The Nashville Social Club in Carson City is proud to present one of the foremost artists in western and blues music. Gary Allegretto is a 2019 International Western Music Association Artist of the Year, and a masterful entertainer who seamlessly crosses over Blues and Cowboy music.

As part of the ongoing Nevada Humanities Exhibition Series, a new exhibition, Colors of the West: Youth Art from the 2020 National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, opened online on June 4, 2020 at nevadahumanities.org and will be on display as a virtual gallery indefinitely.

A classic film, cowboy poetry and western music in mid-July at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park in Carson Valley. On Thursday, July 18, at 6:30 pm, train expert Jim Clark will introduce and provide commentary on the 1926 film The General.

Chautauquan Kim Harris will portray Lizzie A. Borden on Wednesday, July 10, at 6:30 p.m., and historian Mark McLaughlin will speak on “Lake Tahoe and the Comstock Era; Stories, Facts and Fun” on Saturday, July 13, at 10 a.m., at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park.

Good morning Carson City and happy Saturday! It’s going to be another grey day, with a high of 64 and a low of 44. But hey, it could be freezing, or things could be on fire, so I won’t complain! On the docket today we’ve got day two of the Rib Fest, a Virginia City train tour, museum activities, a heroes parade, and more. As we head into a jam-packed Memorial Day weekend, activities and events around Carson City on Friday will help set the mood for what promises to be a tremendous few days ahead. Festivities include the opening day of the Rockin’ Rib Fest at Carson City's Casino Fandango, the planting of American flags on the graves of our fallen veterans at Lone Mountain Cemetery, a weekly open mic night at A to Zen, laughs at the Carson Comedy Club, live music and more.

There was a certain energy in the air, an excitement swirling among the 15 students spanning the grades from kindergarten through eighth in the isolated, one-room schoolhouse in Ruby Valley.

It wasn’t just that the sun was finally shining — glistening off the wind-polished snow that stretched for miles — on this day in late March after a long, seemingly relentless winter.

There was something else. The Bookmobile was finally coming.

CARSON CITY — Rockhounds, nature-lovers and adventure-seekers have their fun cut out for them this spring in the Silver State. Rounding out the recreation: a tasty food and beverage scene and a calendar full of festivals. All you need for spring in Nevada is a map, a buddy and a knockout playlist for your road trip. People across Nevada nominated exceptional individuals and organizations for the 2019 Nevada Humanities Awards. These awards are for outstanding achievements in, and contributions to, the humanities, conferred bi-annually by Nevada Humanities.

Every other year, Nevada Humanities honors the achievements of individuals and organizations from across the Silver State that foster cultural enrichment and deepen our understanding of the of the human experience by facilitating opportunities for Nevadan’s to engage with the humanities.

The International Western Music Association (IWMA), which promotes and preserves western music in its traditional, historical and contemporary forms, has named Richard Elloyan Songwriter of the Year.

Singer and song writer Mike Beck will bring Western Americana music to Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 16.

Nevada Humanities is pleased to announce that 27 grants totaling over $104,500 were awarded to fund humanities programs across Nevada, including four in Carson City area.

Hold onto your hat, Carson City, we’re in for one heck of a weekend. It’ll be cowboy hats and pioneer bonnets in Genoa for Western Heritage Day. Keep an eye out for Mark Twain, plenty of music, and fun for all. Leis are the preferred accessory for Lei Day at the Nevada State Museum where you’ll be treated to Polynesian surprises and free admission. With three local theater groups performing this weekend, you’re sure to find a performance that’s right up your alley. Read on and be prepared to be bombarded with options.

Songwriter and cowboy Mike Beck will appear in concert on April 29th at the Silver City School House in Silver City. The concert is a benefit for the Silver City School House and arts events held there.

Mike Beck is asolo artist who is a regularly featured performer at The National Cowboy Poetry and Music Gathering in Elko. He has cowboyed on some of central Nevada's largest cattle ranches.

A free Western Heritage Celebration returns to the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, July 22, beginning at 11:00 am.

The event’s second year will include a heritage quilting presentation, a Victorian dressing presentation, songs about local history and cowboy poetry, as well as gold panning and other children’s activities.

