Strings in the Schools, Carson City Symphony's after-school program, presents its 7th annual "This is Not a Christmas Concert" on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St., Carson City.

We’ve just about made it. Time to grab the last of the ingredients from the grocery store and get ready for the big day tomorrow. Wax up the skis and snowboards while you’re at it, the Tahoe resorts are opening for business. Today, you’ll have the chance to hit the slopes at Northstar and Heavenly; Kirkwood will be ready on Saturday. It's a Holiday Treat for all – a feast of seasonal and holiday entertainment in many styles! The Carson City Symphony presents the 33rd annual Holiday Treat concert on Sunday, Dec. 11, 4 p.m., at the Bob Boldrick Theater in the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street.

Consort Canzona, a select group of instrumentalists and singers that specializes in early music, will present two “Lessons and Carols” concerts this Holiday Season: Friday, Dec. 2, 7 p.m., at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church, 3680 Highway 395 (just south of Best Buy) in Carson City, and Saturday, Dec. 3, 5 p.m., at the Carson Valley United Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane in Gardnerville. Admission to both concerts is free, donations welcome.

Feeling nostalgic? The 20th Anniversary of Space Jam is playing at the Galaxy Theater in case you need a fix of the 90s. Capital City Arts Initiative proudly presents some new art in the Sierra Room of the Community Center. You’ll be able to check out ‘Glyphs and Houses’, a solo exhibition by Amelia Currier during public meetings and on Friday afternoons. The Adams Hub is a great resource for entrepreneurs and small business owners: today’s Entrepreneur Assembly is all about getting you started and on your way.

The Change Place in Carson City is no ordinary gym. In fact, it’s not a gym at all, said Don Kuhl, who co-owns the business with his wife, Sherry Newsom.

“Heeere's Johnny!” The Shining returns to the big screen today at the Galaxy Theater, so get a jump on the weekends chills and thrills with some cult classic horror. For something much more family friendly, a Halloween Party at the Library includes fun crafts and a costume contest. Author Sandie LaNae of Thin Veil Investigators is the featured presenter tonight at Washoe Lake State Park. She’ll be discussing some of her discoveries in ‘Weird, Haunted Virginia City.’ A fun night of jazz awaits at Living the Good Life with Tom Stryker’s Impromptu. As October marches along we find ourselves nearing election day. Head to the first floor of the courthouse to earn your 'I Voted' sticker now; early voting continues until Nov. 4. Another way to make your voice heard today is by attending the Arts Town Hall sponsored by the Nevada Arts Association. They are looking for the ways that arts and culture can be improved in the Carson City area, among other things. While the mornings can be chilly, a walk with Muscle Powered along the Freeway Multi-use Path will get your blood pumping.

Zephyrus Brass Quintet will perform a free concert at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson Street, Carson City, on Friday, October 28, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

The Carson City Symphony Association is accepting applications for an instrumental music scholarship for Carson City students age 5 to 17. The annual scholarship was established by a generous gift from Jennifer and John Webley in memory of Rosemary Nebesky, former board member and friend of the Carson City Symphony Association.

I’m usually a lover of sunny days, but right now I say bring on the rain. The moisture is a welcome help to our heroic firefighters in Lake Tahoe and Washoe Valley. Because of the wet weather and the recent fires, some activities have been postponed: most notably the Advocates to End Domestic Violence’s Annual Light After Dark Run. There are still plenty of things to occupy your time, but the weather may force more cancellations.

Scott Tazbir has moved into the Backseat Gallery at Comma Coffee. A reception highlighting his drawings will be tonight at 5 p.m. Celebrate National 4-H Week with an open house at the UNR Cooperative Extention Office.

For many years, Sue Jesch has given her all for string players of all ages. In 2004 she founded Carson City Symphony's Strings in the Schools program, each year providing free instruction for over a hundred students in violin, viola, cello, and bass, donating much of her time and energy.

Now she needs our help. For the past two years, Sue's friends and students have watched her fight increasing weakness, stiffness, and pain. She was recently diagnosed with Parkinson's (or a Parkinson's-like) disease.

Tuesday has arrived, and that means a new stroll with Carson City Parks and Recreation. Today's Easy Walk is the Annual Art Tour, visiting eight galleries and exhibits downtown. If you can't join them on this excursion, just grab the new art walk map at the Carson Visitor's Center to make sure you don't miss anyone. Today also marks the beginning of the Nevada Day Treasure Hunt, an annual tradition that has history buffs and Nevada aficionados combing the grounds for the lucky medallion.
