Cruise Night

There is quite a bit to look forward to today, not to mention this coming weekend. The Rockabilly Riot roars into town and sets up shop at Mills Park for a whole weekend of vintage rat-rods and rock-n-roll. You’ll find the Extreme Motor Officers Challenge in the park, too, so expect it to be noisy. The Pony Express rides again, as it does every year, and retraces its historic route. Keep an eye out this evening for the rider heading east. Enjoy some blues, funk and rock courtesy of the Mylo McCormick Project at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park as part of their annual summer music series.

The Northern Nevada Dream Center, a faith-based charitable organization serving the area's most needy residents, has moved to a new location at 3579 U.S. Highway 50 East, Suite 211, in the iStorage commercial center.

She’s a grand ole flag, and there will be two ceremonies to recognize the stars and stripes in Carson City today. At 10 a.m. you can join the Nevada National Guard at the Veterans Memorial on the Capitol Grounds for presentation of the colors, speakers, and even cake for the US Army’s anniversary. You’ll find the Elks Club honoring our flag at 3 p.m. The public are invited to both events. The Army isn’t the only birthday you’ll find today; Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery celebrates its seventh year with an artist reception and new work from Denise Jenkins.

School let out and summer wasted no time getting to the fun stuff. This weekend will bring the Revival Car Show and the annual Capital City Brewfest downtown, in addition to a wine walk at the Carson Mall and the Fair/Rendezvous at Mills Park. Today, you can enjoy some live music at Living the Good Life or Bella Vita Bistro, get your karaoke fix at Whiskey Tavern, or head to the Carson Mall for their monthly cruise night.

School is out in Carson City and the summer wasted no time in getting started with the fun stuff. Head down to Mills Park sometime this weekend to enjoy the Nevada State Fair, Rendezvous and Carnival. Carson Valley Days is an annual tradition for those who live in the Minden/Gardnerville area. Lampe Park will be hopping with live music, activities, and another carnival. You’ve probably noticed the very large tent erected by the Carson Mall. The Ramos Bros. Circus has come to town, and will be offering performances daily for the next 10 days. Read on, this is just the beginning.

Don’t let the weather fool you. Once we get past the gloomy skies of today, we’re on track for a beautiful Memorial Day weekend. The inaugural Rockin’ Rib Fest at Fandango begins this afternoon and runs until Monday, so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to sample some grilled bbq. The Proscenium Players begin their run of ‘The Hit’ in the Brewery Arts Center’s Black Box Theater; break a leg. Lend a hand to our various Veterans’ organizations this afternoon as they plant flags on the graves of those who served in the Lone Mountain Cemetery: many hands make light work.

I may be dating myself, but I’ve got John Denver’s voice stuck in my head singing ‘Plant a tree for your tomorrow.’ It’s Arbor Day, so Mayor Bob Crowell will be doing just that, planting a tree in Mills Park. The kids of Wild Horse Children’s Theater continue their successful run of Junie B. Jones at the Brewery Arts Center - it’s their final weekend, so don’t miss out. Maddie’s Adoption Days is a state-wide event trying to find forever homes for dogs and cats; you’ll find several local shelters and rescues participating in the free adoption days.

Summer nights are made to be enjoyed. Grab the kids, a blanket and picnic, and head to the park nearest you. Mills Park in Carson City features its first ever ‘Movie in the Park’ tonight with a showing of ‘Sing’. Gardnerville’s last of the season movie is Disney’s ‘Moana.’ Dancing shoes are recommended, but not required, for this week’s outdoor concert in McFadden Plaza: Musicole begins at 7:30 p.m. Get there early to see the amazing talent in 'We Rock Kidz' on the stage in Comma Coffee's Courtyard. There are some things that one never thinks they will see in their lifetime. I must admit, the Carson City Freeway was one of those things. But lo and behold, the new 580 extension opened its last leg to traffic yesterday. The hot summer temperatures continue, so seek indoor entertainment during the day and keep cool.

