As this storm system moves in, it makes it difficult for list-makers, such as myself. I cannot predict which of these events will be affected or cancelled because of the snow. The show must go on for the kids of Youth Theater Carson City. ‘The Lion King, Jr.’ is in its final weekend of performances.

About the Show:
Journey is a 90-minute voyage of dance and music through the heartbeat of the world’s cultures. In this show, you will see dances ranging from Irish hard shoe, American clogging, Ukrainian Hopak, exotic Indian dances, and much more. It is a kaleidoscope of furious footwork, pulsing rhythms, live music, and authentic costumes radiating the magic from across the globe.

FRIDAY:

Wintery Sundays are almost asking for hot chocolate and ice skating. Head down to Carson Lanes for their Bowling ‘Golf’ Tournament and see how well you can maneuver 18 lanes with varying oil patterns. Classic movie lovers are in for a treat as Galaxy Theater offers two viewings of the 1952 favorite, ‘Singing in the Rain.’ Grab some friends or your special someone for ‘Bostyx’ featuring David Victor formerly of Boston. You’ll find this great concert in the Performance Hall at the Brewery Arts Center.

SUNDAY:

It's "big-band jazz times three" when the Mile High Jazz Band, Carson High Jazz Band, and Carson Middle School Jazz Band present the 14th annual combined concert, the Mile High-Carson High Jazz Extravaganza, on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m., in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street, Carson City.

The snow has finally stopped falling and now it’s time to go play in it. What’s on your weekend fun list: snowmen and skiing or a toasty fire with a good book? SATURDAY:

I wish everyone luck keeping their triskaidekaphobia at bay. The number thirteen is nothing to fear, even when it falls on a Friday. (I’m not going to lie: triskaidekaphobia is one of my favorite words and I very rarely get the chance to use it in a sentence.) Mother Nature has thrown us for a loop this week, and we deserve the chance to enjoy the break in the storm. Take the family down to the Library for their game corner, or cheer on the talented cast of ‘The Lion King, Jr.’ at the Community Center.

Oh baby, it’s cold outside. Jack Frost seems to be working overtime this weekend, bringing temperatures that will barely rise above freezing. I suggest some hot cocoa. Join Santa at Adele’s for pictures, cookies, and something warm to drink, just remember to bring an unwrapped toy to donate.

The Carson City Library has something in common with the epic spaghetti western ‘The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly’: they are both 50 years old. Celebrate the classic film and our classy library with an afternoon showing of the movie. Join Cherie Shipley at the Brewery Arts Center; the annual ‘Joyful Noise’ Community Holiday Show is full of cheer for all ages. Our high school and middle school student orchestras invite you to their free winter concert at the Community Center this evening. Living the Good Life welcomes singer/songwriter Liam Kyle Cahill back to their stage tonight.

Batten down the hatches, Carson City, it’s going to get blustery. Brave the weather for a visit with Santa at Red’s Old 395 and they’ll send you home with a free picture. Local photographer Robin Travis is featured in the Backseat Gallery of Comma Coffee; head over tonight for an artist’s reception honoring her exhibit.

The moon has looked incredible these last few nights, and a view from Washoe Lake State Park is sure to inspire. Just make sure to call for reservations if you’d like to join the guided hike along the sand dunes. For some daytime scenery, join Parks and Rec. for their easy walk at Fuji Park. Head to Comma Coffee tonight for hot drinks and cool jazz. Enjoy the vocal stylings of Jakki Ford and proprietor June Joplin, in addition to some great poetry. In just two short weeks it will be Christmas Eve. Treat the kids to some quality time with Family Day at A to Zen or at the final performance of ‘Elf Jr. – The Musical.’ Let the Carson City Symphony get you in the spirit of the season at the 33rd Annual Holiday Treat Concert in the Community Center. Bring an unwrapped toy and you’ll get in for free to the Carson Victory Rollers’ annual ‘Season’s Beatings Red and Green Scrimmage.’ Keep reading for some great ways to spend the day.

SUNDAY:

Brace yourself, Carson City. We could be in for some wet and windy weather this weekend. The more adventurous of you will be participating in the Be Bold, Run in the Cold ‘Run with Rudolph’ 5/10K near Western Nevada College. If you’d rather be indoors, the Carson Mall is hosting a Holiday Craft Fair, and at noon will celebrate the grand opening of Ogres-Holm Pottery. Celebrate a Country Christmas with Mary Kaye and the Kaye Sisters in Genoa or get your Celtic fix at the Brewery Art Center with a performance by County Clarke. Read on for local fun for young and the young-at-heart.

What do you need to get in the holiday spirit? Carson City probably has it covered. Watch ‘A Christmas Wish’ with Jimmy Durante at the monthly meeting of the Carson City Classic Cinema Club. Let the talented kids of ‘Strings in the Schools’ entertain you with their annual ‘This is Not a Christmas Concert’ Concert at the Community Center. If you need some bowl-full-of-jelly belly laughs, then the Super Santa Extravaganza, featuring some of the area’s funniest stand-up comics, is for you. You’ll find that in the Brewery Arts Center Black Box Theater. For a good dose of Christmas lights, head to the Johnson Lane area. Off Stephanie Lane, on Chaparral Court, is a spectacular display known as Nevada Christmas.

