CARSON CITY — With the end of the school year drawing nigh, the Carson City School District announced Tuesday that it meets or exceeds the minimum number of minutes taught per day, and in turn, students will not be required to make up the one day lost due to a weather-related school cancellation.

After snow storms forced the cancellation of its Feb. 16 Carson City show, Celtic music favorites Tres Noctambule have reschedule and will play at the Brewery Arts Center on April 6, 2019 at 7 p.m.

Celtic mandolin master Marla Fibish, and guitarist Bruce Victor will be joining forces with Marin County's Irish fiddle virtuoso Suzuki Cady. With elegant performances of intimate songs and intricate Celtic tunes, Noctambule remains a BAC favorite since the beginning of our Celtic Music Series.

UPDATE: 7:45AM: Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak has ordered all state offices in Carson City, Washoe County and Douglas County to open at 10 a.m. Friday morning.

"Due to snow and icy conditions overnight and in the early morning hours, I'm ordering all state government offices in Carson City, Washoe County and Douglas County to open at 10 AM today," the governor Tweeted. "Please allow for plenty of time to safely commute to work this morning."

Douglas County valley schools are operating on a 90-minute delay, according to the Douglas County School District web site, and the morning early childhood program is canceled for Carson Valley schools.

Zephyr Cove Elementary School is closed today for a snow day.

All Douglas County schools are operating on a 90-minute delay Wednesday morning, according to the Douglas County School District web site. This delay applies to both valley and lake schools.

Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton got student loans to finance the education of their adult son (Andrew). In 2008 Mr. Hamilton was permanently disabled due to a back injury. In June of 2011 he asked to have the loans discharged (cancelled). In 2011 two lenders did cancel loans totaling $158,511.

Mr. and Mrs. Moore lived in Ohio and their individual income tax returns for 2013, 2014 and 2015 were selected for audit by IRS. The audit report showed the taxpayers failed to report cancellation of indebtedness income; failed to report wages; failed to report retirement income and failed to keep detailed records of the non-cash contributions.

Beginning Tuesday, March 6, the Carson City Fire Department will conduct a prescribed burn in the area of Timberline. Smoke will be visible and the fire department encourages the public to contact 911 only if an emergency exists.

The Fourth Annual Early Childhood Expo scheduled for Saturday, March 3 at the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada has been canceled because of expected inclement weather, Carson City School District Public Information Officer Dan Davis said.

The cancellation of classes and activities at Carson High School Friday does not include the long-anticipated and carefully planned annual Mr. Carson High pageant scheduled for March 2 at 6:30 p.m. inside the Carson City Community Center, Carson City School District Public Information Officer Dan Davis said.

Mindy Lessard was married to Mr. Tomko in 2013 and they filed a joint tax return. However, two items of income were not reported on the return. UPDATE 338PM: Thursday's power outage was caused by an NV Energy fuse on a power line that feeds Carson High School, according to Carson City School District Spokesman Dan Davis. Wednesday's electrical storm may or may not be blamed for the equipment failure, he said.

The failure caused a brown-out at CHS that resulted in partial power going into the electrical devices requiring 3-phase power. This brown-out condition caused HVAC pumps and motors to labor inefficiently causing electrical smells and raising safety concerns.

The fire alarms were engaged and students evacuated for safety purposes. NV Energy arrived at CHS soon thereafter. Unfortunately, workers did not notify school administration that they would be turning off the power to the building that they did at lunch time.

"Coincidentally, a fight occurred in the hallway of the school and students were running toward the fight in darkened hallways. Not knowing if the power would be out for a short or long duration and in light of the already agitated student body, we decided to release the students early. School messenger calls were made to the parents notifying them of the early release. Power was restored to the school earlier this Thursday, and class will resume as usual Friday," said Davis.

UPDATE 1:30PM: Following the cancellation some skirmishes were reported as fights. Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said there was adequate school resource officers and patrol coverage at the time school was released and none thus far resulted in arrests.

UPDATE 12:30PM: Carson High School was canceled Thursday at around 12 noon due to electrical issues and a power outage, according to Carson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes.

Earlier today a "popping" sound was heard near the boiler room that forced the school to be evacuated. Students returned to class. However, the electrical issues continued and school was shut down.

