When selecting a book to highlight this year’s theme for National Library Week, “Libraries = Strong Communities,” it may not seem fitting to pick one about the collapse of modern society. But Amy Lauder, collection development manager for the Carson City Library, argues “Station Eleven” is the optimal choice.

Capital City Reads is Carson City Library’s annual city-wide book club sponsored by the Friends of the Carson City Library that brings people together through reading and discussion.

The Carson High School senior class of 2019 arose early, not an easy task for a high school student, to celebrate the rising of the sun on this their final year of high school. A tradition that began decades ago at CHS has seniors jumping out of bed still wearing their pajamas, grabbing their blankets, and heading off to the CHS football field to arrive by 6 a.m.

The annual Chili on the Comstock Competition takes over the tiny town of Virginia City, including a saloon crawl Saturday and the hilarious ‘Fun with the Runs’ 5K. Carson City is in the midst of the NEA’s Big Read, with True Grit by Charles Portis at the designated book. Julie Buntin’s tome, ‘Marlena: A Novel,’ is the chosen Nevada Reads book, and Nevada Humanities has brought the author here for a discussion and reading. Find Ms. Buntin at the Nevada State Library and Archives at lunchtime or hear her thoughts at the Minden Library this evening. Keep an eye to the skies if you’re interested in today’s Muscle Powered hikes; they will walk on the indoor track at the Multi-purpose Athletic Center if it’s rainy.

Santa comes in all shapes, sizes, and apparently, vehicles. Hop aboard the Santa Train at the Nevada Railroad Museum. It’s an out-of-this-world Alien Santa at the annual Zen Christmas at A to Zen. A cookie-loving Santa can be found at Adele’s during their annual toy drive for the Ron Wood Resource Center. If your ‘kids’ are the four-legged kind, then head over to PetSmart or Paws to Pur-fection Dog Grooming for your holiday photos. In addition to the Santa-mania, you’ll find a downtown Carson Beer Crawl, two plays at the Brewery Arts Center, and plenty of music.
