Golden years ahead for retiring Teddy, Carson City's drug-sniffing Golden Retriever

Teddy, the warm-hearted, floppy-eared 8-year-old drug sniffing Golden Retriever and valiant member of the Carson City Sheriff's Office K9 squad for years, officially retires today.

Known for his gentle demeanor and love of tennis balls, Teddy has been adored by law officers, sheriff's office staffers, children and even the most unlikely folks — those who have had their vehicles searched — ever since he came on board as an 18-month old rookie sniffer.

Carson City Parks and Recreation steps it up for month of July

Carson City is joining the National Parks and Recreation Association in celebrating July as “Parks and Recreation Month.”

With warm temperatures and long daylight hours, summer is a great time to explore your city’s parks and trails, try a new recreation activity, or relax and enjoy a show. The Carson City Parks and Recreation Department has developed a calendar of events and is offering many options for free.

Putting Main Street on a Road Diet

On March 14th I attended a workshop presented by the Carson City Public Works Department. The presentation outlined a proposal to create a pedestrian-friendly environment on Carson Street through the downtown area of Carson City between Fifth Street and Ann Street. This Road Diet, as they are commonly called, would include using striping to reduce travel lanes from four to two, and add on-street parallel parking.

Freezing temperatures are keeping the roads icy in town, and there is bicycle-stopping deep snow in the nearby mountains. Thankfully there is another way to enjoy our local trails if you’re willing to let go of the handlebars and grab some poles.

Movie Review: 'New Year's Eve' enjoyable despite lack of plot

Sometimes watching a dreck movie and enjoying it can be embarrassing. Such is the case with "New Year's Eve," a multifaceted comedy of sorts playing at the Fandango Galaxy cinema in Carson City. The cast is all-star, from Hilary Swank to Robert De Niro. And while the film is pure twaddle, director Gary Marshall keeps all the balls in the air. And he should be able to; he made the same movie last year on a Valentine's Day theme.

Area bike rides scheduled

Muscle Powered is once again leading a series of road bike rides along some of the most scenic routes in the area. The rides will start out easy and gradually pick up speed as the season progres...
