STATELINE, Nev. — The Tahoe Regional Transportation Agency’s Governing Board approved a $50,000 settlement Wednesday with the California Department of Transportation and Stewart Engineering regarding permit violations that occurred on California Highway 89 near Emerald Bay in 2018.

There's a host of activities Friday and, looking ahead, a bevy of fun Saturday including a Mother's Day craft fair at the Carson City Community Center, a Star Wars themed bicycle safety day, a wine, cheese and dessert ride aboard the V&T, an early opening of the downtown farmer's market, the May Downtown Carson City Wine Walk, a memorial walk, presentations, comedy, live music and more. Carson City's Western Nevada College is joining the rest of the world in celebrating environmental protection of the Earth on Monday, April 22.

However, WNC will be taking its celebration further by holding activities for the remainder of that week.

CARSON CITY — Native American artist Melissa Melero-Moose finds inspiration for her mixed media creations from the landscape and culture of the Northern Paiute of the Great Basin.

“Willows, tules, cattails, and pine nuts are all very important staples to the Paiute people, being sources of food, shelter, and implements made with artistic intention,” she said. “I consider these works to be a perspective of my tribe and culture through the eyes of a Native woman, mother and artist.”

These are the amaryllis that my mom has been growing for years. She started with just the red lion amaryllis but recently she got the green amaryllis. Amazingly somehow this bulb that had always grown and bloomed as a red lion is now blooming half and half. We were pleasantly surprised to find such a beauty blossoming in our window.

The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition, "The Lay of the Land," by artist Fred Howland in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition runs now through June 30, 2019. CCAI will host a reception for the artist on Friday, March 29, 5-7pm in the Sierra Room, and the artist will give a brief talk about his photography at 5:30 p.m.

Carson City’s newest restaurant, Squeeze In, held its official grand opening today with a ribbon cutting complete with a champagne toast, and Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak stopped in for lunch to welcome the new breakfast and lunch eatery to town.

Summit Estates Senior Living and Memory Care, a Mission Senior Living community, is expanding its memory care neighborhood with a 3,200 square-foot addition that includes accommodations for eight additional residents. The $900,000 construction project began on Feb. 28 and is expected to take about six months to complete.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has stepped up its efforts to educate communities about the threats posed by invasive plants, animals, and microorganisms in Nevada during National Invasive Species Awareness Week, now through March 3, 2019.

The opportunity to attend Western Nevada College while in high school is a chance for students to expedite their post-secondary education and save some money in the process.

Recently a reader asked me about growing hemp. According to Penn State Extension, hemp was often found in early settlements and used as a fiber source. It was widely grown in Pennsylvania and other states in the 1700s and 1800s. Not only grown for fiber, its oil was used “in paints, ink, varnishes, and lamp oil.” Conestoga wagon covers and clothing were made from hemp.

This weekend is shaping up to resemble a false Spring, with unseasonably warm temperatures forecast by Sunday. Saturday should see sunny skies and a high temperature near 50 degrees.

Enjoy the winter beauty of Spooner Lake; a part of Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park. Join us on this 3-mile round-trip snowshoe trek around Spooner Lake that will take us through pine and aspen forests as we circle around the lake. Large flocks of Chickadees are often seen. Estimated time of activity is 5 hours.

Meet at Hwy 50 Park-and-Ride just west of Hwy 50/US395 interchange. We will carpool to Spooner Lake. Parking inside the park at Spooner Lake requires a $10.00 per vehicle entrance fee (exact cash amount required), or annual or senior park pass. By carpooling, the costs are reduced.

A 45-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Wednesday, 3:19 p.m. at Walmart in the 3200 block of Market Street for suspicion of possession of a dangerous drug without a prescription, a gross misdemeanor and petit larceny, a sheriff's deputy said.

Coming into its fourth year in 2019 with an expanded off-road series of community-oriented, family-friendly mountain bike events, Epic Rides will hold its community discount night in Carson City on Wednesday, Jan. 2.

Great Basin Beekeepers of Nevada, a group of about one hundred local beekeepers, gathered Saturday, Dec. 8 at the Bee Magic Building located in Mound House. Through the efforts of this dynamic organization, Carson City was recently designated as Nevada’s first Bee City USA. It is the 76th Bee City USA.

This Saturday, Dec. 15, marks the annual Cookies with Santa celebration in Carson City at Cafe at Adele’s, offering Christmas cheer to all who attend and providing gifts for children in need. The joy-filled event takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with cookies, cocoa and cider served, and Santa on hand to hear last-minute gift wishes.
