Column: Heroism happens every day

Heroic acts aren’t random or accidental by nature. They are deliberate. A person has to summon the courage to act bravely and heroically. Even in a split second.

Carson City Sheriff Deputy Carl Howell has proven this. Maybe one day, when a child looks up the explanation of “hero” in the encyclopedia, he’ll see Howell’s name next to it.

The truth about freedom

What is freedom, and what does it mean?

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines freedom as “the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action…the power or condition of acting without compulsion.”

What this means to the average American living in freedom every day is being able to choose what you say or do without government restraint or compulsion to say or do something else.

Referendum to Repeal Commerce Tax and Recall Senator(s)

The citizens of this great country started a Revolution in 1773 by throwing tea into the Boston Harbor to protest “Taxation without Representation”. A new Revolution has begun in the state of Nevada for the same reason.

On November 4, 2014, nearly 80% of Nevada’s voters said NO to Question 3, The Education Initiative, which was a margins tax based on a business’s gross receipts. Just 72 days later, during his State of the State address on January 15, 2015, Governor Brian Sandoval proposed a $7.3 Billion budget to be funded with roughly $1 Billion in new taxes.

Graham's Word: WNC Making Huge Mistake by Letting Athletics Walk

It will be a HUGE mistake by Western Nevada College if they allow the athletic programs to walk. Period. I have kept a low profile in this just mainly to sit back and observe what is going to happen. Now, I’m coming off the sidelines to express my opinion.

The college is doing this to save money and I do sympathize with them in that regard but, they are not looking at what the college AND the city will lose if the programs are gone. The loss of money to the city and college far outweighs the money that would be saved.

Science of climate change is convoluted!

Mr. Bush, we have some folks you can to talk to about climate change

By Mark Reynolds

It makes me nervous when someone who might become president of the United States says the science on climate change is “convoluted” and that it is “arrogant” to assert that humans are the primary cause of global warming.

That’s what happened recently when Jeb Bush, the still-undeclared presidential candidate, said the following at a campaign-style event in New Hampshire:
