CARSON CITY — Native American artist Melissa Melero-Moose finds inspiration for her mixed media creations from the landscape and culture of the Northern Paiute of the Great Basin.

“Willows, tules, cattails, and pine nuts are all very important staples to the Paiute people, being sources of food, shelter, and implements made with artistic intention,” she said. “I consider these works to be a perspective of my tribe and culture through the eyes of a Native woman, mother and artist.”

These are the amaryllis that my mom has been growing for years. She started with just the red lion amaryllis but recently she got the green amaryllis. Amazingly somehow this bulb that had always grown and bloomed as a red lion is now blooming half and half. We were pleasantly surprised to find such a beauty blossoming in our window.

Summit Estates Senior Living and Memory Care, a Mission Senior Living community, is expanding its memory care neighborhood with a 3,200 square-foot addition that includes accommodations for eight additional residents. JoAnne Skelly: Hemp is a viable crop for Nevada

Recently a reader asked me about growing hemp. According to Penn State Extension, hemp was often found in early settlements and used as a fiber source. It was widely grown in Pennsylvania and other states in the 1700s and 1800s. Not only grown for fiber, its oil was used “in paints, ink, varnishes, and lamp oil.” Conestoga wagon covers and clothing were made from hemp.

Join us on this 3-mile round-trip snowshoe trek around Spooner Lake that will take us through pine and aspen forests as we circle around the lake. Large flocks of Chickadees are often seen. Estimated time of activity is 5 hours.

Meet at Hwy 50 Park-and-Ride just west of Hwy 50/US395 interchange. We will carpool to Spooner Lake. Parking inside the park at Spooner Lake requires a $10.00 per vehicle entrance fee (exact cash amount required), or annual or senior park pass. By carpooling, the costs are reduced.

Carson City arrests: Woman jailed for allegedly switching tags at Walmart checkout line

A 45-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Wednesday, 3:19 p.m. at Walmart in the 3200 block of Market Street for suspicion of possession of a dangerous drug without a prescription, a gross misdemeanor and petit larceny, a sheriff's deputy said.