Take advantage of the spring sunshine and seize the day. Virginia City roars with the sound of their annual Grand Prix. Beer and brats aren’t usually associated with ballet, but the Sierra Nevada Ballet makes the annual event at the Brewery Arts Center a great time for all. The Earth Spirit Faire wraps up its weekend of wellness at the Community Center. Head to Reno for a Cinco De Mayo Celebration at the Grand Sierra that features musicians, cuisine, and carnival rides.

Hold on to your hat, the weekend is here. If it’s a cowboy hat, head over to Genoa for their annual Cowboy Festival. Plenty of free things to see, hear, and experience await. The annual Spring Earth Spirit Faire lets you celebrate Mother Earth with workshops, holistic practitioners, great vendors, and a raffle. It benefits the Heart to Heart School and Advocates to End Domestic Violence so it’s always worth checking out. You’ll have to keep reading for all of your choices, the spring thaw brings out the best this valley has to offer.

SATURDAY:

It’s finally Friday. The annual Salvation Army Turkey Drive runs 6 a.m. until six this evening: drop off your donation at the Max Casino in Carson or at the C.O.D. Casino in Minden. Get to know Supervisor Karen Abowd during her monthly walkabout at the Community Center; head inside to get a peek at the new art exhibit in the Sierra Room while you’re there. The Craft Fair at Carson High School is a local favorite: over 125 vendors, music, and pictures with Santa. It starts tonight and continues tomorrow.

Popular cowboy poets Harold Roy Miller and Tony Argento will offer a “Cowboy Poetry Duet” for the Friday Night Showcase at the Gold Hill Hotel, 1540 Main St., Gold Hill, on Friday, Nov. 18.

Miller and Argento have both performed cowboy poetry throughout the region for many years, and their work covers all aspects of rural life, with more than a touch of humor.

VIRGINIA CITY — Lara Mather, Executive Director of the Historic Fourth Ward School Museum, will offer a program on the history, restoration, exhibits and archives at the museum, as part of the Gold Hill Hotel’s Friday Night Showcase at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4. The Historic Fourth Ward School Museum is a crown jewel on the Comstock.

June is Bike Month in Carson City, and the weather is being more than cooperative. Bike to work week begins Monday, so get back in the swing of things with the Muscle Powered Bike Ride this afternoon. If motorcycles are more your style, Bike Night at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar is the place to be. Don’t forget to stick around for karaoke.

The changing of the monthly guard is happening. The first of May is Sunday and Mother’s Day is just around the corner. Music, theater, sports, shopping and more will be abundant in the valley this weekend, so make sure to take a good look at this weekend’s list for all of your fun options.

The weekend has arrived, and it is packed with things to do. Pull on your cowboy boots and head out to the Cowboy Festival in Genoa. Head out to the ballfield: the WNC Wildcats softball and baseball teams are playing at home today and tomorrow. It’s the final weekend of the Proscenium Players production of Harvey; get ready for a great show. VIRGINIA CITY — Local celebrity and cowboy music performer John Tyson will bring his “American Cowboy” show back to the Gold Hill Hotel on Thursday, Feb. 18, as part of the Gold Hill Hotel’s Thursday Night Presentation Series.

Tyson, a Vietnam veteran, has worked as a law enforcement officer, range manager, working cowboy, train engineer, entertainer and journalist. He is best known regionally as a former reporter for KOLO-TV Channel 8.

But he is also well known for his cowboy songs and poetry, and stories about cowboys of the Old West.

Popular cowboy poet Tony Argento will perform “Tuned Up And Twisted Cowboy Poetry At Its Best” and “Echoes o’ Abraham Lincoln” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11 at the Gold Hill Hotel, 1540 Main St., Gold Hill.
The event is part of the Gold Hill’s Thursday Night Presentations at the historic hotel, 1540 Main St., Gold Hill.

Interested in Competitive Trail Riding? The NATRC National Convention “Through the Eyes of the Horse” is coming up Feb. 19-20, 2016 at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno.

Two days of great speakers, Cowboy Poetry and Music, Silent Auction and top notch vendors. Friday night enjoy the music and cowboy poetry of Northern Nevada’s Richard Elloyan and Steve Wade, free with speaker registration or $10 at the door. Events are open to NATRC members and the general public.
