Carson’s Got Talent, an evening extravaganza of regional talent, is holding auditions for the April show this Sunday, Feb. 11 at Forever Dance, 1851 S. Roop Street in Carson City. Check-in is at 9 a.m. Auditions begin at 10 a.m.

CARSON CITY — Nevada Department of Business and Industry Director C.J. Manthe announced that the Nevada Division of Insurance has been named the Department’s 2017 Agency of the Year.

The Mortimer and Mimi Levitt Foundation on Tuesday named Carson City as one of 15 small to mid-sized towns and cities across America to win a Levitt AMP Grant Award of $25,000 in matching funds to present a free concert series at the Minnesota Street Stage. The Brewery Arts Center has been a recipient of the grant for the third straight year.

Although it has been serving customers since June, The Union Carson opened with little fan-fare until Thursday night when a ribbon-cutting and grand opening bash was held at 302 North Carson Street as a fundraising benefit for the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada and The Greenhouse Project.

The Union, Carson City’s newest downtown eatery, tap house and coffee purveyor, is throwing a ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening party on Thursday, Oct. 12, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at 302 N. Carson Street.

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Charles Mann, agriscience educator at Carson High School, recently attended an 8-day professional development institute at the University of Nevada, Reno to teach the Introduction to Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE) course in the CHS Career and Technical Education agriculture program during this school year.

Adapting to a very snowy winter in the northern Sierra Nevada, Epic Rides announced Tuesday a modified course for the Capitol 35 and Capitol 50 events for the 2nd Annual Carson City Off-Road mountain bike festival June 16-18. The Capitol 15 will be unchanged from last year.

(Reno, Nev.) – Twenty-year philanthropy and social responsibility professional, Chrissy Menicucci, has been named the new National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges’ (NCJFCJ) director of development.

Carson City-based Shaheen Beauchamp Builders LLC has been nominated to receive the Nevada Excellence in Design awards by the Nevada Chapter of the American Institute of Architects for their work on renovations of the Mutual of Omaha Bank in Carson City in 2013 and 777 Center in midtown Reno this year.

On Tuesday night at the annual Jalé and Warren Trepp Business Plan Competition, three teams of young entrepreneurs studying at Sierra Nevada College competed for $6,000 in cash prizes.

I’m fairly tolerant of most insects and spiders. I try to move them outside if I find them in the house rather than kill them. However, I do kill black widow spiders. It seems as if this was a banner year for black widows. I never used to find them in the house, only in the detached garage. Lately, I have found quite a few indoors.

Two Major League Baseball franchises, including the league's most decorated team, have recently armed themselves with past Western Nevada College pitchers.

The New York Yankees, winners of 27 World Series titles, signed former Wildcat pitcher Cody Hamlin to a free-agent contract on June 23. More recently, the Milwaukee Brewers signed former WNC relief pitcher Evan Parker, and have not yet come to terms with Conor Harber, who starred for the Wildcats on the mound and in the outfield during the 2013-14 seasons.

The University of Oregon right-hander was selected in the 16th round by the Milwaukee Brewers on the final day of the draft Wednesday, marking the third straight year that the former Wildcat pitcher and outfielder has been selected.

WNC freshman outfielder DJ Peters was selected for the second time in as many years. The Texas Rangers took Peters in the 36th round. Peters was also chosen a year ago in the 36th round by the Chicago Cubs.

Immunize Nevada shared an important statistic Thursday from the Nevada State Division of Public and Behavioral Health: According to data from Nevada WebIZ, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) and MMR-V (measles, mumps, rubella, varicella) vaccination coverage rates jumped 23 percent in the first quarter of 2015, compared to the same period in 2014.

Officials attribute the increase, at least in part, to the high-profile measles outbreak that was linked to Disneyland, along with reported cases in Nevada and many other states between December 28, 2014 through April 24 of this year.

Litter. Dog poop. Unsafe fires. Bear safety. These are just some of the issues impacting our region. Wednesday, the Lake Tahoe Outreach Committee unveiled the Take Care campaign to help reduce these impacts and promote a more responsible use of our great outdoors.

The campaign was designed for use in outreach efforts by public agencies, private businesses and nonprofit organizations in the region. Aimed at residents and visitors, the campaign is a series of reminders that poke fun at the mistakes we all make when we’re not paying attention.

Backers of a measure to hike Nevada’s minimum wage to $15 an hour said Wednesday the move would elevate workers out of poverty and reduce demands for public assistance, while critics countered it would shrink the availability of entry-level jobs and harm the economy....

The second in the Carson City Chamber’s Meet the Artist series will take place this Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Artisan Showcase located at 1900 S. Carson Street between 2-4 pm.

Featured artist will be Linda Ritter, owner of Pinyon Pottery, who will be using her portable potter’s wheel to demonstrate how she turns a lump of clay into a functional art piece. She will reveal how she came to love working with clay over the past year, embarking on her second career after retiring from government after 30 years of service.
