2nd annual Raise the Roof to End Poverty

The 2nd annual Raise the Roof to Ease Poverty is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 9. Beginning at sunrise, KBUL on-air personality and Catholic Charities supporter, JJ Christy will perch himself atop the Catholic Charities building located on Valley Road and East Fourth Street braving the elements until the organization raises $150,000. In addition, Catholic Charities will host an outdoor BBQ, tours of its programs and invites the community to cheer for JJ.

Local band Stonewood to debut May 5 at A to Zen

Lake Tahoe Autumn Food and Wine Festival returns Sept. 9-11

Celebrate Lake Tahoe’s most prestigious food, wine, spirit and brew festival this fall at the 31st Annual Lake Tahoe Autumn Food and Wine Festival September 9-11.

Presented by the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association and held at Northstar California Resort, the three-day festival features hands-on mixology and cooking classes, food, wine and craft beer pairings, a Farm-to-Tahoe dinner, tastings held at mid-mountain, and family-friendly events — all culminating in Sunday’s Culinary Competition and Grand Tasting.

Carson City celebrates National Boys and Girls Club Week with salute to heroes

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada will be throwing open its doors to the public next week to celebrate National Boys & Girls Club Week, with events each evening March 7 – 12, Monday through Friday, beginning at 4 p.m. each day. The Club is located at 1870 Russell Way in Carson City.

Known for its Wild West traditions and old miner Comstock legends, Virginia City has its authentic Nevada history and quirky, outlandish special events that keep people from around the world coming back for more.

This year is no different as the town’s 2016 special events calendar includes fan favorites such as the International Camel and Ostrich Races, the Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry and several parades as well as a brand new event, a western rodeo in September.

The Nevada Northern Railway Museum transforms into Chris Van Allsburg’s classic children’s book, The Polar Express, this Christmas season.

Children of all ages are welcome on a special ride from Ely, Nev. to the North Pole. Hot chocolate and cookies are served while listening to the Polar Express story and music from the Polar Express soundtrack.

Santa’s helpers are on board, and Santa Claus awaits the train’s arrival at the North Pole, where he presents children with the special gift of a silver bell.

Pancake breakfast Saturday kicks off Carson City Library summer reading program

Carson City Library’s Summer Reading Program will kick off with the Breakfast for Books at 8-10 a.m. Saturday.
“It’s important kids keep reading in the summer so they start off strong in the fall,” said Heather Butler, youth services librarian. “This bridges the gap at the end of the school year.”

Nevada Cooperative Extension: Improve your odds, prepare for wildfire

May is Nevada Wildfire Awareness month. Each year the Bureau of Land Management, Nevada Division of Forestry, U.S. Forest Service, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, other program partners and corporate sponsors, work together to educate Nevadans on living with wildfire. Much of western Nevada is a high fire hazard environment, especially in this drought year.

With a fourth year of drought and spring temperatures climbing, Carson City residents are urged to be fire safe. May is Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month and as conditions continue to dry, and the number of windy days begin to increase, the potential threat of wildfire grows.

Protecting your home starts with you. The wildfire season is here. This Saturday and Sunday, the Carson City Fire Department will hold two events designed for homeowners to prepare for the season.

There will be a Community Open House, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Date night takes a trip back in time Saturdays on the historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad “Toast of the Canyon” route. Wine and appetizers are served aboard the round trip historic steam engine excursion through the Carson River Canyon, Sept. 7 and Oct. 5.
