CARSON CITY — A 62-year-old Douglas County woman was sentenced by Second Judicial District Court Judge James Todd Russell to 30-96 months in prison, and ordered to pay full restitution of more than $264,000 in a case that involved stealing money from her elderly father.

I’m talking about the stewardship of our future. You know them, the oft-maligned young people in our midst. The ones we criticize for being cell phone dependent and social media addled, even as older adults are the fastest growing group of social media users.

So, technology is to blame? Not specifically, but it can be thrown into the stew.

MINDEN — After a competitive recruitment process was conducted, Douglas County has selected a Chief Financial Officer, Terri Willoughby for the permanent position of Chief Financial Officer and Comptroller of Douglas County.

DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA — Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval’s trade mission to Africa concluded on Friday in the coastal city of Durban, South Africa. Durban, also known as eThekwini Municipality, is home to the largest and busiest shipping terminal in sub-Saharan Africa.

After mercury was found in pet food in a 2016 research project at the University of Nevada, Reno, a new team is taking a closer look to quantify the concentration level of methylmercury, the toxic mercury compound that can have negative health impacts. Preliminary analyses of a few dog food samples showed methylmercury to be a significant percentage of the total mercury.

Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton got student loans to finance the education of their adult son (Andrew). In 2008 Mr. Hamilton was permanently disabled due to a back injury. In June of 2011 he asked to have the loans discharged (cancelled). In 2011 two lenders did cancel loans totaling $158,511.

CARSON CITY — Augenblick, Palaich and Associates, a consulting firm for the Nevada State Legislature, has been authorized and is conducting a school finance study on behalf of the state of Nevada that includes identifying the resources needed to serve at-risk students, English language learners and special education students throughout Nevada.

CARSON CITY — Governor Brian Sandoval announced Thursday he has appointed Paul Nicks as Acting Director of the Governor’s Finance Office. Nicks will replace Jim Wells, who is retiring from state service on July 13.

CARSON CITY — Gov. Brian Sandoval has appointed Dallas Haun, chairman of Nevada State Bank, to the Nevada Athletic Commission. Haun will serve the remainder of Sandra Douglass Morgan’s term.

MINDEN — Douglas County's Chief Financial Officer Vicki Moore resigned effective Tuesday, March 20, 2018. Moore tendered her resignation to County Manager, Larry Werner.

Greater Commercial Lending (GCL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Greater Nevada Credit Union (GNCU), has named Lisa Siesennop as its Senior Government Lending Relationship Manager.

Siesennop is responsible for providing oversight and direction of the government-guaranteed commercial lending department, developing business activity, specializing in USDA and SBA government loans, and maintaining and developing relationships with U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) offices, brokers, packagers, finance partners, and other economic development associates.

Mindy Lessard was married to Mr. Tomko in 2013 and they filed a joint tax return. However, two items of income were not reported on the return. There was $14,936 of cancellation of debt income that was his and $20,502 of distributions to him from his retirement plan. They were divorced in 2014. It seems they did not live in a community property state.