Students can walk home, drive if they have a vehicle or call their parents, said Superintendent Stokes. The district is contacting parents now regarding the matter. School buses will run at their regular 2 p.m. times.

Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies have stepped up patrolling the area at Saliman, Highway 50 East and Fifth Street due to heavy traffic flow in the area because of the school closure.

UPDATE 12:05PM: Carson High School Resource Officers report a second evacuation Thursday due to testing of the electrical system. Students had been evacuated briefly earlier this morning due to an electrical issue near the boiler room. School maintenance is investigating.

Carson City Fire Department was called Thursday morning after school resource officers at Carson High School heard a "popping" sound near the boiler room and could smell smoke. Administrators pulled the fire alarm for precautionary measures and an evacuation was made.

With the cancellation of the 19-year long tradition of fireworks over Labor Day in South Lake Tahoe due to budget constraints, the Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority and other local businesses have pulled together to present a full menu of things to do on the South Shore from a laser light show to concerts and a carnival.

The Carson Ranger District on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is pleased to announce the return of the popular Forest Ranger-led snowshoe walks. The walks start this Saturday, Jan. 21, and will be offered every Saturday through March 18.

After a brief pause in the rain yesterday, the storm has returned. I write this list with trepidation, as localized flooding is still affecting homes and businesses around town. Everything on this list is subject to cancellation. It’s back to school for the kids of Lyon County and Carson. Jacks Valley Elementary is closed, but all other Minden/Gardnerville students are headed back. The National Pony Express Association will be conducting its Annual Re-Ride of the Pony Express Trail from Sacramento, California, to St. Joseph, Missouri, June 15 - 25, 2016. It is expected to pass through Carson City at approximately 2 p.m. Thursday, June 16.

This Re-Ride is a 10-day, 24-hour a day, non-stop event by over 600 riders and horses over the 1,966 mile route of the Pony Express National Historic Trail from California through Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas to Missouri. It is the longest event held annually on a historical trail in the nation.

Santa Claus will be delivering presents tonight to girls and boys throughout the capital city, but unfortunately due to the bad weather, he won’t be guided by Carson City sheriff’s reserve officers.

The Light after Dark Walk/Run scheduled at Riverview Park in Carson City tonight has been canceled due to the dangerous conditions of the track from the bad weather. This time last year Carson City experienced a downpour that turned Mills Park into swamp land and forced the last-minute cancellation of National Night Out.

As the Carson City region continues to experience similar and strange weather this summer, the skies threatened a bit but ultimately held out for the 13th annual National Night Out with an astounding community turnout. It was as if locals had put all their energy from last year's disappointment to this year's celebration.

Late last year, Congress finally passed various tax law extensions. That did not give much time for individuals and business owners to react. By waiting until the last few days of the year, it did show Congress does not understand the importance of having tax laws that are consistent and easily understood.

A few folks have experienced having debt cancelled. The question is whether or not that cancellation of debt is taxable income.

It could be credit card debt that was reduced or cancelled. It might be a mortgage on real estate that was reduced or cancelled. Fortunately, Congress did some things right. There are several instances when the cancellation of debt is NOT taxable income. Here are a few examples.

The Interfaith Community of Carson City has canceled its annual potluck picnic and food drive scheduled for Monday on the lawn of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. The cancelation is due to unhealthy smoke.

Prescribed fires at Lake Tahoe's east shore above Glenbrook and north shore have been blowing smoke into Carson City.
Fire and fuel crews with the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit of the Forest Service began the controlled burns today. Winds in front of a storm system are pushing smoke into the area, confirmed Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi.

We expected a 24-hour race at Daytona in January. What we did not expect was a 36-hour race in February, but that’s what we got. It was almost exactly 36 hours from the scheduled start of the Daytona 500 until the checkered flag flew for Matt Kenseth. It was perhaps the most snake bit race I have ever seen, with an unprecedented cancellation for rain. A second-lap accident took several drivers out of contention, including rookie Danica Patrick and five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson.

The fireworks display scheduled for tonight at the Harley-Davidson Street Vibrations show in Carson City has been cancelled. This comes after the motorcycle gang shooting at the Nugget in Sparks on Friday night and shooting early this morning on Victorian Avenue.
