What a week it was Carson City, and it isn't even over yet. Heading into Friday, May 3, 2019, we're looking at continued sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70s. There's a host of activities Friday and, looking ahead, a bevy of fun Saturday including a Mother's Day craft fair at the Carson City Community Center, a Star Wars themed bicycle safety day, a wine, cheese and dessert ride aboard the V&T, an early opening of the downtown farmer's market, the May Downtown Carson City Wine Walk, a memorial walk, presentations, comedy, live music and more. Creativity explored through Artist in Residence program at Carson City's Fritsch Elementary

CARSON CITY — For more than 7 years, students at Fritsch Elementary School have been provided opportunities to elaborate and expound upon their artistic abilities. With the assistance of the school’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) the Artist in Residence program has brought in local artists from the community to teach students a variety of art mediums in classes.

'Star Wars' themed bicycle event Saturday to benefit Carson City Schools Foundation

CARSON CITY — Set for Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, at Fritsch Elementary School, the Bicycle Fun & Safety Day will benefit the Carson City Schools Foundation. Sponsored by Carson Tahoe Health and hosted by the Carson City School District, the Nevada Department of Transportation, Safe Routes to School, local bike clubs and shops, the inaugural event will serve as a proving ground to acquaint experienced and less experienced bike riders with their eco-friendly transport mechanisms.

Senator Square: Carson High School's Carneta yearbook staff have successful year

As the school year comes to an end, the 2018-2019 Carneta yearbook staff can finally slow down and take a breath. At the end of the week before Spring Break, at 8:30 p.m., the final pages were submitted, and the book was officially finished. After months of interviewing, photographing, and editing, the book is currently being printed by Walsworth Publishing Co., in Marceline, Kansas.

Headed into Saturday, April 27, 2019 we're looking at another picture-perfect spring weather day and cool overnight temperatures. There's lots of activities ahead, including a colorful fun run at Mills Park, a free paper and document recycling event hosted by Debug Computer, a prescription drug roundup, the Silver State's own celebration of the Aloha State, a Carson High School speech team fundraiser at Flavors of India, art showings and sales and a fundraiser at Flat Earth Pizza for a wonderful Carson City woman who is in the throes of cancer. Carson City School District Honors Educators and Employees of the Year

CARSON CITY — Nicolas Jacques, music teacher at Carson Middle School, was honored last night as the Carson City School District’s Educator of the Year. Additionally, James “Jim” Pike, special needs school bus driver for transportation, was recognized as the Education Support Professional (ESP) Employee of the Year for the district.

Carson City's local Pokemon Go! club catches trash at Litter Mob clean up

Carson City's Pokemon Go! club gave back to the community on Monday by meeting up for a trash cleanup, while also catching some Pokemon.

Color Fun Run coming Saturday to Mills Park in Carson City

The students of Mark Twain Elementary School will host their fourth annual community-wide “My School Color Run” Saturday, April 27, 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Mills Park in Carson City.

Headed into Thursday, April 11, 2019 we welcome Carson City to another day where weather forecasters say there's a chance of rain and maybe even a few snow showers mixed in. Beyond the weather we're looking at a blockbuster day and night filled will activities throughout town. From library presentations, a TV show casting call at the Carson Nugget, an afternoon hike, to a train history presentation, a book signing at the Brewery Arts Center, a CHS theater performance and the Carson City movie screening premier of "The Mustang" filmed at the historic Nevada State Prison, there's something for everyone. Schools in Dayton go on voluntary lockdown after report of man in park near school with a rifle

UPDATE 1:05PM: According to Lyon County Sheriff's Office Lt. Abel Ortiz, the man who was believed to be carrying a rifle, was instead carrying a pellet gun and had been shooting squirrels at a park near the elementary school. Lt. Ortiz said the man knew that he had made a mistake and was embarrassed for creating the situation. The lieutenant added that the schools did what they were supposed to and there was no threat.

UPDATE 12:35PM: Here's the latest from the Lyon County School District via Facebook. "The precautionary Lock-In at all three Dayton area schools were lifted as of 12:13 p.m. As a result of the prompt actions of law enforcement, school operations have proceeded as normal with all students and staff safe and secure."

Schools in the Dayton area went on voluntary lockdown late Wednesday morning after a report of someone driving around the Dayton High School campus in a pickup with a rifle in the truck, Lyon County Manager Jeff Page said. The voluntary lockdown was a precaution, said Page who contacted Lyon County sheriff's office officials.

Carson City HOSA students compete in state competition, take home 6 chapter awards

CARSON CITY — A total of 93 Career and Technical Education (CTE) and HOSA (Future Health Professionals) students competed in the Nevada State Leadership Conference held at the Rio in Las Vegas March 18-20.

There were a total of 74 students from Carson High School (CHS), 6 from Pioneer High School (PHS) and 13 from Carson Middle School (CMS). More than 1,000 students from across the state of Nevada competed in more than 40 medical competition events.

My Nevada story began with a family trip through the Silver State

When I was about 12 years old, my family took a trip down along the east side of the Sierra Nevada on our way to Lake Havasu, California, during Spring Break 1986.

All six of us piled into the family Ford Econoline Trail Wagon, brand new at the time, and set out to break in the new set of wheels.

Meet at Fremont Elementary School, 1511 Firebox Road in Carson City, in the south parking lot next to the Linear Ditch Trail.

Ride will normally consist of two loops which are 10-15 miles long each. The ride pace will vary depending on rider level, but will usually be about a 12-16 mph pace. This is a "no drop" ride so no one is left behind.

All riders must have a bicycle in safe working condition, a helmet, and closed toed shoes.
