Carson City supervisors to discuss new hires, CARES Act expenditures, burial and cremation fees and more

The next Carson City Board of Supervisor’s meeting will take place Thursday, Aug. 6 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, located at 851 East William Street.

On the agenda for discussion and possible action includes new city positions, a Library Board of Trustees position, CARES Act expenditures, indigent cremation and burial fee changes, road replacement and more.

Senator Square: Carson High School senior to raise support for Nevada Humane Society

Hello to everyone in Carson City. My name is Destiny Hernandez, and I am a senior at Carson High School. Just like all of the other seniors here at the school, I am working on my Senior Project, a graduation requirement, in order to benefit not only myself but also those animals in the community who need a home.

Nevada Commission for Women and the Nevada Women’s Suffrage Celebration Committee formed to help facilitate collaboration among organizations in Nevada to celebrate and commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment. As part of her Carson High School Senior Project graduation requirement, student, and committee member, Chloe Walt is working to educate Nevadans on the suffrage movement and the historic importance of the ratification of the 19th Amendment.

This time of year, the Nevada state capital is filled with traditions. One that has grown especially endearing to the Carson City community is the annual Pets of the Homeless fundraiser presented by Carpa Nevada, LLC and Downtown Coin.

John Bullis column: The rules behind non-taxable employee achievement awards

If an employee receives tangible personal property such as skis, tires, clocks, television sets, radios, clothing, etc. and the value is not more than $400, then it can be tax free if it qualifies as an employee achievement award.

That is tax free of income, social security, medicare and unemployment taxes for both the employee and the employer. The award can not be cash, gift certificates, vacations, meals, lodging, tickets to events, stocks, bonds or other securities.

Nevada JobConnect will hold two job fairs this week, Wednesday, in Reno and Thursday in Carson City. The job fairs are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.

The job fair on Wednesday will be held at the Summit Mall at 13945 S. Virginia Street, Suite 636 in Reno and the Thursday job fair will be held at the Carson City Fuji Park Exhibit Hall at 601 Old Clear Creek Road.

State Senate Majority Leader Questions High Cost Of New State Medicaid Contract

CARSON CITY – A lawmaker today questioned whether state officials did everything possible to negotiate the lowest cost for a recently approved $177 million Medicaid contract.
Sen. Steven Horsford, D-Las Vegas, asked Medicaid program Administrator Charles Duarte if the contract with HP Enterprise Services reflects a 10 percent reduction in the cost of state contracts sought by lawmakers to help address Nevada’s current fiscal crisis.
