Before the pandemic arrived I used to get to read the Declaration of Independence as Mark Twain, orchestrated to a Marine Corps flyover upon finishing with these words, "And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our Lives, our Fortunes, our sacred Honor." Va-voom!

Our flag symbolizes the divine right of life, liberty, happiness and peace for ALL people in this great country. Our Flag’s immortal story is written in blood and sweat, in heroic deeds and unremitting toil.

Election Day was June 9 in Nevada, but due to the nature of this year's mail-in election, ballots were still being received for a week following Election Day.

However, all ballots must have been received by Tuesday, June 16 to be counted, and those that arrived must have been postmarked by June 9.

While final official results will be announced by the Secretary of State's Office on June 19, here is an update:

Gov. Steve Sisolak has released a plan to fill an $812 million shortfall caused by plummeting tax revenues amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic as business closures earlier this spring designed to halt the spread of the virus brought the economy to a sputtering halt.

Due to the nature of the 2020 Nevada voting procedure, which included a large number of mail-in ballots, these results are not final until June 16th. Mail-in ballots must be postmarked by today, June 9, 2020, to be counted. The clerk's office must receive the postmarked ballots by June 16, 2020 when the results will be finalized.

UPDATE 11:40 p.m.: The Secretary of State's Office updated their election results, stating the first results should now be posted at midnight. The last update stated results were anticipated at 10 p.m.

At 7 p.m., the polls closed throughout Nevada, and as of 9 p.m. results have begun to be announced. This story will be updated as new results come in.

The Nevada Bankers Association is joining other local business organizations in pushing for a more simplified and streamlined process to help small businesses comply with the loan forgiveness requirements of the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).

MASON VALLEY — The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection says work to revitalize and restore the former Anaconda Copper Mine site continues to progress on schedule. The first phase of the project began in August 2019, and all necessary construction work at the site is on track to be complete by 2029.

Stimulus Program Information

The coronavirus relief bill passed March 27 by Congress provides payments to individuals who make less than $100,000 a year. The payment total $1,200 for each adult who makes $75,000 or less, plus $500 per child. The payment amounts decrease if you make between $75,000 and $99,000. The income is determined by your latest tax return filed with the IRS. It will use your 2019 taxes if you have filed them already, or your 2018 taxes if you haven't. Gov. Steve Sisolak on Tuesday ordered a sweeping shutdown of nonessential businesses, including casinos and retail stores, for 30 days, a move that would have been unthinkable weeks ago before the novel coronavirus wreaked its havoc around the world.

CARSON CITY — On Monday, former award-winning journalist and Reno resident Ed Cohen filed for Congress as a Democrat in Nevada’s 2nd Congressional district. Cohen currently works as Communications and Marketing Director for a Reno-based nonprofit and nonpartisan organization that provides education to the judiciary.

The American Library Association honored Carson City Library and its cohorts for 2019 advocacy efforts, helping restore federal library funding after it was proposed to be eliminated for the third time last spring.
