Forest Service: Responsible recreation, safe practices and fire awareness urged this July 4 weekend

The July 4 holiday weekend at Lake Tahoe will look and feel different this year with basin firework shows canceled and social distancing safety practices required on beaches, campgrounds and along hiking trails. Even with the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Forest Service says it is hopeful the holiday period will be a great opportunity for people to get outside to celebrate Independence Day and all the wonders of Lake Tahoe.
No Sled Left Behind: New digital billboard combats Tahoe trash

On a recent holiday weekend, hundreds of visitors snapped selfies with a two-legged bear while sledding at Lake Tahoe. The “Take Care” bear mingled with families reminding them to throw away their broken sleds, rather than leaving them littered on the snow.

Take Care is a group of organizations that loves Lake Tahoe and strives to make it easier for people to find fun and interesting ways to learn more about Tahoe.

July 5, 2017 - 8:30am After Tahoe's July Fourth festivities, our beaches are thrashed with trash, which can hurt wildlife and lake clarity. Each year, hundreds of Tahoe residents and visitors turn out for our largest cleanup of the year to remove litter from our beaches. Help Keep Tahoe Blue by joining a beach cleanup site!
Cleanup sites include:
• Commons Beach (Tahoe City)
• Kings Beach
• Kiva Beach
• Nevada Beach
• Regan Beach
We will provide cleanup materials, refreshments and raffle prizes. Please bring your reusable water bottle, friends and cleanup gloves if you have them!

Volunteers remove 2,260 pounds of trash from Lake Tahoe beaches

More than 120 volunteers for the League to Save Lake Tahoe removed 2,260 pounds of trash from six of Tahoe’s most popular beaches on July 5, the day after tens of thousands of people flocked to the lake to enjoy the July 4th festivities.
The debris represented almost 10 cubic yards, or a dump truck full, of trash. It included over 3,000 cigarette butts, 1,200 cans, 800 glass and plastic bottles, and 320 plastic bags. Other cleanup projects also included a 17th annual one by K&K Services.
