduct prescribed fire operations in multiple areas around Lake Tahoe.

CARSON CITY — As the Nevada National Guard prepares to enter 2018, a look back on the Silver State’s past year reveals an unprecedented request for domestic response activations, not just in Nevada and northern California, but also places around the nation, ranging from Oregon to Puerto Rico.

After taking a break during the Thanksgiving holiday, the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team resume prescribed fire operations next week, beginning Monday, Nov. 27, 2017.

Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District christened Marine 24 earlier this month, giving Lake Tahoe its first year-round firefighting boat. At a cost of nearly $500,000, the vessel is able to fight fires from on board as well as piping water from the lake into water tenders.

UPDATE 2:20PM: A Red Flag Warning issued earlier this morning has been canceled due to arriving precipitation. A High Wind Warning remains in effect until 4 a.m. Thursday. A Flood Watch was issued Wednesday afternoon for the Carson City region, western Nevada and Lake Tahoe.

With valley gusts expected to top 70 mph today, the National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning and Red Flag Warning for the Sierra Front including Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County.

Time to fall back an hour. Daylight Saving Time ends at exactly at 2 a.m. this Sunday, Nov. 5. Turn the clocks back one hour if you live in most areas of the United States with the exception of Hawaii and much of Arizona which don't observe Daylight Saving Time.

UPDATE 3:41PM: A Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center dispatcher reports mutual assistance units for both Dayton area fires have been canceled. The incidents are under command of the Central Lyon County Fire Protection District.

Two brush fires were reported Thursday afternoon in the Dayton area of Lyon County, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center. Units responding to one of the fires have since been canceled.

It will be a pleasant start to the week with warming conditions and sunny skies for the Carson City area but changes are around the corner, according to the National Weather Service.

Smoke from northern California fires will linger around for the next couple days, with potential degrading air quality over the Carson City and Lake Tahoe regions, according to the National Weather Service.

A new Basic Life Services program is taking to the streets, Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon said, improving emergency medical services in the community and easing the stress currently placed on existing ambulance units.

With its new studio and offices now secured at the historic Adams House on Minnesota Street, Carson City Community Radio KNVC 95.1 may be ready for live broadcasts from the capital city sometime in November or December of this year, station management said Monday.

The Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team, which includes local, state and federal fire and land management agencies in the Lake Tahoe Basin, will begin their fall prescribed fire program in early October, weather permitting.

UPDATE 655PM: KOLO Channel 8 reports the northbound lane of U.S. 395 is open in Carson Valley as forward progress on four brush fires has stopped, East Fork Fire Protection District Capt. Terry Taylor said.

UPDATE 446PM: Forward progress on the three fires has stopped and no other fire department engines will be needed. There's a total of 1/2-acre that has burned with firefighters now mopping up the hotspots, said Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon.

Carson City Fire Department was called Wednesday afternoon to the area of Highway 50 East between Deer Run and Drako Way for a brush fire.

The fire danger level has been dropping due to recent moisture and predicted cooler temperatures.

The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s Carson Ranger District will lift its temporary shooting restriction on Sunday, Oct. 1.

CARSON CITY, Nev. - The Bureau of Land Management Carson City District Office, Fish & Wildlife Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the Nevada Division of Forestry in conjunction with Nevada State Parks announce the lifting of fire restrictions that have been in place since June 30, 2017. Restrictions will expire at 12:01 a.m., Saturday morning, Sept. 23, 2017.

Multiple lighting strikes Tuesday night have sent the Carson City Fire Department to brush fire calls off of Old Clear Creek Road and in the Goni Road and Duck Hill areas.

A minimum security inmate walked away from work detail Tuesday morning near the Department of Motor Vehicles in Carson City, according to the Nevada Department of Corrections.

Firefighters battling the Slinkard Fire that started by lightning a week ago west of Topaz have reached 74 percent containment as of Tuesday morning, according to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The fire has burned 9,093 acres.

Hello fellow anglers, I have been away for a couple weeks fishing in Oregon and northern California. Oh did we get into some nice fish, which I will give you the full story at the end of this report.

Achievements in preserving Lake Tahoe were celebrated Tuesday during the 21st Lake Tahoe Summit at Tallac Historic Site, but it was clear there is a lot more to do and the work will never be over.

Tuesday's Voltaire Fire in south Carson City off of Curry Street is contained at 135 acres and currently in mop-up phase with crews remaining to watch for hot spots, said Carson City Fire Department Chief Sean Slamon.

UPDATE: Lightning strikes on Tuesday afternoon may have contributed to several fires burning in the region, including the I-80 fire near Vista Boulevard in Sparks, the Micro Fire in central Lyon County southeast of Stagecoach, the Lyons Fire, which is in Douglas County but seen as far away as Dayton and Yerington. That fire as of early Wednesday morning was reported to be around 500 acres. It is located northeast of Sunrise Pass in the Pine Nut Mountains.

UPDATE 7:15PM: All evacuations have been lifted in the Voltaire Canyon Fire, said Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon. Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center estimates the fire to be around 150 acres.

UPDATE 6:29PM: Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon said conditions are looking better this evening, with the fire around 70 to 75 percent contained. There is not acreage estimate yet but it is likely around 100 acres and probably less than 200 acres, he said.
“Around 100 firefighters are on scene battling the blaze as well as two airplanes and two helicopters. We have released some resources now so they can go to other fires in the region.”
Evacuations remain in place for now in Voltaire Canyon and Carson Colony areas. The cause of the fire is believed to be a lightning strike.

UPDATE 6 PM: Carson City Fire Department Chief Sean Slamon addresses Tuesday's fire in a video here. The main concern now is the winds and terrain which is making containment difficult.

UPDATE 5:30PM: The evacuation at Galaxy Theater off of Curry Street has been lifted, according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

UPDATE 5:03PM: From Carson City Fire Department: Crews are staging to protect the homes and businesses west of Curry Street. For those outside of the immediate fire area, but nearby, you might consider what documents, medications, and valuables you would prioritize in an evacuation. There is currently 0 percent containment, winds are still erratic. Those evacuated from the Carson Colony are advised to go to the Carson Colony Gym.

UPDATE 4:53PM: From the Carson City Fire Department: No structures have been lost and efforts are concentrated on strucutre protection north of Koontz and west of Curry. Additional resources are continuting to arrive and the fire is estmated to be approximately 100 acres.

With this year’s wildfires already destroying more than 500 square miles of crucial winter range for antelope and mule deer herds in Elko County, the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners have endorsed several fire related emergency depredation hunts for both deer (doe) and antelope (horns shorter than ears).
