I was out watering a few days ago and I noticed yellowjacket wasps crawling on the ground. I mentioned to my friend Will that I thought yellowjackets bite rather than sting. He said he didn’t think so, saying not only did they sting, but they could sting repeatedly. Well, he was right, but so was I.

During October, Michael Hohl Motor Company will be holding a pet food drive to fill a pickup for the national nonprofit Pets of the Homeless, based in Carson City.

Each day, Nevada Humane Society has dozens of cats and kittens arrive at the shelter. This time of year, those numbers are especially high — and right now your help is needed as the supply of cat and kitten food is running critically low.

Nevada Humane Society in Carson City will offer a new clinic beginning this week to allow for low-cost spay and neuter surgeries. The clinic is part of the new Carson City Animal Shelter operated by NHS that opened October 2016.

On any given day, the Nevada Department of Wildlife receives multiple calls from people expressing their concerns and asking questions about the wildlife they see in their communities. While the nature of those calls varies, a common focus of concern is the urban coyote.

Kitten Adoption Day is Saturday, July 22 from noon to 4 p.m. at Michael Hohl Honda in Carson City. Catmandu is partnering with Honda to help disadvantaged cats and kittens find their FURever homes.

The two biggest things that could happen to you this summer are entirely possible with one simple action. Purchase a $25 raffle ticket. Yep, that’s it. $25 will give you the chance to win a brand new car and save the life of a homeless pet all at the same time. It’s true, we swear.

The monthly Mile High Jazz Band show moves from Comma Coffee to the stage in McFadden Plaza, so it’s a free poetry and jazz show for all. Thanks to a generous grant from PetSmart Charities, free-roaming, feral cats in Carson City can now be spayed or neutered, vaccinated and ear-tipped for free as part of Nevada Humane Society’s Trap-Neuter-Return program.

Though we always expect it, we can never predict when emergency situations will happen — though it often seems to happen early in the evenings.

Nugget’s story is no different.

Summer? Winter? Flip a coin. I could’ve guessed the rain was coming, my lilacs just started to bloom. A cat was rescued from a small apartment fire in the Carson Park Condominiums at 400 Saliman Road in Carson City Saturday afternoon, Carson City Fire Department Battalion Chief Dan Shirey said.

Holy moly, it’s going to be a busy weekend: busy and gorgeous out. A bowling tournament and the Comstock Shootout Soccer tournament have the hotels and motels busting at the seams. YERINGTON — Lyon County's seat celebrated Earth Day on Wednesday with a volunteer fair at its fire station, tree planting, painting the town's animal shelter and the announcement the community has been approved for $36 million in federal funding for water and sewer improvements.
