By coming together in 2021 we can turn a horse chestnut into a chestnut horse, and join Dinah Washington in singing, "This bitter earth may not be so bitter after all."

The results are in. Students laughed at them because they had to dress differently, today, but they laughed at the students, too, because they were all dressed the same.

It seems that every four years we’re told that, “This is the most important election in history!” In 2020, that axiom seems more true than ever. As the president of the Nevada Republican Assembly, there are some important issues of which I’d like to make everyone aware.

The Carson High School Retro-Homecoming and Respect Week went without a hitch, and the beauty of it was administrators, teachers, and staff had nothing whatsoever to do with making the decisions as the students chose both the candidates and the winners.


I found photos last week of our landscape when we bought the house in 1988. There were trees lined up like soldiers along the borders of the property and lawn everywhere else. No flowers, no shrubs. Everything was flat. Although this was boring, it certainly was easy to maintain. Thirty-two years later, I look back at that landscape and think, why did I plant so much?

I have a hero whose name is Rosalind Creasy. This landscape designer coined the phrase “edible landscaping” in her first book, The Complete Book of Edible Landscaping first published in 1982 and updated three times since 2010. Since I first read this book, and her Gardener’s Handbook of Edible Plants, I have dreamed of foodscaping our yard.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking to several hundred Tahoe City residents on a warm summer evening in August. I was there for a celebration that has been a long time coming.

I’ve been noticing all the new seedlings coming up around the yard: Currants, Oregon grape, penstemons, sumacs, catmint, caryopteris, feverfew, hardy geranium and many more. I did not plant these; the birds did. The seeds spread in the wind or I accidentally spread seeds when deadheading.

Reno-Tahoe International is accepting donations of gift cards and cash from the public to help government employees who are not being paid during the federal government shut down. A major donor has kicked off the program with an impressive donation.

The Senior Center recently hosted ‘Carson’s Got Talent,’ so they know the caliber of performers hidden in our midst. Auditions for their annual show, Senior Follies, continue this evening and are open to all ages. CCAI’s art exhibit in the Community Development Building on E. Proctor features work from several high school artists. Join them in celebrating this young talent at a reception tonight. The day should be gorgeous; a hike with Muscle Powered is the perfect way to embrace the spring.

Much of my gardening life for most of the year is about doing: fertilizing, mowing, watering, raking, digging, transplanting and pruning. Now, with winter upon us, I have more of a chance to reflect on how the landscape actually looks as I sit in a sunny window watching the birds, the sun rise or set, the deer wandering through, or the weather blowing clouds around.

At a public workshop on June 20, 2017, the City Manager expressed the opinion that Carson City would be relinquishing control of its fate to the Reno City Council if it elects to prohibit the sale of recreational marijuana within its borders and that the cost of dealing with marijuana consumption within our jurisdiction (because of its availability in Washoe County) cannot be adequately offset without the ability to collect taxes on new retail pot sales.

Many students never make it to college because they can’t afford it. Western Nevada College is delighted to announce that it will participate in the state’s new Nevada Promise Scholarship program, so that young Nevadans can attend WNC starting with the fall 2018 semester, free of class fees.

CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Nevada Department of Transportation is celebrating 100 years with historical photos and timeline posted on the Department’s website, as well as an invitation for Nevadans to share their state transportation memories.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s February 23 comments on marijuana received major attention in Nevada. Spicer volunteered that marijuana is still illegal under federal law and there would be “greater enforcement” in states that legalized recreational marijuana.
