After Tahoe’s celebrated July 4th festivities, our beaches can become covered with trash, endangering wildlife and the Lake’s clarity.

Help us keep the Tahoe that we love clean by participating in Tahoe's Trash Pickup Challenge, September 18 - 30! You can join us at our in-person events, clean up remotely, or do both. We are getting a later start this year due to the Caldor Fire. We're so grateful the Tahoe Basin is currently safe.

Despite COVID-19 keeping many from Tahoe beaches this season, somehow it didn’t seem to stop the trash from accumulating, but it also didn’t stop Keep Tahoe Blue volunteers from holding their annual beach cleanup.

According to the League to Save Lake Tahoe’s Communications Manager Chris Joseph, the beach clean up kept things smaller this year to make sure social distancing practices were upheld for the safety of volunteers.

Heading into Monday, Labor Day 2019, we're looking at continued sunny skies, with daytime highs in the low 90s. There's no better place than Virginia City for a parade, and the Comstock continues to honor those who use elbow grease to keep the gears of our great American way grinding. Thank you. Other activities include a Tahoe beach cleanup, art showings, swing dancing and an interfaith picnic at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Carson City, where folks of all religious stripes come together in fellowship and kindness. More than 300 volunteers stepped up to clean up Lake Tahoe beaches the day after the July 4 celebration, collecting more than 1,875 pounds of litter that would have otherwise harmed the lake's fragile ecosystem.

Heading into the Independence Day holiday weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region to keep the next three days jam-packed with excitement.

The Fourth of July will be colored with parades, barbecues, carnivals, concerts and plenty of fireworks around Carson City, Carson Valley, Lake Tahoe and Virginia City.

Don’t let finding something fun for Labor Day be laborious, just keep reading. Virginia City hosts a noontime parade to celebrate. You’ll want to stick around as the Comstock Civil War Reenactors wage a “Battle for ‘C’ Street.” Join your neighbors at the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church for the annual Interfaith Potluck Picnic and food drive for Friends in Service Helping (FISH).

Time for some Sunday holiday adventure. The Carson Nugget has something special tonight, a Van Halen Tribute Band plays two concerts in their upstairs ballroom. For a lazy afternoon in the shade, you’ll find live music on the porch of the Genoa Bar. The Tahoe Orchestra brings their annual 9/11 Memorial Concert to St. Gall’s Church in Gardnerville. Celebrate this unofficial end-of-summer with a trip to the lake, a backyard bar-be-que, the parade in Virginia City, or one of the many fun events going on around town. MONDAY: Labor Day

The great thing about Labor Day weekend is that it just keeps going. The Best in the West Rib Cook-off offers up family fun, live music, and plenty of bar-be-qued delights all the way through Monday. For those with younger kids, consider a day at Mills Park. This is the last weekend for summertime train rides through the cottonwoods. Join Muscle Powered at Silver Saddle Ranch by the Carson River for a bike or hike this morning. Bring water and a camera, you never know what wildlife will make an appearance.

SUNDAY:

Summer is holding on for dear life, and sending a miniature heat wave our way for this long weekend. For those of you not in Black Rock City, the Carson City region offers plenty of recreation and entertainment. Downtown will be hopping with the Farmers Market, monthly Wine Walk, and this season’s last outdoor concert at the Brewery Arts Center – and that’s just Saturday! Ribs and cantaloupes are on the menu today if you want to head out to Sparks or Fallon, respectively. Stay local and let the Elks Club serve you up some pancakes at their monthly breakfast. Genoa offers up a fun afternoon with friends: Sweet Sippin Sunday begins at 1 p.m. The Summer Concert Series at the Nugget offers up a tribute to Tom Petty and Bob Seger with Double Trouble. There are multiple ways to say farewell to summer this weekend. The Best in the West Rib Cook-off is a local favorite, as is the Fallon Cantaloupe Festival. Happy Labor Day, Carson City! There will be two parades to enjoy today. Head up to Virginia City for their annual Labor Parade, followed by the Battle of C Street as part of the Great Civil War Days. The other parade is comprised of the thousands of people leaving Burning Man; watch out for their dust! Join Keep Tahoe Blue for their annual beach clean-up at Nevada Beach this morning, then head over to Heavenly Village for a car show and huge winter sports equipment sale.

From Carson City to Silver City, Fallon, Virginia City, Sparks and Lake Tahoe, Sunday is filled with activities as we round the corner into the three-day weekend. There's a 5K Remembrance Run in Carson City, a rib cook-off in Sparks, a farm-to-fork festival culinary festival and fireworks at South Lake Tahoe, the Cantaloupe Festival in Fallon, the Comstock Community Rummage Sale in Silver City and the Great Civil War Days Camp at Virginia City.

• IHOP 5K Remembrance Run and Walk: free, informal, untimed five-kilometer run/walk is set to start in the parking lot at the Carson City IHOP: 3883 S. Carson St. at 7am and finish at the Nevada Guard's Office of the Adjutant General Complex: 2460 Fairview Dr. (7am-10am; Reflective running/walking gear is recommended and participants should follow the marked course; Civilian participants should arrange ride back to start line)