Happy Thursday, Carson City. Help move the workweek along by doing something fun. You’ll always find the boys of J and M Productions running the karaoke show at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar. Living the Good Life has music every night Tuesday through Saturday, and tonight it is Dougie L’s turn to entertain. The Café at Adele’s is always a good choice for date night, but when they also have music on their veranda, you’ve got all the ingredients for a memorable night.

Today’s the day. Archie, the Reno Aces mascot, has been entrusted to once again oversee the grand opening of the Carson City Fair at Fuji Park. The soft opening of the accompanying carnival begins at 6 p.m. with one dollar rides. It’s Miss Scarlet with the lead pipe in the Observatory as the Carson City Library hosts a super-sized game of Clue for teens. Families will enjoy Beauty and the Beast, complete with a craft, if they sign up for the Library’s movie night. I’m sending good thoughts to those in the California fire zones: with as bad as the smoke is here, I can only imagine how bad their eyes burn. Free ice cream and a concert featuring the Capital City Community Band can be found tonight at the First United Methodist Church on King Street. You’ll find free pool, a nice beer selection, and great drinks at Remedy’s Bar on Williams Street tonight. Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery celebrates the paper and book sculptures of mother-daughter team, My Thousand Words, at a meet and greet reception tonight. The sun keeps shining and the summer fun keeps on coming. Great live music tonight can be found on the Veranda at Adele’s, at Living the Good Life, on the stage at Sassafras, in the Glen Eagles Lounge, and at Battle Born Harley Davidson's Bike Night. The Carson Library starts the day with story time for the little ones, and ends with an exciting science presentation featuring Fire and Ice. Learn a little about Nevada with photographer Ernie Winters at the Gold Hill Hotel. He’ll take you back in time with color photographs of Virginia City in the 50s.

Whether you are looking for a night on the town with friends or something for the whole family, Carson City has got you covered. The Friday night concerts in the McFadden Plaza will get everyone movin' and groovin' - especially when a band like Mojo Green hits the stage. Kids will love the Dive-in Movie night at the Carson Aquatic Center. Moana will be playing on their big, new LED screen. The Trippin' King Snakes kick off the Summer Concert Series at Living the Good Life, followed by a DJ into the wee hours of the morning. Keep reading and prepare to have a great day.

And just like that, it’s almost the weekend. Karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar takes over their patio- a perfect place to enjoy a cocktail and sing a little song. Enjoy live music, a good drink and yummy food at Living the Good Life. Show off your chrome at the Silver Dollar Cruise Night – this week you meet up at the Courtyard by Marriot next to the Casino Fandango. If you love your chopper, then Bike Night at Battle Born Harley Davidson is your best bet to get the party started.

Sunny days are here again, and Carson City gives you plenty of ways to enjoy it. It’s the boys in blue versus the fire fighters in today’s Battle of the Badge Blood Drive. Bikers won’t want to miss the weekly party at Battle Born Harley with house band, the Smoken Rabbits; all vehicles are welcome to join in the fun and get some grub from the Rollin Pizza Pie food truck. The whole family will enjoy tonight’s Twilight Concert with the Sextones at the Dangberg Home Historic Ranch. Learn about Virginia City ghosts with authors Sandie LaNae and Arlene Laferry at the haunted Gold Hill Hotel.

The weekends seem to start earlier in summertime. Head down to Mills Park for the first of the rat-rods rolling in for this weekend’s Rockabilly Riot and to catch the motorcycle cops running some practice loops around the obstacle course. Seniors can head to the Community Center for vouchers good at the Third and Curry Farmers Market, residency and income restrictions apply. Join Mo’z Motley Blues on the lawn of the Dangberg Home Historic Ranch for a summer twilight concert – bring a chair or blanket, I suggest some bug spray and a picnic, as well.

Can you feel the excitement in the air?

Beware, or you'll suffer from fun stuff overload. The State Fair and Rendezvous continues at Mills Park, and now you can head into the Pavilion and get your car or bike registered for the Show and Shine. Shiny cars are also welcome at the Carson Cruise - Meet and Greet's Summer Cruise Night: start out at Bully's Sports Bar and you'll convoy down to McFadden Plaza for the Fridays at the Fox Concert Series Kick-off. Shane Dwight takes the stage to get weekend off to a great start.