TUESDAY:

Don’t think that Sundays are just for rest, there is plenty to coax you out of your pajamas today. Take a trip with Santa at the Nevada Railroad Museum. Search for treasures and do your Christmas shopping at Fuji Park today, one of the multiple craft shows in town. Enjoy a free concert at the Community Center courtesy of the Capital City Community Band. Dayton is celebrating a small town Christmas tonight; bust out your best ugly sweater and join the fun. I hope you got your fill of naps last weekend because this weekend is chock full of fun to be had for all. You can Wine Walk until you Holiday Crawl downtown. Take your pick of craft shows in town. Kids won’t want to miss the Santa Train at the State Railroad Museum or one of the two performances of ‘The Peanutcracker’ at the Community Center. Whether you’d like to spend the days indoors or out, there is something for all ages in the Carson City area this weekend.

Sparking a child’s interest in ballet is no easy task, but it’s a challenge that Rosine Bena has met with uncomparable success over the last 20 years.

This week's It's Your City with Cortney Bloomer features Ronni Hannaman, executive director of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce to discuss the Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights this Friday, Dec. 2 and several other events planned for the holidays.

Under the direction of Richard Doede, the Capital City Community Band will perform its free annual holiday and patriotic concert with a “Salute to Bob Hope,” on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 3:00 p.m., inside the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William Street.

The turkeys have been cooked, the dishes done, and the largest shopping weekend of the year is off and running. Show some love locally during Shop Small Business Saturday. Great little shops, restaurants, and services offer something unique for those on your gift list. Gift Certificates are never a bad way to go either: who wouldn’t want a massage, a night on the town, or maybe some music lessons? Perennial holiday favorite “The Nutcracker” by the Pinkerton Ballet Theatre returns to Carson City Thanksgiving weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 25-27. Featuring Erica Chipp of the Smuin Ballet in San Francisco as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Oliver Adams of Diablo Ballet in Concord, CA as Cavalier, this 28th year of performances is not to be missed.

It's a Holiday Treat for all – a feast of seasonal and holiday entertainment in many styles! The Carson City Symphony presents the 33rd annual Holiday Treat concert on Sunday, Dec. 11, 4 p.m., at the Bob Boldrick Theater in the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street.

Start the day making something beautiful. The Muscle Powered Trash Mob descends upon our new downtown for some clean-up and coffee. Kids will enjoy the Tales and Wags program at the Library where they get to read to therapy dogs and acquire a new book in the process. It’s a Carson/Douglas Army/Navy rivalry as the JROTC programs hit the field at Carson High for a game of flag football. Keep reading and you’re sure to find something that sounds fun.

SATURDAY:

It’s finally Friday. The annual Salvation Army Turkey Drive runs 6 a.m. until six this evening: drop off your donation at the Max Casino in Carson or at the C.O.D. Casino in Minden. Get to know Supervisor Karen Abowd during her monthly walkabout at the Community Center; head inside to get a peek at the new art exhibit in the Sierra Room while you’re there. The Craft Fair at Carson High School is a local favorite: over 125 vendors, music, and pictures with Santa. It starts tonight and continues tomorrow.

From flea markets, holiday craft fairs to movies and art exhibits, there's plenty of things to do and see around Carson City on this Sunday. Western Nevada Musical Theater take you ‘under the sea’ with a matinee performance of Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid.’ Read on for what what else is happening.

SUNDAY:

I’m not trying to rush you, but the holidays season approaches. As such, the holiday craft fairs, bazaars, and bake sales have arrived. You may as well start looking at that gift list to see who would enjoy something one-of-a-kind and locally crafted. If not for gift giving, these fairs are an excellent way to find fun ways to decorate your home. Other than that, the weekend is kind of quiet, but you'll want take a look at the list and see what catches your fancy.

SATURDAY:

A heartfelt ‘thank you’ to everyone who has served or is serving in our Armed Forces. Further thank yous go to their loved ones for the sacrifices they make. This Veterans’ Day several local and national businesses have some special offers for you: free food, drinks, and even pet adoptions. You’ll find them all listed here. It’s also a Friday, so Carson City has some fun packed into our little valley. Enjoy live music at Westside Pour House or Living the Good Life. It’s a DJ Dance Party at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar.

There is always something to look forward to after any Election: no more Election commercials. Grab your cowboy boots and head to Carson Lanes for some line dancing with DJ Cowboy Bobby. The Shipley’s head up the jazz jam at Living the Good Life and you never know who will sit in with them. Trivia is on the menu at Westside Pour House: the weekly Geeks Who Drink pub quiz is tonight. The Senators versus Tigers rivalry continues as the faculty of the two high schools compete in a friendly game of basketball.

There is an excellent chance that your devices have already fallen back one hour, but not everything is digitally connected. Daylight savings time is done for the year, and hopefully you’ve enjoyed your extra hour of sleep.
