CARSON CITY, Nev. – Roper’s Heating and Air Conditioning is helping Carson City seniors beat the heat this year with a donation of 20 brand new box fans through the KOLO 8 TV Fan Drive.

It’s time for a new week, but unfortunately, the air conditions are just more of the same. The summer’s wildfire season just seems to be getting worse. As the smoky air settles in the valley, you’ll need to be much more cautious about your outdoor activity. Let Chili’s take care of dinner tonight, it’s too hot to cook anyway, and you’ll be helping the Northern Nevada Dream Center raise funds to assist those less fortunate. Kids can beat the heat at the Carson City Library with the Happy Notes program, just make sure you register first: space is limited.

With the end of the heat wave nowhere in sight, people are beginning to get a little stir crazy stuck inside lying in front of the air-conditioning all day. Luckily, Carson City and the surrounding areas offer many options to keep cool while we wait for high temperatures to come down some.

A hot and muggy summer continues; at least the rain helps clear the smoke out of the air. Mondays don’t see a lot of variation from week to week, so they are relatively predictable. You’ll always find some toe-tapping old-timey music at A to Zen during lunch. For a swinging-good time, lessons and open dance with the High Sierra Swing Club will get you going. MONDAY, July 23: Things to do in Carson City

Nearly 100 Carson City seniors will beat the heat this summer courtesy of the KOLO 8 TV Fan Drive and employees of Harrah’s Harveys Lake Tahoe.

Time for a new week, and it is going to be a hot one. Beat the heat by staying indoors and discovering the many art galleries throughout town. Capital City Arts Initiative has just installed a new exhibit in the Community Development downtown featuring work from UNR Students. Kids will enjoy a special craft activity at the Mormon Station State Park in Genoa; bring a picnic lunch, it’s the perfect park for an afternoon meal. Grab your dancing shoes, and leave the stress of the day at home.

Last week was a little nutty with a holiday smack-dab in the middle. Now it’s back to the grind. Get the kids out of the house for some fun at the Carson City Library. Today you’ll find ‘Beat the Heat with Happy Notes’ for the younger ones, but there are activities for every age. Check out the Library’s calendar HERE for upcoming events and registration.

Some days were just made for the beach. But if you can’t make the trip up to Tahoe, you can always beat the heat at Carson Lanes. With one dollar games all day, it’s an inexpensive way to stay cool. Every afternoon this week teens can head down to the Carson City Library for a healthy dose of cinema classics: it’s 80s movie marathon week. Learn what's popping up in your garden at the Shoe Tree Brewery. Experts will be around to help you discern what could cause you trouble during tonight's 'Bring Your Own Noxious Weed' event. All ages karaoke at the Fox Brewpub is a fun way to finish a Monday night.

It’s a planes, trains, and automobiles kind of weekend. Add in bands, bikes and bar-be-ques and we’ve got most of this weekend’s list covered. The Carson City Airport is celebrating 90 years at this year’s open house and fly-in. One of the summer’s best events with balloon rides, cool old planes, and much more: you won’t want to miss it. Beat the heat at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada; all admission fees have been waived today thanks to Carson City Toyota. Summer concerts at the Brewery Arts Center begin tonight with the Original Wailers.

Arts for Children of Nevada will sponsor "Beat The Heat" a free event at the Carson Library, 900 Roop Street, Carson City on July 9 and July 30 from 10:15-11:15 a.m. Children will have the opportunity to explore percussion using a variety of percussion instruments and enjoy musical fun with Maureen Conlin, children's music specialist.

Hello fellow anglers, I have been away for a couple weeks fishing in Oregon and northern California. Oh did we get into some nice fish, which I will give you the full story at the end of this report.

Firehouse Subs invites its patrons to help their local first responders beat the heat during its sixth annual H2O for Heroes bottled water collection drive this Saturday, August 5 at its Carson City sandwich shop.

Hundreds of families and thousands of children flooded the green belt at Mills Park Tuesday night to celebrate Carson City’s commitment to community and public safety at the 15th annual National Night Out.

