Late spring rain proves good news for Nevada chukar hunters

April showers may bring May flowers, but May showers apparently saved this year’s chukar hunting season. This year’s Nevada Chukar Hunting Forecast, an annual report put out by the Nevada Department of Wildlife that uses data from aerial surveys that take place across 13 different survey plots, was recently released.

Nevada wildlife wardens euthanize second Lake Tahoe black bear this week

For the second time this week and fifth time this year a black bear was euthanized because it was seen as a threat to public safety, the Nevada Department of Wildlife said Friday.
A yearling female bear, about 18 months of age, was trapped during the evening hours between Thursday night and Friday morning in the Kingsbury area of Douglas County, located on Lake Tahoe’s south shore.

152nd Airlift Wing round up geese in Reno, Carson City

Members of the 152nd Airlift Wing participated in the 30th annual Canadian goose roundup June 4 with the Nevada Department of Wildlife and the United States Department of Agriculture.

The event helped relocate geese away from aircraft in the Reno-Tahoe region to a safer location at the Mason Valley Wildlife Management area in Yerington.

The group of volunteers started at Silver Oaks Golf Course in Carson City early in the morning. They collected around 140 geese there before moving on.

Museum program features the story of Nevada bats August 27

Protecting bat habitat across Nevada, and why doing so is good for all, is the topic of the Nevada State Museum, Carson City’s August program from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 27 presented by Jenni Jeffers.

Nevada is home to 23 species of bats. Its 250,000 abandoned mines have become important artificial roost sites for a large portion of our bat population for at least a part of their life. Jeffers will share how important bat habitat is protected and show photos of the species using these abandoned mines.

Rabid bat confirmed in Washoe County; pet owners urged to maintain rabies vaccinations

The Nevada Department of Agriculture says it has tested positive for the first laboratory-confirmed rabid bat found in Washoe County. Bat rabies is endemic throughout Nevada. The agency's Animal Disease Laboratory notes that between six and 20 bats annually test positive for rabies, usually between the months of May and October. However, in recent years positive bats have been confirmed as early as February.
