Art on the Porch Set for Friday to launch Carson City Jazz and Beyond Festival

Carson City, Nevada — To help launch the annual citywide Jazz & Beyond Festival, Capital City Arts Initiative will host artists selling their art at the Bliss Mansion prior to the 6:30 p.m. main concert. The art sale will take place Friday, August 5 from 4-6:30 p.m. on the porch, 608 Elizabeth Street, Carson City. The free events include art for sale, music, food, and a lovely home and garden to tour. The public is cordially invited.
“Mi Casa es Mi Casa” honors Nevada and Guatemala traditions in OXS Gallery’s Favela exhibit

“Mi Casa es Mi Casa” means my home is my home. In the Nevada Arts Council’s latest OXS Gallery exhibit, Justin Favela looks at the idea of “home.” A native Nevadan, Favela is proud to be from the Battle Born State and also pays homage to his Guatemalan maternal grandmother by recreating objects found in her home. Objects that have been part of the domestic landscape for his entire life have helped form his identity, and in the exhibition, represent the love he has for his grandmother and her home.
Nevada Arts Council grants nearly $50,000 in new artist fellowships

The Nevada Arts Council has awarded nearly $50,000 in grants to 14 Nevada artists selected to receive FY17 Artist Fellowships, executive director Susan Boskoff announced today. From Las Vegas, Reno and Minden, their work includes music, poetry, choreography fiction and non-fiction. In addition, artist Stephan Caplan received a $6,955 grant in the Fellowship Project category for new work.

Carson City residents Matthew Bartak and Teak Dopf have got inertia down to a science. They haven't stopped moving since the first time they touched a set of wheels.
They've ridden bikes, skateboards, scooters and skates. They loved them all so much that the two friends became partners in a business two years ago that took their passion for riding to another level.

March 31, 2015 - 7:00pm On Tuesday, March 31, 2015, the Capital City Arts Initiative will present a talk by curator JoAnne Northrup. Her illustrated talk, Bringing the World to Northern Nevada is the next in CCAI’s Nevada Neighbors series. The talk will take place at 7pm at the BRIC, 108 E Proctor St, Carson City.
There will be an informal reception for Ms. Northrup preceding the event; the doors open at 6:15pm. The presentation and reception are free, and the public is cordially invited.
Carson City Airport Open House

June 20, 2015 - 8:00am The Carson City Airport Open House will be held on June 20, 2015. Gates open at 8AM and will close at 4PM. The Open House is free to the public and we will have on display private and military aircraft, airplane rides, tethered balloon rides, RC Airplane exhibitions, and formation flights, Robotics exhibitions, drone zone, the Challenger Learning Center as well as fun and food for all ages.
UNR professor's Monster Fish work featured in National Geographic exhibit

A new National Geographic Museum exhibition, Monster Fish: In Search of the Last River Giants, features the work of the University of Nevada, Reno’s research professor and host of the television show Monster Fish, Zeb Hogan. It opens March 26 at National Geographic’s Washington, D.C. headquarters and runs through Oct. 12, 2015.
Capital City Arts Initiative Awarded Warhol Foundation Grant

After learning earlier this month that it would receive a National Endowment of the Arts grant, the Capital City Arts Initiative has more good news that came before the end of 2014. It has received a $50,000 grant from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
The Foundation awarded the organization the grant for two years of program support through 2016.
Courthouse Gallery in Carson City, St. Mary's in Virginia City make list of must-see Nevada art stops

Capital City Arts Initiative Courthouse Gallery in Carson City and St. Mary's Art and Retreat Center in Virginia City are among 10 "unmissable" Nevada spots for art lovers, according to the website TheCultureTrip.com.
In announcing its list the website notes Nevada is dotted with many places for art lovers to explore, including traditional galleries to more unique spaces. From Reno to Elko the state boasts a wide range of art from a host of talented individuals, including locals and international artists.
Capital City Arts Initiative Awarded National Endowment for the Arts Grant

National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu announced Tuesday that the Capital City Arts Initiative is one of 919 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant.
CCAI is recommended for a $10,000 grant to support an exhibition by artist Katie Lewis in the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. Ms. Lewis’ show will open in September 2015.
