(Carson City, NV) -- The Second Annual Building a Stronger Nevada Economic Development Conference will explore the ideas, programs and products that are defining the new Nevada economy from Sept. 20-22, 2016 at the at the University of Nevada, Reno's Joe Crowley Student Union.

The multi-track conference is presented by the Western Nevada Development District, University of Nevada, Reno College of Business, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Center for Business & Economic Research, USDA Rural Development and Nevada Industry Excellence.

On Tuesday night at the annual Jalé and Warren Trepp Business Plan Competition, three teams of young entrepreneurs studying at Sierra Nevada College competed for $6,000 in cash prizes.

This event is one of the most exciting celebrations of the academic year at SNC Tahoe. After each team presented twenty-minute oral presentations to a panel of live, external judges and a public audience of more than 100 people, the room waited in anticipation for the announcement of the winners.

Each year, the Nevada controller’s financial reports have included an “economic outlook” section, as have reports by many government agencies and business, academic and journalistic entities. Nearly all such assessments are based on business-cycle analyses focused on economic sectors and geographic regions in the short and intermediate terms.

The University of Nevada, Reno is proud to announce that it has again been selected as a partner with the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders. This will be the second year the University will host 25 of Africa’s brightest emerging business and entrepreneurship leaders. In mid-June, fellowship participants will begin their six-week academic and leadership institute sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.

Paul Klemm is a true success story. At 18 years old, he has already figured out that hard work, self-discipline and problem solving are the keys to controlling his life. How does one so young know so much about success?

For a high school student to skip their lunch break, there's got to be a pretty significant reason behind it. For Carson High School, the cause of so many empty cafeteria seats on an otherwise normal school day was nothing short of big deal.

Helping support and inspire the growing number of students in the entrepreneurship minor program is the Ozmen Center for Entrepreneurship. Since opening its doors in the University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Business in September 2014, the Ozmen Center has built an interdisciplinary program spanning across campus and out into the community.

“We teach a different way of thinking,” Chris Howard, Ozmen Center for Entrepreneurship director, said. “I describe it as diagonal thinking. We take the knowledge students learn in class and apply it to get different and desired results.”

Every year it seems more and more people are looking into starting their own ventures, escaping from the corporate mindset and driving themselves to do more, be more—and let's not forget—earn more. Hello Carson City! It’s great to be back!

Following WNC’s graduation in May, I returned to my hometown of Haines, Alaska. Haines is a small town in southeast Alaska, 90 miles north of Juneau. It is home to 1,713 people year round (1,714 when I’m in town) and swells to 5,000 plus in the summer.

Perhaps the single most important and consequential decision you will make as an entrepreneur is who you hire to help you build your business. Studies have found that the first three people a start-up hires set the tone, culture, precedent and path to success more than the next ten hires.

As with excellent business plan writing, excellent investor pitching requires some fundamental aspects but it also requires a bit of flare and compelling allure.

The vision for the Carson City School District states that “our community empowers tomorrow’s Innovators, Leaders and Thinkers.” The District’s use of the phrase “our community” is intentional, as we recognize that educating our children is a collaborative effort and that the prescribed core curriculum is only a part of what students need to know and be able to do. In Carson City, education truly is a collaborative endeavor.

The University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Business announced this year’s winner of the Sontag Entrepreneurship Competition Monday, March 9. Nevada Dynamics, a hardware and software safety solution for unmanned autonomous systems, was the winner of the $50,000 award given each year to the student team who presents the best business plan.

“Sontag is one of the largest awards for a student business competition that exists at a single American university,” College of Business Dean Greg Mosier said.
