CARSON CITY – Republican governor candidate Brian Sandoval yesterday released his education plan, calling it a results oriented proposal that would end teacher tenure and the social promotion of students.

CARSON CITY – The Republican Assembly Caucus has launched a media suite to keep Nevadans engaged and informed about lawmaker activities as the general election campaign season gets under way.

CARSON CITY – Lame duck Gov. Jim Gibbons not only fell short in campaign contributions in his recent primary loss to Brian Sandoval, but donations to his legal defense fund have dried up as well.

CARSON CITY – For the first time since 1992, Nevada voters will find no question on their November ballot that qualified as the result of a citizen’s initiative petition, the secretary of state’s office has reported.
The deadline for submitting the required number of signatures to county clerks passed Tuesday with no petitions presented in any county. Three petitions to amend the state Constitution were in circulation.

CARSON CITY – Former state Sen. Bob Beers, R-Las Vegas, said he has settled a lawsuit with the Nevada State Democratic Party over a campaign mailer sent out just days before the November 2008 general election alleging he was under review by the state Ethics Commission.

CARSON CITY – A two-member panel of the state Ethics Commission has decided there is insufficient cause to move forward with a complaint that state Treasurer Kate Marshall used her office to benefit her re-election bid.

Ok, so we know who won. But did yesterday's vote tell us anything?

I wrote earlier about how the outcome of the supervisors races could give us a clue on how the public views the Nugget Project, AKA the Carson City Center Project.

Karen Abowd, the only candidate to openly support the project, did come in first in her primary with 31 percent of the vote in a six-way race.

CARSON CITY – In the fight for control of the Republican Party in the state Senate in the Tuesday primary it was an even split, with conservative candidates taking two of four contested seats and two others going to more moderate candidates backed by Senate Minority Leader Bill Raggio.

With less than two hours to go before Carson City polls close, Clerk/Recorder Alan Glover reports a busy primary day with a voter turnout, when all is said and done, that may be around 45 percent.
"It's going real well. The turnout is much better than we expected," Glover said, adding that early voting and absentee returns should represent about 30 percent of the cast ballots.
The breakdown in turnout seems to be largely Republican, with a 60-40 split, however the race for Carson City sheriff may be bringing out a lot of non-partisans and Democrats, he said.

Despite the efforts of some citizens to get the Nugget Project to be put to a vote of the people, you won't find it on the ballot when you go and vote today.

But the results of this primary election might tell us a little about the public's sentiment concerning this project.

Out of the nine candidates running for the two open seats on the Carson City Board of Supervisors, only one — Karen Abowd — has expressed full support for the Nugget Project. The rest are either skeptical or outright opposed.

CARSON CITY – GOP U.S. Senate candidate Sue Lowden said today she is “very encouraged� by the exit polling results her campaign has seen from early voting as primary election day draws near.

CARSON CITY – Campaign contribution reports for the front-running Republican and Democrat candidates for governor show they are about even in the money-raising and expenditure game.

I sent an email to all of the members of the Carson City Board of Supervisors for their reaction to the initiative petition filed on Friday to put the Nugget Project to a vote in 2012.

We now have responses from the four supervisors, and I just added Mayor Bob Crowell's comment below.

Despite a broken public education system and gloomy outlook for the state’s K-12 students, effective reform might very well be on the horizon for Nevada.
The reform that is gaining the most traction in the state is that of publicly funded empowerment schools that are able to make decisions on schedules, staffing, budgeting and instruction separately from a centralized school district.  The system also provides students with a choice as to which public schools they attend, and schools are funded based on how many students they attract.

CARSON CITY – Gov. Jim Gibbons said today the political pundits and pollsters may be in for a surprise when the votes are counted in the GOP governor’s race on primary election day June 8.

CARSON CITY – Nevada Supreme Court Justice James Hardesty said a program the state initiated a few years ago to pardon selected illegal resident inmates so they could be deported to free up space in the prison system was in his view successful.
Hardesty said the review resulted in 106 nonviolent inmates being granted conditional pardons in exchange for a waiver of any immigration hearing and agreement to be deported to their country of origin.

A Carson City judge agreed with Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller who says an out-of-state organization that ran TV ads featuring gubernatorial candidate Brian Sandoval must register as a Political Action Committee before conducting any more political activity in the state.

With early voting under way for the Nevada primaries, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Chad Christensen yesterday maintained that he will come out on top, despite polls showing him trailing well behind candidates Sue Lowden, Sharron Angle, and Danny Tarkanian..

CARSON CITY – GOP U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle said today the attacks on her campaign from opponent Sue Lowden trying to link her to the Church of Scientology are off base and a distraction from the real issues of concern to voters.

Early voting opens tomorrow at the Carson City Courthouse. And while I voted on the first day last election, I'm waiting until June 1 this time. That is when the campaign finance reports come in. It will be interesting to see who is funding which candidates. We will be posting those reports on Carson Now when we get them for everyone to see. CARSON CITY – Over the past several legislative sessions the state Senate Republican caucus has shown a willingness to work across the aisle with Democrats, with some GOP lawmakers voting more than once for tax increases as a way to balance the budget.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong and the city are being sued for $10,000 by a former deputy sheriff who is alleging defamation, invasion of privacy, false light and emotional distress. Download the PDF of the lawsuit here.

The plaintiff, Paula Andrews, was the subject of an internal investigation involving falsifying documents and grand larceny in December 2008. According to the lawsuit, the investigation concluded the allegations were unfounded. Nevertheless, the plaintiff was later "constructively discharged."

A committee designed to look at outsourcing Carson City School District's food service program has tentatively selected Aramark as a provider, district officials told board members tonight. Under terms of a possible contract, district food workers would not lose their jobs.
A contract between Aramark and the district could be presented to the school board by the end of the month.
Three proposals have been on the table, including food service companies Sodexo and Chartwells. The school district will begin a series of negotiations with Aramark to establish a contract.

CARSON CITY – Gov. Jim Gibbons is touting his successes in implementing recommendations from his SAGE Commission on ways to improve efficiencies and save money in state government, but many of the proposals remain in progress or will require action by the 2011 Legislature.

CARSON CITY – In a letter sent today to the Legislature’s Interim Finance Committee, the state Treasurer’s Office said the Millennium Scholarship will run out of money in 2011 unless action is taken to preserve the program.

Former U.S. senator, Vietnam war hero, advocate for disabled veterans and author Max Cleland will speak to Democrats in Carson City on Wednesday, officials announced Sunday.

The Carson City Democratic Central Committee invited the former Georgia senator to speak about ongoing policy issues for the November midterm election. He will address the public at 7 p.m. in the AFSCME building at the southwest corner of Robinson and Roop streets in Carson City.
