Snow survey: California snowpack at 136 percent of normal, drought concerns remain

This season's snow in the Sierra and the forecast for a continued wet El Niño pattern shows promise but there's still a long way to go in order to make a dent in the four-year drought, said California water officials Wednesday at this winter's first manual snow survey at Echo Summit, which snowed a snow depth of 54.7 inches, 16.3 inches of water content and 136 percent of average.

New Drought Report Could be Road Map for Nevada Water Policy

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - A panel of water expertsthat spent almost a year analyzing Nevada's drought has issued recommendations that could shape Gov. Brian Sandoval's policy agenda in the coming year.

Habitat Division biologist Clint Garrett was recently named the winner of the Ted C. Frantz Employee of the Year award for the Nevada Department of Wildlife.

The honor is to recognize significant achievements during the previous year toward the mission of the agency or the conservation, management, enhancement of wildlife in Nevada that are clearly above and beyond his or her normal duties. While “above and beyond” is in the description of the award, it doesn’t seem to cover what Garrett was able to accomplish.

Forecasters update coming El Nino: 95 percent likely, will weaken through spring 2016

A U.S. government weather forecaster on Thursday said El Nino conditions would gradually weaken through the northern hemisphere spring after peaking in late fall or early winter.

The National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center said the likelihood that El Nino conditions would persist through the northern hemisphere winter was about 95 percent, up from a more than 90 percent chance in last month's forecast.