Get ready to kiss July goodbye. August begins tomorrow and brings with it classic cars, the Virginia City Rodeo, and some scorching hot temperatures. Beat the heat with an ice cream cone from Baskin Robbins – today they’re offering a scoop for just $1.50. It’s almost like Christmas Day for some of us locals: the long awaited Taste of Downtown has finally arrived. Food, drink, live music, rubbing elbows with friends and neighbors, and a new wine-tasting add-on make this one of the best parties of the year. The morning brings an unparalleled opportunity: you’ve got one chance to walk, run, or bike right down the middle of the freeway before the new bypass is open to vehicle traffic alone. Grab your favorite four-legged friend and head to Adele’s: Dining for Dog Town is a delicious way to help out this amazing rescue organization.

The summer sun offers so many wonderful options: an early morning bike ride, a trip to Virginia City on the historic V and T railroad, or maybe a picnic and some live music in a park. All these and more are available today. Beat the heat with a trip to the movie theater – The Sandlot will take you back in time. The Chili Cook-off and Craft Fair continues at Glen Eagles. As the summer continues, the kids can get restless. Beat the heat indoors with bowling specials at Gold Dust West and Carson Lanes. BMX racing is fun for all ages, and you can check it out for yourself at the weekly practice night at the Livermore Sports Complex on Edmonds. Grab your smartest friends for DJ Trivia at the Westside Pour House, just get there early if you want to order dinner, too. Hosts John and Cherie Shipley invite you to the jazz jam at Living the Good Life; you never know who’ll join them on stage.

WEDNESDAY:

Celebrated as one of the best July 4th fireworks shows in the nation attracting an estimated 100,000 people, “Lights on the Lake” pyrotechnic display at south shore Lake Tahoe is synchronized to music from patriotic favorites to new chart-topping rock and pop hits.

I can understand if your plans for the weekend include sitting half-naked in front of a swamp cooler with an icy beverage. It has been quite roasty these last few days. Let me, however, attempt to lure you out with this weekend’s event list; there is plenty of fun to be found around the valley. Some of your options even include air conditioning and icy beverages.

SATURDAY:

Celebrate the dog days of summer on Sunday August 7th at the Carson City Senior Center with CASI Bingo. CASI is an all volunteer non-profit dedicated to raising money to build and equip the new animal shelter in Carson City.

Doors open at 11:30 AM and the first game starts at 12:30 PM. Buy in is $10 and extra packs are $5. Special games are $1 each. We also have a 50/50 raffle and door prizes too. No need to worry about lunch as we offer hot dogs at our snack bar and sometimes the wonderful volunteers will bring something yummy to eat.

Happy Tuesday, Carson City. The Carson Library is offering a craft project this afternoon, and 'What's Up in your Community' this evening, so it's not a bad place to park yourself for the day and beat the heat. Each year, Carson Tahoe Health director of resource management, Kayleen Fogleman, along with the CTH holiday and special events committee, invites area children to the CTH Kids Christmas Party. This year, Fogleman is bringing Christmas in the form of summer fun toys and sunblock to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada in June.

The local Empres Agencies are collecting new fans for our local senior citizens to beat out this heat. We have four collection drop offs that the community can donate their fans to:

Today, being hungry can be helpful. A benefit for fallen Deputy Carl Howell takes place today at Betsy’s Café inside Slot World with all café proceeds going to his family. This afternoon you can beat the heat and support the Western Nevada College Foundation at Yogurt Beach. If you're hungry for something a little different, try the Improv Workshop at the Brewery Arts Center. You'll be thinking outside the box in no time.

THURSDAY:

Hot August Nights and warm August days have arrived. Beat the heat inside one of Carson City’s many art exhibits. The Nevada Artists Association has just begun their Photography Show. Head over to the Brewery Arts Center to see it. If you haven’t been to the Courthouse lately, Capital City Arts Initiative has done an incredible job of showcasing some of the unseen craftsmanship that our local manufacturers create on a regular basis. You’ll find Industrial Arts on the second floor. The arts meet engineering at the Carson City Library. Students from Harvard and MIT will be on-hand to teach kids about various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) principles as part of the Spokes America Learning Festival.

I apologize, Carson City. You have some decisions to make. There is quite a bit going on whether you want something family friendly, adults only, indoors, outdoors, or a combination of it all. The weekly Farmers Market at Third and Curry St. is always a good way to start the weekend. Yummy food, a bounce house for the kids, and beautiful flowers are hard to argue with.
