Funded by a $1.2 million naming gift from the William N. Pennington Foundation of Reno and donations from the Carson City community, the club broke ground on the Teen Center in October 2015.

Then it came to her — in a dream — the store that would help people connect with one another through meaningful gifts.

“I really just woke up with this idea of having a very heartfelt store,” she said.

Marijuana clouds issue of workplace drug use

All employers must protect their workers, their customers and themselves when it comes to illicit drug use in the workplace. Doing so will become especially crucial if Nevadans, through November’s ballot, vote to legalize the recreational sale and regulation of marijuana and related products.

This was the primary message of a “Marijuana in the Workplace” lecture delivered Friday at the Carson City Chamber of Commerce’s Soup’s On! luncheon, in collaboration with Partnership Carson City and the city’s district attorney’s office.

A presentation Friday organized by Partnership Carson City and the district attorney’s office will help employers and the public understand new laws governing drug use and what effect they will have on the workplace.

Melissa Davies elected to Northern Nevada Human Resources Association board

RENO, Nev. (May 24, 2016) — Melissa Davies, a Benefits Solutions Consultant for Reno-based Clark & Associates, has been elected to the board of directors of the Northern Nevada Human Resources Association.

Davies will serve as vice president of membership for NNHRA. She has more than 10 years experience working with human resources professionals and employers to develop comprehensive employee-benefits solutions.

Davies also has served on the NNHRA Workforce Readiness Committee.

The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges Announces Joey Orduna Hastings as New CEO

The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ) has announced Joey Orduna Hastings as the new chief executive officer after a nationwide search. She will start on July 15, 2016.

“I am thrilled to be part of an organization I so deeply believe in. I look forward to working with the dynamic NCJFCJ staff and membership to continue to achieve monumental strides on behalf of children and families nationwide,” said Orduna Hastings.

Sorting out the rumors about The Greenhouse Project

Recently, an article was posted to Carson Now by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension promoting a spring plant sale fundraiser for The Greenhouse Project, located behind Carson High School.

Although the article itself seemed very non-controversial, the comments posted to it were anything but.

REMSA Names Dean Dow New President and CEO

REMSA, the Regional Emergency Medical Services Authority, has announced that Dean Dow has been named president and CEO of the organization. He replaces Jim Gubbels, who has retired from the organization.

“We thank Jim for his many years of service to REMSA and the community, and wish him well as he leaves the organization,” said Jim Begbie, chair of the REMSA Board of Directors. “REMSA is in excellent hands with Dean’s vast experience and leadership abilities.”

The Board of Directors named Dow as the interim president and CEO for REMSA in January.

UNR names Kerri Garcia Director of Communications at the University

Kerri Garcia, an award-winning public relations and communications professional, has been named Director of Communications at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Garcia will lead the University’s efforts in internal and external communications, media relations and will serve as the institution’s primary spokesperson.

Garcia, a 1992 graduate of the University who previously was Community Relations and Communications Manager with Microsoft in Reno, begins work on April 1.

Raptors are visible in Carson City, too

The annual Eagles and Agriculture event kicks off this week in the Carson Valley, a wildlife viewing exhibition that attracts hundreds of visitors to the area to see birds of prey feeding and nesting below the eastern slopes of the Carson Range.

Director returns to Brewery Arts Center in Carson City where dance career began

As a child Gina Hill, then Gina Lopez, danced her way through Carson City. “it was all I ever knew, really,” she said. She was a regular in a floor show in a Mexican restaurant in the former Silver City Mall — where Lowe’s now stands. Dec. 4, 2015 was an even crazier day than normal at Dutch Bros. on Carson Street. The coffee house pledged to donate $1 for each beverage sold that day to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada. Total beverages sold that day resulted in a $1,300 check for the Clubs.

Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada travel in style, thanks to foundation grant

The E. L. Wiegand Foundation presented a $70,000 grant to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada to replace the organization’s aging vans following a visit to Carson City from Foundation President Kristen Avansino.

“Last fall I decided to visit the Club unannounced,” Avansino said. “It was my first visit to the new facility since I had not been able to visit the Club’s Teen Center grand opening. I toured the building with Program Director Matt Sampson and was truly impressed by his enthusiasm and assessments. The building was well maintained and, obviously, well used.”
