UNR scientists find causes of 'firenado' in deadly northern California Carr Fire

RENO — A destructive fire-generated vortex — a massive stream of rising, spinning, smoke, ash and fire — that topped out at 17,000 feet above the earth, accelerated the Carr fire that killed eight people and devastated a widespread area in the Redding, Calif., region in July 2018.

The vortex, a little-observed atmospheric phenomena, was spinning with the power of a class three tornado, which earned it the name of Firenado.

While we were out having lunch in Gardnerville we noticed this strange cloud formation above in the attached photo.

Apparently it’s called a Fallstreak hole.

UFO/Spaceship Cloud over Dayton. According to Wikipedia these are Lenticular clouds, defined as stationary clouds that form in the troposphere, typically in perpendicular alignment to the wind direction. They are often comparable in appearance to a lens or saucer.

New Year welcomes Super Moon

The second supermoon in a series of three will happen tonight, Monday, Jan. 1, 2018 with the peak occurring at 6:24 p.m. Pacific Time. The forecast calls for scattered high clouds and relatively mild conditions for this time of the year. The final supermoon in the series will happen Jan. 31, which also corresponds with a lunar eclipse for some parts of the world.

Sun and clouds combine for dry weather this Christmas holiday weekend

High clouds with periods of sunshine and gusty winds are expected this weekend around the Carson City and Lake Tahoe regions, putting a familiar capper on a likely Christmas without snow in western Nevada.

Six years ago, shots rang out and Carson City was thrust into the middle of a tragedy. Four people died in the IHOP shooting, three of them National Guard members. Today, they will be honored again during the annual Remembrance Run. If you are driving along Fairview, please give them some extra room. Wheeled Truck Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center is a ‘weather permitting’ event, so keep your eye out for rain clouds.

Weather Service: Expect partly cloudy skies around western Nevada during solar eclipse

Solar viewing glasses will be turned to the sky for Monday’s solar eclipse. While Carson City and western Nevada are not in the totality path, the eclipse will still be quite visible, with 75 to 90 percent of totality, or the percent of the sun obscured, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Carson City area weather: Chance of thunderstorms, potential for flash flooding this weekend

A low pressure system off the coast of southern California will bring air instability and moisture to western Nevada and the Eastern Sierra through the weekend and into next week creating the potential for thunderstorm activity, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Sunny days, sweeping the clouds away. On my way to where the air is sweet. I can tell you where to find some fun, down on Carson Street. Mile High Jazz Band at Comma Coffee is the hot ticket tonight. Such a beautiful day in store, they’ll probably be in the courtyard. Our rivers and reservoirs are filled to the brim: if you ever wanted to learn more about fly-fishing, this is probably a good time for it. The Carson City Fly Fishing Club meets monthly at the Carson City Airport and is a perfect choice for those who already love or are curious about the sport.

Wungnema Open House on Sunday honors Native American heritage

The Foundation for Carson City Parks & Recreation is holding an Open House at the Wungnema House in Mills Park on Sunday, Feb. 19, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. honoring Native American heritage.

Carson City Weather: Rain, high winds return to area

After periods of clouds and isolated showers this weekend, rain is expected to return to Carson City late Sunday into Monday morning, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno reports, accompanied by a high wind watch with gusts as high as 45 miles per hour (mph) and sustained winds between 15-25 mph by Monday afternoon.

Art exhibits in Carson City set for Friday receptions

Art lovers will have two receptions to attend in Carson City on Friday evening. Gil Martin, who makes his own paint from natural earth pigments that he digs up from various sources in the western United States, will feature his work in the “From the Ground Up” exhibit presented by the Capital City Arts Initiative Friday through May 24 at the Courthouse Gallery.
