Fernley Community Foundation celebrates progress with Polaris grant, new senior center opening

The Fernley Community Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to improving Fernley’s community facilities for the city’s residents, is commemorating the progress of the Fernley Community Campus project. The FCF announced the progress and acknowledge key players at a Media Day on Friday, December 18 outside of the William N. Pennington Fernley Complex.

Former rural development official to speak at Monday's Democratic tele-luncheon

Clint Koble, Executive Director of the Department of Agriculture's Nevada Rural Development Council in the Obama administration, will be the featured speaker at next Monday's Democratic tele-luncheon. The topic of his presentation will be “Rebuilding Rural America” — a set of policy proposals he developed based on a lifetime in public life and on his own experience as a product of rural America, having been born and raised on a farm in North Dakota.

Two Carson City teachers earn National Board Certification

The Carson City School District is celebrating two new National Board Certified Teachers from the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. The teachers to be recognized earning certification are Patricia Ababio, Graphic Arts teacher in the Career and Technical Education program at Carson High School, and Rhonda Holloway, English teacher at Carson Middle School.

Carson City commission OKs permit for proposed 5-story, 253-unit apartment complex

The Carson City Planning Commission has approved a request for a Special Use Permit to build a 253-unit apartment project known as the Stewart Street Apartments.

The project required a special use permit due to the location being within the Downtown Mixed-Use zoning district.

Nevada board OKs 11 new companies; abatements will generate $90M in new tax revenue, create nearly 2,000 jobs

The Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development Board of Directors on Wednesday approved abatements for 11 companies that it says will generate $90,207,019 in tax revenue and create 1,991 jobs over the next 10 years. Of the 11 companies, two are based in Lyon County and six in Washoe County.

COVID-19 Task Force takes action on high transmission risk counties such as Carson City, Lyon and more

The Nevada COVID-19 Mitigation and Management Task Force met with nine counties flagged for having an elevated risk of transmission of COVID-19.

Carson City, Clark, Elko, Humboldt, Lincoln, Lyon, Nye and Washoe counties’ plans were previously approved by the Task Force.

Carson City Library receives grant to bring bionics learning to middle school students in 2021

Reimagining learning, the Carson City Library is bringing robotics technology and engineering to Carson City middle school students in 2021. Utilizing analog and digital learning, students will build components of a bionic fish, elephant, and chameleon over the 3-day Bionics Camps designed to encourage STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) related career exploration and development.

New self-check kiosks installed at the Carson City Library

The Carson City Library is not one to shy away from innovation and integrating technology. The latest, are four self-check kiosks installed last week designed to allow for hands-free or limited touch operation to help to curb the number of touches taking place, especially as pandemic concerns continue and the focus remains on keeping the community safe.
