Column: What if I could buy the Ormsby House?

A couple of times in the movie "It's a Wonderful Life," main character George Bailey closes his eyes, raises his right hand, and says "I wish I had a million dollars!" while pressing the lever of a lighter contraption on Mr. Gower's drug store counter.

Buying the Ormsby House wasn't on George Bailey's wish list. Then again, he'd need at least 10 times more if it was.

WNC Professor Howarth to address future of robots in the workplace and in our lives

Event Date:
April 25, 2017 - 11:15am

With all the emphasis on teaching robotics in the schools, one wonders what will become of those of us who are less than science or mathematically gifted.

Robots already permeate our lives at almost every turn and each day brings new revelations about how robots are taking over the once hum-drum jobs humans no longer wish to perform — or manufacturers no longer wish to pay humans the salaries and benefits it takes to manufacture a widget.

Partnership Carson City column: Green is the New Color of Greed in Nevada

“When everyone is looking for gold, it’s good to be in the pick and shovel business.” — Mark Twain

The entrepreneur-turned-humorist ought to know. Even though Samuel Clemens failed miserably at both mining and logging ventures in Nevada, he gave getting rich his best shot. Twain well understood the appetite Americans have for money — and how far those who want a slice of the supply chain pie are willing to go in order to get it.
It’s the same ambitious impulse a recent Seattle Business article identified when it said, “Marijuana entrepreneurs are lining up to cash in.”

Elon Musk is building a massive Tesla Gigafactory that's expected to be completed in 2020. When finished, it'll be the world's second-largest building by volume — three times the size of New York's Central Park.
While there have been drone videos of the factory's exterior, photographers haven't been allowed inside the Gigafactory.

Tesla's response to angst over lithium deal pleases Nevada lawmakers

After lawmakers expressed frustration that Tesla, the recipient of a $1.3 billion tax incentive that helped bring its battery factory to the state, was planning to source an important metal for its batteries from a northern Mexico mine rather than from Nevada deposits, the company’s CEO Elon Musk tweeted that it was “definitely” pursuing sources of lithium in Nevada.

Nevada wins competition for Tesla Motors gigafactory

Tesla Motors has officially chosen Nevada as the location to build a $5 billion battery plant for its electric vehicle batteries.

Nevada strikes $1.25 billion tax break deal with Tesla

The tax incentive package assembled by Gov. Brian Sandoval to woo Tesla's gigafactory is unprecedented in size and scope for the state of Nevada and is one of the largest in the country.

The overall value to Tesla is estimated to be $1.25 billion over 20 years — a figure that is more than double the $500 million package CEO Elon Musk said would be required to draw the company. If the deal is approved by the Nevada Legislature, Tesla will operate in the state essentially tax free for 10 years.

Tesla has been in negotiation for months with four other states including California, Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. CEO Elon Musk announced in spring that two sites would start to be constructed before a final winner was declared.

In July, Tesla broke ground at the Reno Tahoe Industrial Center, but the company did not publicly commit to building in Nevada. The Silver State ultimately won the battle for the major economic development.
