Opinion: Yay and Nay votes require study

The city’s website does not recap how the board voted after each meeting. To learn how I vote on an item, you must watch or attend the meeting. I try to explain and ask questions before each vote so the public can better understand the process for my decision.

Since I took office, I have pulled many Consent Agenda items that will cost tax payers money for discussion prior to any approval. I believe not asking questions and not having public discussion about spending taxpayer money is wrong.

Bullis and Company CPA: Some thoughts about IRS audits

It’s great to have that income tax return filed! Maybe you can relax and take a deep breath now. But, what if IRS has questions or selects your return for audit?

The deduction for Office in the Home for the part of your home that is regular and exclusive business use is NOT an invitation to IRS to audit your return. There is even a “safe harbor” that can be used. IRS understands how important that home office is to many taxpayers-usually the sole owner business.

Tear Down This Fence!

The plan for making downtown more pedestrian, bike, and business friendly was presented and voted on at the Board of Supervisors meeting on the evening of April 18. It was a special session that made it more for convenient for the public to attend. The Mayor chose not to hold speakers to a time limit, giving everyone a chance to speak their mind. And that they did.  The meeting began at 6:30 PM with an overview of the project from Public Works, followed by public commentary, and didn’t wrap up with the final vote until 10:30 PM.

Act Now! For a Livable Downtown

The plan for making downtown more pedestrian, bike, and business friendly will be presented and voted on at the Board of Supervisors meeting this Thursday April 18, at 6:30 PM, in the Carson City Community Center’s Sierra Room.  Your attendance at this meeting is vital to ensure that this project moves forward!

Bullis and Company CPA Column: Home office deduction is OK

Several folks have indicated they have a sole owner business and use a part of their home regularly and exclusively for business use. They have not claimed that deduction because they heard it would cause an IRS audit of their tax return.

Our experience is the deduction is fine, OK to claim. IRS has recently even issued a Revenue Procedure for a “safe harbor” Office in Home deduction. Rev. Proc. 2013-13 offers an optional method of figuring the deduction.

Letter: Prison steals work and jobs from struggling Nevada companies

This is a letter I sent out to Gov. Sandoval, and multiple other State Representatives. I would be very pleased if someone would bring this to light and show what our tax dollars are doing in this economy. There was a big story about this in Vegas with another company ... but this is also happening in our own backyard.
