The annual Western Nevada College Craft Fair will run Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the main lobby of the Bristlecone Building. Enjoy a chance to start holiday shopping between classes or on lunch break. Students, faculty and the public can browse the main lobby where more than 20 crafters will be selling a wide variety of handmade items.
This year's crafters will be selling everything from jewelry, gift baskets and candles to picture frames, artwork, candy and pies. The event is sponsored by the WNC classified employees, who use proceeds to help fund professional development activities.

Pianist Dr. Ron Williams performed the 50th Anniversary Recital of Toccatas and Sonatas Thursday night at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall.

The event was put on as a fundraiser for Carson City Symphony’s String for the School Program. More than fifty people attended, ranging from children to seniors.

The Recital featured songs written and originally played by J.S. Bach, D. Scarlatti, Paradisi, Haydn, Schumann, Beethoven and Ravel.

Williams was accompanied by his wife Genevieve Williams, who also assisted him while he was performing.

While support grows for extending the empowerment school program in Nevada, disagreements remain as to what causes the program to be successful, and whether the program would work without the $600 in additional funding per student that empowerment schools have been given in the past.

Whether they plan to enter the work force or continue on with their education, the 451 Western Nevada College graduates walked away Monday and Tuesday with one certainty: It's up to them to use their education to push ahead in one of the most trying economic times in Nevada's history.

With the state's 13.7 percent unemployment rate for April, it may be "tough out there" to find a job, but the education the graduates earned at WNC is top-notch and will take them far if they apply themselves and are patient, College President Carol Lucey told the class Tuesday night.

A proposal by Regent Mark Alden for cutting the pay of university employees to deal with the education budget cuts mandated by the legislature will be discussed during the April 16 meeting of the Board of Regents.

Last week, the Nevada Board of Regents held a meeting in what marks the beginning of nine weeks of discussion on how to further reduce their budgets to adjust for the 6.9 percent cut in funding agreed upon by Nevada Legislators during the special session in February.

The State Senate and Assembly have this week considered cuts to education as they seek ways to close Nevada’s $881 million budget gap at the legislative special session.
