Full 1/4 mile, outlaw style drag races will be held at RENO FERNLEY RACEWAY on August 12th and 13th. Outlaw Races hearken back to the early days of drag racing before sanctioning organizations and rules. It's "Run What You Brung" and open to all comers. This year’s annual event is called SMOKIN HOT DRAG RACES and expected to attract hundreds of competitors from Reno Nevada and adjacent markets.

NHP: Two Texas Motorists Killed in Lyon County Accident

Two motorists from Texas died in a vehicle accident this morning on Highway 50 Alternate Route eight miles east of Fernley, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.

Renee J. Upchurch, 53, and Esther Garza, 59, from San Diego, Texas, died as a result of injuries from the accident, said NHP Trooper Chuck Allen in a news release.

She has been a permanent resident of this state for the last 3.5 years, and prior to moving here from Greeley, Colo., she had visited us in Carson City a number of times. Those visits had been made by either train or bus and were always along the I-80 corridor from Wendover to Reno. That was all she had ever seen of the State of Nevada until this particular trip.

Healthy Communities Coalition: Collaboration Leads to Results

The Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey hosts special speakers during public meetings held on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 9am at the Silver Springs Community Center at 2945 Ft. Churchill Road. Each meeting also includes resource sharing, updates and discussion on issues of regional importance such as health and wellness, substance abuse prevention and recovery, education, workforce development, etc. On May 12, the featured speakers will be from the Tobacco Cessation Helpline.

Dayton community partners with Food Pantry; takes the Feinstein Challenge

When the Dayton Food Pantry issued an open invitation to partner with them for The Feinstein $1 Million Dollar Challenge to fight hunger, dozens of individuals, businesses, schools, nonprofits and clubs stepped up to help.

Carson High Visited by Army National Guard

Carson High School students and faculty were treated to an aviation display when the Nevada Army National Guard flew in its CH47 Chinook helicopter for a few hours this afternoon.

The Carson City stopover was part of a planned community awareness day at the high school, where students could see up close the transport helicopter and ask questions among Guard staff and recruiters and inquire about opportunities.

Lyon Schools Welcome New Gardens

Nearly 2,000 students are getting their hands dirty in school gardens, thanks to a USDA grant received by Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey, a private nonprofit. This season school gardens are being created in Dayton and Silver Springs, and next season they'll be created in Yerington and Fernley schools.

Sculptor Mischell Riley Donates Sculptures to Dayton School Garden

Dayton Intermediate School’s newly developing school garden will boast two large sculptures by internationally known sculptor Mischell Riley.

Riley, who is well known for work such as the 3-story high bronze lion at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, has donated two of her pieces to enhance the school’s garden landscape.

National Birth Defects Prevention Month highlights medication use during pregnancy

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey is joining over 350 members of the National Birth Defects Prevention Network to share the message that women of childbearing age should talk with a health care provider about which medications are safe to take while pregnant.

January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month, and this year’s campaign focuses on medication use before, during, and after pregnancy.

Nevada Highway Patrol makes 14 DUI arrests overnight

The Nevada Highway Patrol reports this morning that 14 alcohol-related arrests were made overnight, including two DUIs in Carson City.

In a 12-hour period between 7 p.m. Friday through 7 this morning, NHP troopers arrested the motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, said Trooper Chuck Allen.

The Dayton Food Pantry is run entirely by volunteers, and made possible because every part of the community- clubs, nonprofits, schools, county services, businesses, faith groups, etc - works together to stop hunger.

Red Ribbon Week Events Throughout Lyon and Storey Areas Promote Sober and Healthy Lives

Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the nation reaching millions of Americans near the last week of October every year. By wearing red ribbons and participating in community events, young people pledge to live sober and thus healthier, lives.

During this year’s Red Ribbon Week, Healthy Communities Coalition asks adults to respond to the growing epidemic of prescription drug misuse among youths by keeping medications locked up, and properly disposing of old medications.

Carson City can expect heavy rain with arrival of weather system

Carson City may get at least a quarter to a half inch of rain with a weather system that will make its way through the region beginning Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Reno and carsonweather.com.

Significant rainfall is expected with the system that is now making its way through the central and southern California coast and heading east.