Holy moly, what a way to start the weekend. The Nevada State Fair kicks off today in Carson City’s Mills Park and so does the Annual Carson Valley Days celebration in Douglas County. No matter where you are, there is a carnival nearby. You’ll find some fun in downtown Carson tonight with karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar or at the Westside Pour House. Kick start your bike and head to Battle Born Harley; their Bike Night features live music by the Smoken Rabbits. Keep a sweater handy, the temperature is dipping a little, and will drop even further as soon as the sun goes down.

Motorcycles are on the way. The Street Vibrations Spring Rally is rumbling into town and Battle Born Harley on Research Way is the place to be. Every Thursday, house band the Smoken Rabbits, gets the place jumping, but this party won’t end until Sunday. The weather is finally cooperating, so karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar will be out on their patio – J and M Productions has thousands of songs to choose from. Jimmy Mallett at Living the Good Live will croon you into yesteryear with Rat Pack nostalgia.

Summer is in full blaze out there. Treat yourself to something cold at Dairy Queen; their Miracle Treat Day donates a dollar per Blizzard to the Miracle Children’s Hospitals. See what the talented kids of Strings in the Schools have been up to this summer at their free concert inside the Carson Mall. ‘Always Lost: A Meditation on War’ is an art exhibit from Western Nevada College that has travelled the country.

Happy Wednesday, Carson City. Enjoy America’s pastime tonight at the Aces Stadium and help raise money for the Carson City Library; just pick up your ticket voucher at Browser’s Corner Book Store. Casino Fandango is airing the 1968 classic, Planet of the Apes, today at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Kick off a weekend full of classic cars with Cruise Night at the Carson Mall with food trucks, kids activities, and more. Westside Pour House is the new home of the weekly ‘Geeks Who Drink’ Pub Quiz, so gather your smartest friends for a fun night of trivia, libations, and good food.

All summer long, Thursday nights have been known for the Silver Dollar Classic Car meet-ups with upwards of 80 vehicles showing off their chrome and fuzzy dice at various venues throughout the valley. This Thursday’s cruise night kicks off a weekend of nostalgic car fun. Head to the Plaza Events Center at 5 p.m. for the annual Cruise Night Show and Shine, Music and Spirits and hold onto your bobby sox.

Did you miss the Community Art Night last month? Never fear, Artsy Fartsy and the Charlie B Art Galleries are teaming up again for a night of art, food trucks, and more in Telegraph Square downtown. Dress as your favorite superhero for Gardnerville’s Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walk. Enjoy ice cream and a concert by the Capital City Community Band at the First United Methodist Church on Musser St. Close out the evening with karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar.

If you hear some great music downtown, then you’re probably near Café at Adele’s. Tower of Power hits the stage for the annual Concert Under the Stars to benefit the Greenhouse Project. Grab some grub for a good cause at Buffalo Wild Wings: LBL Equine Rescue is holding a fundraiser. Take an easy ride with Muscle Powered; tonight’s ride is perfect for beginners. If you’ve got kids, Frozen is tonight’s choice for the Carson Library movie night. Classic car aficionados should head to Bully’s if they want to join in this week’s Silver Dollar Cruise Night.

THURSDAY:

The great day about three-day weekends is how quickly the next weekend appears. Thursday in Carson City offers fun stuff like live music at Living the Good Life and Sassafras, karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar, and the Silver Dollar Classic Car Cruise night. Monty Python lovers should audition for ‘Spamalot’ at the Brewery Arts Center. The Trippin King Snakes make their monthly appearance at the Carson Cigar Company for June’s Birthday Thursday. The Rockabilly Riot roars into town today and it’s bring cool cars, a tattoo expo, music, contests, pin-up girls, and so much more. Check it out at Mills Park and make sure to catch the talented officers competing in this year’s Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge while you’re there. The kids in town are getting a new Teen Center at the Boys and Girls Club: the ribbon cutting is at 10 a.m. You’ll find author Mike White at the Nevada State Museum this evening. His presentation on the best backpacking trips in Nevada and California is part of the Francis Humphrey Lecture Series.
